otel, villa and private house interiors have become a major part of

interest in the industry. The luxury furniture industry is a part of Hthe US$431.8 billion global furniture market. The recent years

have witnessed a rise in the number of millionaires in emerging markets

such as Russia, Brazil, China and India and these potential luxury buyers

are expected to influence the sector.

Concept of 'lifestyle' and the greater brand consciousness have increased

the demand for these luxury products in different countries. Be it a com-

mon studio apartment in London or a beach resort in Bali, luxury furniture

marks its presence in every corner of the world. For instance, Sheraton

Hotel in Pattaya, Thailand, which has secured special coverage in this

edition of ours, has been a masterpiece in the aforementioned genre. In

order to give a larger-than-life experience to its guests during their hard-

earned holidays, this premier group of hotels has not been a miser. They

have taken care of every detail and ensured the best of luxury resulting in

zenith of hospitality.

Italy being one of the main producing countries of such designer, contem-

porary furniture will introduce the latest line of products in coming April

in the most celebrated annual event Salone Internazionale del Mobile- the

Mecca of the furniture industry. Estimating their prep-stage it seems quite

obvious that this year too it will be a benchmark event where luxury, classic

or contemporary furniture will unfold itself in a whole new trend-setting

avatar.

IPEA reports that 2013 will be a difficult year for the

French furniture industry: the drop in the construction

of accommodation combined with the fall in the

purchasing power of couples is going to automatically

lead to a fall in demand. Prospects for 2013 are directly

linked to the housing projects which will be under

300.000. They were 340.000 in 2012. As shown by the

curves presented below, we can see that, over a long

period of time the furniture market has been directly

linked to the new housing projects. Despite that, the

purchase intention of consumers keeps looking good,

even though it is slightly decreasing.

The ninth Wallpaper Design Awards, has awarded Ron Gilad Designer of the year. Gilad strives to give weighty materials like steel and marble a lightness and dynamism. Gilad's new collection of furniture for Molteni&C has the basic geometric form. Ron Gilad's new collection of furnishings, Grado, emphasises the basic geometric shapes. Surfaces are rotated and rounded off; the wooden and glass tables and the bookcases, in particular, create a shift that moves from an angle of 90° to one of 45° without corners; a cube is extracted from its volume, leaving a void emphasised by a mark of red paint. The use of colours such as red, yellow and blue emphasises the basic shapes.

spent my childhood there, my interest in design

came from my family (my mother was a glass

field.

LN: I believe one way to keep up with the concept

of sustainability is to produce fewer and better

things and not lose sight of the bigger picture –

the materials, production, lifespan, tradition,

living culture, architecture and natural

surroundings. That is a challenge for any designer

who concerns himself with this topic.

LN: I cannot define my design, but I try to merge,

in my work, several design philosophies and

traditions that come from different realities, but

very strong at the same time.

LN: It is difficult to say 'how long it takes' because

each product is different but there are basic steps

that I always use while designing, research into

that specific typology of object/product, making

sketches and scale models then creating a 3D

computer model to check proportions and

functionality, this step opens up a ping pong table

FAE: Tell us about a design that was very

special to you?

FAE: How did the Lucanichetto design studio

form?

FAE: Who are your favourite designers?

Which of their designs you liked most?

LN: We are preparing some product and

exhibition for Milan Design Week.

LN: My favourite product is always the next I am

going to do. This is because I always try to put my

“goal” a step beyond. Obviously I am attached to

some of my projects, for example Mille Bolle

Vases for Salviati which has been my first design

piece in production and O-Space lamp for

Foscarini, which gave me high level visibility in

the design world.

LN: In 2006 after some years of association with

companies such as Foscarini, Salviati, Venini I

decided to open my first studio in the industrial

part of Venice. In 2011, I opened another studio in

Stockholm and from then I divided myself

between Venice and Stockholm.

LN: There are so many designers that influenced

or inspired me that are difficult to list all, but I

want to say that some time ago I saw a movie

about Charles and Ray Eames life and I've been

literally “flashed” by it, my consideration about

this famous couple was already very high and now

it has grown up further on.

FAE: Which product design has been most

challenging for you?

FAE: What is the biggest mistake one can

make while designing?

FAE: Tell us about some of your award

winning designs.

LN: When I started my collaboration with

Offecct, I proposed them a project for a bench for

public spaces. It was a huge bench which should

be produced using a particular roto moulding

material that could give to it a soft thickness.

Offecct liked the project very much, and started

making prototypes.

But the project suddenly stopped as there was

only one supplier who was able to make the bench

and this was in Italy. This meant that the bench

should have been shipped from Italy to Sweden

and then to rest of the world. Offecct thought it

was not eco-friendly, since the bench was really

big.

So the bench hasn't been produced, even if

Offecct liked it very much and we together spent a

lot of time developing it, and that was big

challenge for me but I learned a lot.

LN: For me the biggest mistake will be not having

any communication, dialogue, sharing of

knowledge between me and the companies,

because that are fundamental parts of my work,

without which it will be difficult for me to design

a product.C

Claudio Luti, President of Cosmit and owner and chairman of Kartell spoke to us on and about the show. Read on to know the true story:

FAE: Organising the show as President, how does it make any difference to you?Claudio Luti: different to organise just the Kartell stand from organising an entire fair – the Salone Internazionale del Mobile – where more than 2,500 exhibitors participate! It speaks for itself! I would rather say it is extremely exciting and challenging to coordinate and supervise everything, from the smallest detail to the main side event which this year has been commissioned by Cosmit to Pritzker Prize Jean Nouvel. everyone has his/her place and know-how, where everybody is part of the complex mechanism and, consequently, of its success. It's my first time and I'm like a child …curious and excited to work for it and to celebrate it in April!

FAE: What will be your expectations from the show?CL: Since the Salone Internazionale del Mobile is the most important furniture fair in the world, the biggest challenge is to maintain this leadership. Cosmit, as the organiser, must always purchase quality by offering better services to exhibitors and visitors. We have to continue its long and beautiful history of life, giving continuity to it, following its natural evolution and always trying to keep up with time. As its President I'd like to maintain the same winning strategy.

FAE: What are the new ventures we can experience this year?CL: The new venture will be 'Project: officie for living', the side event by Jean Nouvel which will certainly be something interesting a n d w i l l d r a w

international attention. This event will be signifacant since it has been expressly commisisioned by Cosmit to Jean Nouvel, as an important thinker in the workspace world. The project will document the tremendous changes that have changed the face of living and work spaces alike over the past few years. It will be a project that frees up the office space. It will consist five completely original scenarios which illustrate a new concept of workspace.

the best of the furniture and lighting products. It is like a circle in the sense that exhibitors are pushed to present new innovative products because they know that they will be seen by nearly 300,000 trade operators – from interior designers, architect, buyers, distributors etc – and by more than 5,000 journalists that will present them on their magazines and newspapers. All these people come here as they all well know that all new products are presented here for the first time.

FAE: From a designers' perspective do you believe this year the event will help the designers to bloom?CL: Designers too are interested in participating for the same reasons I have just mentioned. At the Saloni you get the widest visibility and media coverage than anywhere else. The Salone Satellite is an initiative of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, a small but very powerful event inside the Salone that helps and promote designers under 35. It gets them visibility especially among the exhibiting companies which draw from it the future young talents. Many famous designers were born here like MataliCrasset, the Front, Carlo Contin, Xavier Lust, or the Indian SatyendraPakhalé.
