2 Karijini Visitor Guide
With a stunning array of gigantic gorges and shimmering pools, Karijini National Park, located in the Shire of Ashburton, is an absolute must see. It’s a natural wonder of world-class proportions. Even more, with sheer canyons and commanding look-outs located high above meandering waterways, the breathtaking Millstream Chichester National Park is simply awe-inspiring too.
Amazingly, this extraordinary pairing of national park experiences is just the start to an ever-expanding Pilbara-gateway adventure. That’s right, you’re invited to turn those ancient rocks into the world’s most spectacular stepping stones. From the rugged-red ranges and water-lily blanketed wetlands, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime outback journey to the cool-blue Indian Ocean.
Along the way, explore the thriving townsites of Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Robe River and Pannawonica. With a multitude of hidden gems across the entire shire to be discovered, every stop is the start to your own
outback story. Look around, do some shopping and join the locals at home-grown events. There’s an array of historic homesteads and rustic, architectural remnants to visit too. As you explore, we encourage you to tread lightly and listen very closely to the echoes of a bygone era.
Meanwhile, back on the road, a travelogue of unique flora and fauna offers a perennial reminder that you’re moving through a land like no other. Reaching the coastal playground of Onslow and the Mackerel Islands, you’ll discover some of WA’s best kept holiday secrets. One of the few places where the sun rises and sets over the ocean, Onslow is an absolute paradise for fishing, diving and snorkelling. It’s also a top spot to witness the rare, natural phenomenon of the Staircase to the Moon.
One visit and it’s abundantly clear why the Shire of Ashburton is fast becoming an Instagram hot spot.
A visual feast played out on an epic scale, there’s a mind-boggling choice of world-renowned locations, each one ready to out-match the other in sheer beauty and geological grandeur.
WELCOME.

Karijini Visitor Guide 9
When travelling in the Pilbara always check the local weather report before setting off.
From April to October, the entire region offers the ideal weather to spend your holidays, with winter daytime temperatures averaging around 25°C to 30°C.
However, in the summer – or the Wet Season as we call it – daytime temperatures regularly reach 38°C and can even exceed 45°C.
Therefore, caution is always recommended if you’re travelling from November to March. It’s not just the heat: heavy tropical rains can cause flooding and local road closures.
When is the best time to travel?
10 Karijini Visitor Guide
The living culture and lore of the original inhabitants of the Pilbara region is testament to their unique and ongoing connection to this country. The Aboriginal people have inhabited the land for tens of thousands of years.
For an insight into the world’s oldest continuous living culture, you’re welcome to travel the Warlu Way. A magical glimpse into the local indigenous people’s relationship to the land, it acknowledges the ongoing responsibility Indigenous people have to their country.
Sharing your respect for Aboriginal culture, this fascinating journey will introduce you to the Dreaming. An age-old philosophical belief system, the Dreaming is a word used to explain how life came to be. Passed down through generations, the Dreaming explains the origin of the universe and the workings of nature and humanity. It tells of creation stories like the Warlu serpent emerging from the sea and forming the magnificent gorges and waterways throughout the outback. To learn more, turn to page 35.

Karijini Visitor Guide 11
Although it hosts some of the most spectacular sights you’ll ever see, amazingly, the scenery is so accessible.
At Karijini, you can simply pull into a car park, walk a short distance and peer into a 100m canyon to see waterfalls and emerald-coloured rock pools.
With the help of the maps in this visitor’s guide – and the signs on location – simply choose a route to reflect your fitness and the time you have available. There are excellent walking trails to suit everyone from the beginner to the adventurous.
If your mobility is restricted, there’s a choice of accessible lookouts with extraordinary views.
Or if you’re up for it, be ready to explore deep into the subterranean gorges, wading through water and beneath cascading waterfalls. With so many amazing places to swim in the sparkling rock pools, it’s an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime.
The most popular time to visit is between May and September.

