PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

January 2013-presentDepartment Head, Hawaiian & Pacific Collections

Taken as a whole, the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections are generally considered to be among the world’s largest and most complete collections of their kind. The Hawaiian & Pacific Collections department consists of five full-time librarians, one full-time Administrative, Professional, Technical (APT) employee and two full-time civil service employees, along with a variable staff of fifteen to twenty part-time student workers. The Hawaiian & Pacific Collections are closed stacks collections, and maintain their own circulation counter and reference desk, in essence operating as a library within the larger UH-Mānoa library. While maintaining the job duties of Librarian III, Senior Pacific Specialist as outlined below, as Department Head for the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections I am responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective operation of the department as a whole. Among other tasks, this work involves

INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES

Adjunct faculty, University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa Library and Information Sciences Program:

As a member of the LIS program adjunct faculty, I regularly teach the following courses.

LIS 693 Resources in Hawaiian and Pacific LibrarianshipFall 2014three-unit, graduate-level seminar was designed as a collaborative effort by the five librarians in the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections department, and is being offered for the first time in Fall 2014. It is essentially meant to combine two distinct courses—LIS687 (Hawaiian Studies Information Resources) and LIS688 (Pacific Islands Information Resources)—into one introductory course, alternating between a practical guide to using Hawaiʻi and Pacific Islands library resources and an exploration of issues related to academic librarianship in a special collections setting. In addition to contributing roughly 30 percent to the course design, in fall 2014 I team-taught the course with my colleague in the Pacific Collection, and was over the course of the semester responsible for approximately 35 percent of the instruction and grading.

LIS 688 Pacific Islands Information ResourcesSummer 2007, Summer 2009 & Summer 2012 This three-unit, graduate-level seminar is offered every other year through the LIS program, and is team-taught by Pacific Collection librarians. It covers all aspects of Pacific librarianship, in both print and electronic formats. In addition, the course touches on major Pacific subject areas, such as indigenous literature, Pacific history, art and film. In summer 2012 I assumed the lead instructor role for this course, and provided roughly 50 percent of the overall instruction. In summer 2012 the course was offered as a Hawaiʻi Interactive Video Service (HITS) course for the first time, which necessitated a revision of the syllabus, for which I was 75 percent responsible.

LIS 687 Hawaiian Studies Information Resources Spring 2008This three-unit, graduate-level seminar is offered every other year through the LIS program, and is a survey course on library materials related to all aspects of Hawaiian Studies. Topics include historical research, genealogical research, land issues, Hawaiian

language and indigenous Hawaiian literature. In the Spring of 2008 I team-taught the course with the Hawaiian Collection Curator.

Affiliated faculty, Center for Pacific Islands Studies (CPIS), University of Hawai‘i:

As affiliated faculty with the Center for Pacific Islands Studies, each semester I provide information literacy instruction to multiple sections of Pacific Studies 108 and 202 (on average 90 students per semester), as well as for various graduate seminars in Pacific Studies, on an as-requested basis. I also provide one-on-one research consultations with CPIS students and faculty, also on an as-requested basis. I am currently collaborating with CPIS instructional faculty to create a more cohesive, four-year program of information literacy instruction, to be tied to the Center’s recently established undergraduate degree in Pacific Studies.

Additional teaching includes classroom instruction on Hawaiian resources for graduate seminars at the University’s Hawai‘inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, as well as classroom instruction on Hawaiian and Pacific resources for a variety of graduate and undergraduate programs across the UH-Mānoa campus. One-on-one consultations are also provided to any library patron—including students, faculty, members of the local community and an international body of visiting researchers—who has a Pacific research interest.

ACQUISITIONS TRAVEL

In addition to my day-to-day collection development and management duties, I also share responsibility for acquisitions travel. Conducted annually, these two- to three-week trips are essential to maintaining the depth and currency of our library holdings, as well as maintaining close connections with our network of Pacific-based colleagues. Since 2006, this work has taken me to the Republic of Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and American Samoa. I am one of two librarians in the UH system with on-the-ground collection development experience in all three cultural regions of the Pacific (Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia), and one of perhaps a half-dozen librarians worldwide with such experience.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

My Master’s degree in English Literature, completed in 2009, focused on indigenous literature of the Pacific, which is a major subject area for modern Pacific scholarship (and thus a major aspect of my work as a Pacific specialist librarian).
