KarnatakaBankconsolidateditsstorageinfrastructureandimplementedaHitachitieredstoragesolutionthatprovidesathreewaydisasterrecoverysystemtoensurezerodataloss.Thebank’smainopera-tionsarenowrunfromadatacenterinBangalore.Forthedisasterrecoveryplan,anearlinedatacenterhasbeenestablished.Thisoperatesinasynchronousmodewiththemaindatacenter,whichmeansalltransactionsthathappenarestoredinthemaindatacenteraswellasthenearlineoneatthesametime.Aremotedatacenterinadifferentcityrunsinanasynchronousmode.Thisthreedatacenteroperationworksinsuchawaythattherecanbenodatalossintheeventofadisaster.Ifthemaindatacentergoesdown,thenearlinedatacenter,whichisalwaysonstandby,

Business ProblemKarnatakaBankrunsvariouscriticalapplications,suchasOracle,FinacleandMicrosoft®SQLServer®,whichmadethedisasterrecoveryprocessverytediousandtime-consuming.Thebank’sdisasterrecoverydrillinitiation,whichhandledthehandovertothedisastersite,applicationbyapplication,withseparateprocesses,tookthreetofourhourstocomplete.

Seekingadisasterrecoveryplanthatwouldbesimplerandfastertoexecute,KarnatakaBanklookedforacentralizedapproach,notanapplication-wiseexecu-tion,whichalsohadtoensurezerodataloss.Italsowantedastorageanddisasterrecoveryinfrastructurethatwouldworkforthenextfiveyears,withoutrequiringfreshinvestmentsinbetween.Thesystemhadtodeliverhighperformanceaswellasbecompletelyscalabletosupportthebank’sgrowthovertheyears.
Withitsexistinginfrastructureofdistribut-edsilosofstorage,KarnatakaBankfacedchallengesthataffectedservicedeliverylevels.Backupsofaday’stransactionwouldrenderthebank'sdatabaseunavail-ableforfourhours.Therestoreprocesswouldalsotakeaslong.

takesover.Thisalsostartsasynchingofdatawiththeremotecenter.Thebankcontinuestooperatewithoutmissingabeat,butallthedatatransmissionhappensfromtheremotedatacenter.
Bybuildinginredundanciesateverylevelthesystemhasbeenplannedsuchthatthereisnosinglepointoffailure.Thebankwillcontinuetofunctioneveniffailureoccursinanyequipmentanywhere.
Theconnectivitytothedatacentersispro-videdbyBharatSancharNigamLimited(BSNL).KarnatakaBankisthefirstbanktousepublicinfrastructurefordisasterrecoveryactivities.Theentireprojectwascompletedwithinthreemonthsandsawasmoothimplementation.
Hitachi Data Systems Consolidates the Storage SetupThesolutionusedarangeofHitachi(re-brandedbySun)hardwareandsoftwareforthedisasterrecoveryandstoragesetup.
EachofthethreedatacentersareequippedwiththeHitachiUniversalStoragePlatform®V(Sun9990V).WiththeUniversalStoragePlatformV,theKarnatakaBankgetsahighperformanceandscalablesolutionthatintegratesstor-agevirtualization,dynamicprovisioningandlogicalpartitioningfeatures.
HitachiUniversalReplicatorsoftwareisusedtoreplicatedataeffectivelyamongthethreedatacenterlocations.Dataisreplicatedbetweenthebank’sprimaryandnearlinesitesusingsynchronousreplica-tion,andbetweenitsnearlineanddisasterrecoverysitesasynchronously.Withitsabilitytoasynchronouslyreplicateoveranydistanceinaheterogeneousenviron-mentandmultipleapplications,UniversalReplicatorsoftwarehelpsthebanksignifi-cantlylowerthecacheandresourcecon-sumptionofitsprimarystoragesystem.Inaddition,thedeltaresynchfeature,whencoupledwiththreedatacentermultihopsupport,providesthebankwiththemostconcurrentmultisitereplicationcapabilityandenhanceddataprotectionavailable.
ThebankusestheHitachiIn-SystemReplicationsoftwarebundle(includingHitachiShadowImage®HeterogeneousReplicationandHitachiCopy-on-Writesoftware)forhighspeed,nondisruptivelocalmirroring.TheprocessrapidlycreatesmultiplecopiesofcriticalbankdatawithintheUniversalStoragePlatformsthatcanbequicklyrecoveredintheeventofdisas-terordatacorruption.
Inaddition,HitachiVirtualPartitionManagersoftwareenablesthelogicalpar-titioningofports,cacheanddiskcapacity
ontheUniversalStoragePlatforms,whileHitachiTuningManagersoftwarehelpsthebankmanagethestoragenetworkresources.Thismaximizesstorageutiliza-tionandimprovesstorageperformanceandcapacitymanagement,resultinginreducedtotalcostofownership.