of incredible sights.
AN AMAZING RANGE
WEANO GORGEDiscover Oxer Lookout and Handrail Pool.
To see the sheer enormity and grandeur of the gorges in one sweeping view, Oxer Lookout is a great start. Located in the Weano Gorge day-use area, it offers unsurpassed views over a soaring junction of gorges. For the fit and adventurous, try a challenging climb over boulders through narrow passages to Handrail Pool.
JOFFRE FALLSEspecially impressive after the rains.
From the lookout, take in the full beauty of the stunning Joffre Gorge and stand in awe at its scale.
The spectacular curved waterfall creates the shape of a natural amphitheatre.
For some, it’s a life affirming experience to witness this sight: water cascades down the cliff face over natural steps to a dark, enticing
pool. As the gorge narrows, the rushing white waters tumble over sensuously, smooth rock.
DALES GORGEHome to Fortescue Falls, Circular Pool
and Fern Pool. From Dales Gorge, Fortescue Falls is glorious to behold and is the park’s only permanent waterfall. Enjoy a swim in the refreshing waters and lay on a rock warming in the sun.
Fern Pool, just 300m away, is one of the most picturesque settings in the park. Or, if so inclined, enjoy the three-hour return walk to the breathtaking Circular Pool.
KALAMINA GORGEAn easily accessible slice of paradise.
It’s a short walk – but it’s down a steep track – to the base of the gorge. There you will discover a small permanent pool, complete with waterfall and draping ferns.
Follow the trail downstream, past rock pools and beautiful rock walls, into the main gorge. With its delightful trail and picnicking area, Kalamina Gorge is a great introduction to the gorge system.
Access to the car park is preferable in a 4WD vehicle.
HANCOCK GORGEBest appreciated with a local guide.
The exhilarating descent into Hancock Gorge has been described as a ‘journey to the centre of the earth’. After climbing down a ladder, you wander further into the gorge which then narrows into a huge chamber with small rock pools and marbled walls.
Warning: Extreme caution must be taken when entering Hancock Gorge via the ladder.

formations creating a kaleidoscope of unique colours, this is the gorge that’s become so popular for natural history photographers. It’s also a very popular swimming spot for families due to its ease of access. No camping is permitted.
KNOX GORGEFor a light show like no other.
A natural geological phenomenon, millions and millions of years in the making, Knox Gorge is a deeply fascinating chasm. Some say, to look down into this gorge is to peer into one’s soul.
Try visiting the Lookout late in the afternoon, or early in the morning, when the slanting sun rays enhance this spectacular panorama.
MOUNT BRUCEThe local Aboriginal people call it Punurrunha.
The second highest mountain in Western Australia, it offers one of the state’s most stunning panoramic
views. The 1,235m peak overlooks the Marandoo Mine Site, providing a unique glimpse into the WA resource industry.
The vigorous climb – approximately a 6 hour return trip – is recommended to be undertaken early morning. Ensure you carry plenty of water.

Karijini National Park
Karijini Visitor Centre
Located in the heart of Ashburton, Karijini National Park, this unmissable Visitor Centre has an extensive interpretive display offering intriguing insights into aboriginal culture and heritage. It also brilliantly highlights the vibrant pastoral and mining histories of the area, plus the surrounding geology, fauna and flora. Ask the friendly staff for park information and detailed maps regarding the activities that can be undertaken.
A standout, architectural statement, the innovative building design also proudly tells a unique cultural story. Cleverly designed to look like a goanna moving through country, the building’s layout is highly symbolic to the local Banyjima traditional owners.
The tail of the goanna is a reflection of Aboriginal cultural history: it demonstrates how age-old traditions remain vitally connected to the now. The middle of the structure – forever central and stable – represents Aboriginal lore. And the goanna’s head leads to a proud and dynamic future.
Inside the building, a range of fascinating stories and useful information is shared through a series of interactive displays. By watching and listening to intriguing yarns about Aboriginal culture, people and places – both past and present – visitors can discover just how integral the local Aboriginal people are to the Karijini story. Through these displays, and the building itself, we can glimpse the world through eyes of the Banyima
traditional owners. With an open mind and fresh insight, it’s possible to view the park’s natural wonders in a uniquely different perspective.
There’s also a leisurely informative walking trail (at the rear), a retail section to browse, plus cold drinks and ice-creams.
For further information phone +61 8 9189 8121.Open from 9am to 4pm daily.Closed from early December to early February.
With accommodation often booked-out well in advance throughout the Pilbara, we strongly recommend you secure your bookings as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Keep in mind that most caravan and camping sites usually provide more availability.

