BIOGRAPHY

Karen Tsugawa is a freelance designer and artist living and working in Roseville, California.

Karen’s knack for aesthetics and technology emerged at a young age. It was not uncommon to find five-year-old Karen installing software on her parents’ computer. It was equally likely that she could be found critiquing her picture books and adding her own unique graphic sensibility with markers, crayons and scissors.

In high school Karen taught herself how to use the Adobe Creative Suite programs and improved her innate graphic design sensibility. She was able to distinguish herself from her peers by her unparalleled work ethic and her clean, concise designs. Over the years, Karen’s signature look has evolved into a bold geometric style emphasizing a tricolor palette of black, white and red.

Karen enjoys working with small businesses, creating their branding and designing their print collateral. She has worked with a variety of business owners to create simple yet striking logos.

My life as an artist changed when I learned Photoshop. I was a huge fan of digital illustrations and was anxious to get my hands on a program where I could attempt to create the work I had seen on the internet. My love for Photoshop led me to its Adobe design program sibling Illustrator, which soon became the foundation of my graphic-based artwork. That transition was unknowingly my first leap into the graphic design world. I was enraptured by the clean precision of logos and vector illustrations. Art had always been a passion of mine throughout my teenage years, but after three years of designing in Illustrator I realized that graphic design had evolved from a fun hobby to something much more intimate—my sense of purpose. My artwork is driven towards showing a concept through shapes and contrasting colors. Rather than having many details, I keep my designs simple and create complexity with my extreme contrast color palette and shapes. Geometry has also been a main component in my art, where I take a basic shape and combine it with others, subtracting and adding different elements to form a more complex piece. These shapes and colors come together to form a clean, crisp design that stands out to the eye of the viewer.