Here’s just a taste of what you can find. For more information, you’re welcome call into the Visitor Centre. Or look online for to learn more. The attractions on the following pages are but a glimpse of what you can discover.
WORLD CLASS BEAUTY. LOCAL EXPERIENCES.
Karijini is just part of the adventure.
There’s so much to see and do in the Shire of Ashburton. As you travel the highways and byways, an array of unique attractions awaits your discovery. Depending on the length of your stopover, and the time of year, there’s some truly awesome things to see and do.
AUTHENTIC STATION STAYSThe Australian outback is famous for its cattle stations; some are so enormous, they’re larger than some European countries! As you travel through the rugged, rolling outback, a Station Stay on a working cattle station can be the perfect interlude before hitting the parks or the coast. Many visitors stay for a night or two. It’s an opportunity to slow down and connect with the Pilbara and its people. Enjoy awe-inspiring landscapes, campfire tucker and good old-fashioned hospitality.
PANORAMIC STAR GAZING In the Pilbara, the Milky Way can be seen with incredible clarity. With the naked eye, it’s possible to identify star clusters that are located 16,000 light-years away. You can even view Mars without a telescope and many Indigenous constellations, like the Dark Emu, are crystal clear in the Pilbara skies. Far inland without light pollution from city lights, the night sky is a natural planetarium. Quite simply, epic.

Experiences
COASTAL PLAYGROUNDWith so many fish on the bite, there’s one spot you can tell everyone about: The Mackerel Islands. Whatever your style, all the action is right there. Even more, renowned for its own fishing hotspots, the town of Onslow also bursts with family-friendly holiday activities, from prawning and crabbing, to sailboarding and snorkelling. And there’s Turtle Tours and Whale Watching too. For an ideal holiday far from the crowds, these coastal hideaways are close to your heart.
TIMELESS GEOLOGYYou’re traveling amongst some of the oldest and most ancient rock formations in the entire world. That’s right, parts of the Pilbara landscape are officially dated over 2.5 billion years old. What’s more, Stromatolites – the first forms of life on this planet – can also be seen nearby at Shark Bay. Both biological and geological, these amazing formations are often called living fossils. Instrumental in providing oxygen to the early atmosphere of Earth, we wouldn’t be here without them. Interestingly, NASA uses these 3.5 billion-year old structures to help search for life on Mars.
CALL OF THE WILDTraveling the Pilbara, it’s abundantly clear that you’re in a wildlife hotspot. So, keep your camera handy and don’t miss a thing. The area is teeming with unique plants and animals. In fact, much of the local flora and fauna – especially the plant life, reptiles and invertebrates – is found nowhere else on earth.
Some iconic species include the Pilbara Olive Python, the Millstream Fan-Palm Tree, and the Pilbara Leaf-nosed Bat. Of course, with such variety on display at any given moment, the Pilbara is an extremely popular place for nature lovers and photographers. Within Karijini, there’s even dedicated photography tours. On a station stay, your host will take you directly to the flora and fauna hotspots.

Karijini Visitor Guide 19
FLORAL WONDERSThe Pilbara’s flora is yours to explore. The local plants have evolved unique adaptations to survive in such an arid climate – many species are one of a kind, found only in the Pilbara. As you travel from the rugged ranges to the coastal reefs, the flora on display is as diverse as the landscape.
You will see different colours all year round: Vibrant outback shades contrast with red
earth and colourful splashes leap from golden grass. Watercourses are lined with River Red Gums, Coolibah, Silver Cadjeput and Desert Bloodwood Trees. And gorges with permanent water supplies support the Common Rock Fig and Rock Kurrajong.
From July to September wildflowers of all colours, sizes and shapes, like the unmistakable Sturt’s Desert
Pea, the purple and fluffy Mulla Mulla, the tall majestic Ashburton Pea or any number of the 65 species of Acacia (wattle) can be seen throughout the region. For local Aboriginal people, the plants and flowers of the Pilbara provide much more than just aesthetics – they’re still using the flora for food, medicine and ceremonial use today!

ON THE ROAD TO KARIJINI
Permanent water from the gorges nourishes the Common Rock Fig, Lemongrass and Silver Cadjeput. Acacia, including the prolific Mulga and Desert Poplar, Robinson’s Desert Rose, slender Petalostylis and Ashburton Pea can be seen as the kilometres melt past.
Keep an eye out for the fluffy yellow flowers of the Acacia. Also see the Spotted Emu Bush, Desert Poplar, Yellow Flame Grevillea, Twinleaf Mallee and Coolibah along the trail.
Millstream-Chichester National Park:
At River crossings keep an eye out for river Red Gums, Coolibahs and the yellow flowers of the Candlestick Cassia. The Desert Walnut is common south of Port Hedland down to the Turner River. The rocky peaks of Chichester Range rise sharply from the coastal plain creating tranquil gorges and hidden rock pools. The rare Millstream Fan Palm (livistona alfredii) is found on the walk trail to Chinderwarriner Pool. Bright golden sticky Cassia, Rock Kurrajong, Lace Flower, Sturt’s Desert Pea, Robinson’s Desert Rose, Morning Glory, tall Mulla Mulla, Spinifex, Snappy Gum and the Common Rock Fig also feature in the landscape.
Onslow:
Look for Yellow Flame Grevillea and Robinson’s Desert Rose. The fragrant Apple Bush and the unique Green Birdflower also adorn country closer to the coast.
Paraburdoo:
Rainfall often causes the Sturt’s Desert Pea and Bush Tomato to flower near the roadside. Also poison Morning Glory, Burra (eremophila frazeri) and Northern Bluebell are common here.
Tom Price:
The ancient Hamersley Ranges are covered in Spinifex Grass, Desert Bloodwood and Snappy Gum. Closer inspection reveals Northern Bluebell, Mulla Mulla, Native Tomato and Limestone Cassia.

ROBE RIVER RODEOBuckle up for an action-packed weekend of fun! Yes, take an exhilarating swig of rugged outback culture and raucous country spirit. Witness the local cowboys and cowgirls taking on
some of best rodeo riders from across Australia. Experience firsthand as a remote outback community comes together for an authentic annual hoe-down. It’s your chance to be part of a
wild-west crew. Join in as the bull riders, cow ropers, rodeo clowns, locals and blow-ins let their hair down to the roster of live bands. It’s a blast of thirsty throated adrenalin.
DISC GOLF – PLAY THE FAIR WAY This fast-growing, popular game is based on Golf. However, the players throw flying-discs (yes, just like frisbees) along challenging, outback fairways instead.
To reach the hole (or bucket in this case), each player must navigate their disc around natural obstacles. It’s super-fun and the entire nine-holes of action is totally free!
There are two Disc Golf courses in the Shire of Ashburton: one in Paraburdoo and one in Tom Price. The Discs you need can be purchased at the Tom Price Visitors Centre and at the Paraburdoo Library.
A strategically-designed, nine-hole course was constructed in both towns. No matter your age or ability, you’ll find Disc Golf is very easy to learn,
yet infinitely challenging and highly-addictive. For all levels of fitness, the courses cater for beginners and advanced players. You’ll even find many local people are quite skilled and will gladly offer a quick demo. Just ask.

MOUNT NAMELESS With panoramic views – over the township, across the adjacent iron ore mine and to the surrounding ranges beyond – the ironically named Mount Nameless is a veritable magnet for visitors. The local Aboriginal name is Jarndunmunha, which means the ‘place of rock wallabies’. Reaching an impressive 1128m above sea level, it’s the highest accessible peak by vehicle in WA. In a vehicle, the climb takes about 30 minutes, but it’s a 4WD adventure only. It’s quite a challenging walk too. From the base of the actual mountain, allow for at least a three hour return hike.
AN ORE-INSPIRING STORYArriving in the early 1960’s to appraise the ore deposits, a man named Thomas Moore Price was instrumental in convincing the mining companies to mine this isolated area. In late 1962, at the age of 71, Thomas Price (by then, he was called Tom by his Aussie mates), returned to the USA. Sadly, just hours after hearing of the extremely rich ore deposits located near the Pilbara town he recently left behind, Tom suffered a fatal heart attack. The town of Tom Price is named in his honour.

Covering an area of nearly 200,000 hectares around the mighty Fortescue River, this is the heartland of the Yindjibarndi people.
A lush oasis of deep gorges and
palm-fringed pools, it appears in
stark contrast to the surrounding
rocky, spinifex-covered hills.
Attracted by the bounty of
water, early European settlers
established an active pastoral
station here, which remained in operation for over 100 years. Long before the arrival of settlers, and proudly to this day, the area is of great cultural significance to the Aboriginal custodians. The gorges and pools are home of the mythological serpent, the Warlu.
A lush tropical oasis of unimaginable beauty.

Millstream Chichester National Park
Millstream-Chichester National Park offers some of the best nature-based camping opportunities in the Pilbara region. Even more, there’s a range of walking and bike trails, with some of the more popular attractions outlined on the following pages.
Cultural Connection
The Yindjibarndi people are the traditional landowners of WA’s Millstream-Chichester National Park. They maintain a deep connection with this country. In recent years, the Juluwarlu Aboriginal Corporation has produced a vital resource called “Ngurra Wardurala Buluyagayi: Exploring Yindjibarndi Country”. In consultation with the elders, they compiled accurate site descriptions, including songs and stories that are linked to the land, in English and Yindjibarndi. An essential guide if you’re seeking a deeper understanding of Yindjibarndi country, the book also includes a fold-out (A3) map of Millstream-Chichester National Park.

DEEP REACH POOLA large, permanent body of water, fed by an aquifer beneath the park, this beautiful pool has remained an oasis of calm for millennia. Now offering BBQs and shaded picnic tables close to the water’s edge, this picturesque, world-class spot is a place to enjoy the scenery and relax.
The enticing water looks so peaceful however the water is very deep. The banks are precarious too and there’s often submerged trees and rocks. So, please don’t dive into the water (if you choose to swim, use the entry steps for access) and supervise children closely.
Deep Reach is also known as Nhanggangunha. If you plan on swimming, the Yinjibarndi people are most concerned for your safety as this is where the Warlu serpent quietly resides. Therefore, due to this profound cultural significance, the Aboriginal custodians politely ask you to treat the site with care and respect. By keeping noise to a minimum, you help the Warlu to quietly co-exist.
In respect to the ancient beliefs of the traditional Aboriginal custodians, motorised watercraft of any kind are not permitted in the pool. Please also note that swimming at Jirndawurrunha Pool (near the Homestead), or in the surrounding streams, is not permitted.
PYTHON POOLOne of the Ashburton’s most popular locations. Enjoy a leisurely picnic and refreshing swim in the freshwater plunge pool at the base of the escarpment. The day use area has a BBQ available and there’s a choice of walking trails to explore further into the Park. Please note: the pool can be dangerous after rain due to currents and debris, and from algal blooms in the dry season.
MOUNT HERBERTLocated within the Park, the picturesque peak of Mount Herbert offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Park your car at the base of the mountain and take the challenging 45 minute return climb. See page 25 for information on the four mountain challenge.
MILLSTREAM HOMESTEAD VISITOR CENTREWith irrigated lawns and shady areas for picnicking or a BBQ, it’s a popular place to enjoy respite from the rigors of the dusty road. Built in the 1920s, the heritage homestead is now an unmissable hub for exploring the Millstream-Chichester National Park. A range of interpretative displays within the homestead provide valuable information about the park’s attractions as well as the life of the Yinjibardni people and the early colonial settlers.
Once a thriving abode on a large pastoral station, the Homestead offers a glimpse into early outback life. The fully restored shearer’s kitchen is a must see. There’s also a brilliant showcase of the surrounding ecology, from the natural wetlands to the scrubby woodlands, from the arid plains to the soaring range.
The Visitor Centre is open daily between 8am and 4pm. It is not always staffed, but rangers visit often. There’s an intercom to the Ranger’s Office. In an emergency, visit the Ranger’s house.

The Warlu Way
To this day, the sacred Aboriginal songlines and dreaming stories stand strong.
They remain as highly-meaningful, timeless echoes across the rugged landscape, an enduring and fascinating part of this country’s heart and soul. To acknowledge and share your respect for local Aboriginal belief and culture, travelling the Warlu Way is highly recommended.
On a self-drive journey through the Pilbara and on to the Kimberley, the Warlu Way reveals the mysteries of the Warlu ‘sea serpent’ and other dreaming stories. As you move through the ancient, hauntingly beautiful landscapes – including Karijini and Millstream Chichester national parks – you’re encouraged to stop, look, listen and learn.
Travel back in time to the Dreaming when this powerful, mystical serpent emerged from within the sea and
travelled through the pulsing red heart of the outback, forming magnificent waterways as he moved. With inspiration and guidance from the interpretive signage along the drive – created in close collaboration with the traditional owners – you’ll learn other creation stories and experience the landscape from a totally new perspective.
Both entertaining and educational, the significant connection between the natural wonders of this country and the local Aboriginal culture is gently revealed. Beginning on the shores of the world’s largest fringing reef, Ningaloo, the Warlu Way leads you nearly 2,500 kilometres from sapphire seas to discover the lush oases, soaring gorges, rugged ranges and ancient Aboriginal art of North West Australia.
A magical insight into Indigenous relationships, responsibilities and respect, this once-in-a-lifetime journey shines a light on the Indigenous people’s unbreakable relationship and binding bonds to the land. It acknowledges the ongoing connection that local Aboriginal groups have to this country.
As a visitor, please travel thoughtfully and respect the wishes of your hosts. Please note that parts of Australia’s North West are very remote and often require high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles and plenty of planning.

Visitors are always welcome at Pannawonica; it’s a fantastic place to stop for supplies and refuel.
This bustling town was purpose-built to specifically support the mining industry and remains a ‘closed town’. So, only employees at the local mine site (and their families of course) can reside there or stay for an extended time. Nearly 1000 people live here and all work in the mines nearby.
In global terms, it’s a unique civic set-up and well worth a look around. The town’s many facilities include a post office, library, supermarket, milk bar, tavern and hotel, sportsmen’s club, bank agencies and a service station.
The public swimming pool is always a popular spot during summer. Likewise, the open-air cinema: when they’re playing a movie, pop in: it’s free of charge.
Just a short drive from Pannawonica, Robe River offers well-shaded swimming holes plus picnic and camping areas. It’s a great spot to relax away the day’s drive. These unique pools are a haven for native flora and fauna and a refuge for many species during the dry season. A lazy day by the river costs nothing.
LOCAL FACT:
Pannawonica’s name was taken from the nearby Pannawonica Hill, which drew its name from the Aboriginal word meaning
‘the hill that came from the sea’.

Experience a mining community.
Pannawonica
For a small town like Pannawonica, the Robe River Rodeo is the highlight of the year. In fact, the population more than doubles for this heart-pumping weekend.
It’s an authentic outback blockbuster with all the spontaneity, action and mayhem that only a hooves-and-horns event can muster. A thoroughly entertaining show, quickly gaining Australia-wide notoriety, it’s now considered an unmissable showcase on the North West calendar.
With big-hats, dusty boots and a fearless attitude, rodeo riders from far and wide arrive to take on the
tough and talented locals. A fair dinkum, good-old-fashioned bone-shaking competition where the winners are grinners, there’s nothing in the North West that compares with this event.
Championed by the local community, the surrounding pastoral properties, cattle stations, mining companies and support businesses across WA, it attracts a bustling
crowd. Among many exciting events, the highly entertaining Bull Ride is not to be missed. And each night, as the sun sets, the rodeo-riders dust themselves off as the live bands hit the stage for everyone to enjoy.
The rodeo grounds are located on the outskirts of Pannawonica with free camping for visitors. For more information please visit: www.roberiverrodeo.com

A short drive to the ever-popular Karijini National Park – with convenient access to the towering escarpments and stunning gorges nearby – Paraburdoo is a very popular place to visit.
Established in 1972, the town was initially built to support the mining operators nearby.
Today, about 2000 people call Paraburdoo their home, plus the many workers from the Rio Tinto mine site who often visit for provisions and supplies.
With a fully-stocked supermarket, chemist, petrol station, post office, hospital and much more, it’s is a great place to re-stock, re-fuel and yarn with a friendly, knowledgeable local.
Renowned for its beautiful scenery and ecological diversity, the town’s short history offers some fascinatingly tall stories, like UFO sightings, the mystery of the bones and the royal visits!
If you take the time to explore, there’s some hidden gems to discover. Like the innovative Resilience Sculpture. Just out of town – on the road to Tom Price – this creative landmark is of great significance to the locals.
Just a ‘cooeee’ from Karijini.
LOCAL FACT:
The name Paraburdoo comes from the Aboriginal name “Pirupardu” meaning ‘meat and feathers’. It refers
the abundance of white cockatoos in the area.

Paraburdoo
With two internationally-renowned feature films made in his name, Red Dog may well be Paraburdoo’s most famous son (or pup)!
This amazing hound, surely an enigma wrapped in a legend, was born in Paraburdoo around 1971. That’s a fact agreed on by the old timers.
When his owner died, Red Dog started a lifelong odyssey. For many years, this wayfaring, wandering pooch – a friendly kelpie-cross – lived the traveler’s life, hitching rides throughout WA’s north. Increasingly known and recognised as time passed, he was a universally-loved figure amongst the locals, mine workers and truckies in the outback.
Known simply as Red Dog, this independently-minded kelpie (even redder in colour from the Pilbara dust) was known for stopping vehicles by walking in their path until the driver stopped. He then hopped in and travelled to wherever the driver was going. Often a passenger on the regional bus service too, when a new driver wouldn’t let him ride, all other passengers disembarked in protest.
Red Dog quickly became legendary in the broader North West community, with some taking him on trips as far afield as Perth…even, as some say, to Japan and back by an ocean-going ore carrier.
Red Dog passed away in 1979 and is buried in an unmarked grave somewhere between Roebourne and Cossack. To learn more about the Pilbara’s posthumous movie star – a unique WA character who touched the lives of so many people – simply google RED DOG.
A perennial statement of the local-community’s collaborative spirit, this thought-provoking sculpture is cleverly designed using materials from the local mine site. To many locals, it stands testament to the community’s artistic and cultural maturity.
There’s also a family-friendly Disc Golf Course – just like Golf, but with frisbees!

A STEP BACK IN TIME.
Old Onslow
A visit to the refurbished-ruins of Old Onslow townsite – including the pioneer cemetery and the century-old jetty – is not to be missed.
The original townsite, abandoned in 1925, is now lovingly presented as a very popular tourist attraction.
Free to enter, it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself into Australia’s pioneer past. As you explore the remaining structures still visible at the old townsite, learn more about the hardy, never-say-die settlers. Of course, the spectre of death was very
real in this era, especially for the pearl divers. Many chilling stories await your discovery.
The original Onslow site was proclaimed a town in 1883. For many years, its jetty and port supported the nearby pastoral stations along the Ashburton River and the mines, including gold, copper and lead, found in the hinterland. All of this
colorful history and heritage is proudly documented and cleverly displayed.
The Goods Shed Museum is a hub of knowledge, with a variety memorabilia, historic artefacts and re-discovered objects on display. In addition, a visit to the mighty Ashburton River helps place all of this human endeavor into perspective.

Karijini Visitor Guide 47
Unseen and unheard by so many, the Mackerel Islands are ready and waiting.
A group of pristine islands located off the Pilbara coast – accessible through Onslow – you can enjoy world-class fishing and diving in an environment where it’s taken 3 million years to finish the landscaping.
Yes, the dinosaurs disappeared, and the tides finished tearing holes in the terrain. Only then did the sea surround these isolated islands and the unique flora flourished. Today, the islands offer a range of nature-based experiences, like whale watching, turtle nesting, bird watching or just plain relaxing.
This aquatic playground – located just off the coast of Onslow – is actually a collection of ten islands and atolls. You’re welcome to stay at two of them, Direction Island and Thevenard Island.
With the superb accommodation and facilities, along with a wide choice of
activities both planned and unplanned, it’s the ideal escape.
Whether it’s a family holiday, a group getaway, a castaway-style adventure or a romantic retreat, this is the place to book. Ask about the fishing charters, sunset 4WD tours, turtle tours and whale watching charters (in season). You can hire plaka boats (a recreational skipper’s licence is required), plus kayaks, SUP boards, body boards, snorkel sets and fishing gear.
Quite simply, be as restful or as adventurous as you choose. Some watch sea turtles on the beach or look for dolphins and whales in the blue-green seas. Others admire the kaleidoscope of colourful fish, crabs and stingrays among the coral reefs.

DIRECTION ISLANDA secluded island paradise all to yourself.
Have you ever dreamed of a secluded paradise, reserved just for you and your family? Well, stop dreaming, it’s totally possible. For the ultimate wilderness experience, book the one-and-lonely beach-shack on Direction island.
Fringed by a coral reef, the entire island will be yours to explore with up to eight of your family and friends. Apart from the solar powered beach shack – with a supply of fresh water – the island is totally untouched and undisturbed. A sun-drenched, sandy jewel off the stunning Pilbara coast, Direction Island offers a truly unique holiday experience.
Booking is essential. www.mackerelislands.com.au (08) 9184 6444
THEVENARD ISLANDMackerel Islands Resort – the ultimate getaway.
A short 45-minute boat ride from Onslow, the Mackerel Islands Resort on Thevenard Island offers a perfect base to explore the amazing natural wonders of these teeming waters.
Secluded and seductive, it’s off the beaten track and out of this world. The kind of place you go to hide so nobody will find you. Where at least 17 species of fish are ready to come on board.
For diving, fishing or just taking in the scenery, it’s the exclusive experience you’ve always promised yourself. Wandering the island. Pondering nature. Alone with nothing but your thoughts. Insulated from time. To fish, you don’t even have to know how. You only have to say when.
Staffed by experienced guides, the tour and activity centre has everything you need, making it all so simple for you. Even more, take advantage of the gym, guest laundry and general store.
There’s a choice of two, three or five-bedroom beachfront cabins. Overlooking the bay with stunning ocean views, you follow in nobody’s footsteps.
Go wild in style on Thevenard Island. Bookings at: www.mackerelislands.com.au (08) 9184 6444
Boat transfers
You can catch the ferry transfer service from Onslow to the islands. Or, take your own boat and hire a mooring at the islands.
Scenic flight transfers
Take a charter plane to the Mackerel Islands airstrip. Scenic air-tours also operate out of Exmouth. Guest transfer direct to the islands can be arranged.

SAFETY FIRST. ALWAYS.
It’s a beautiful country, but it can be dangerous. When travelling such vast distances, you need to be aware of the risks and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others.
Always carry plenty of water and plan out where your next available fuel service is.
In parks and reserves, it is always advisable to stay on existing tracks. If you do get lost, stay where you are. You’ll be found sooner if you don’t stray from the vehicle.
Likewise, if your vehicle breaks down or becomes stuck, stay with your vehicle. A vehicle is much easier to spot from the air than a person.
When travelling through the Pilbara, you must remember to constantly check the road conditions. Due to weather, bushfires and road works, conditions can change very quickly.
To check reports for current updates on road conditions, call the Main Roads 24 Hour Information Line: Main Roads - 24 Hour Information 138 138
