Government of Karnataka
In order to give impetus and to further the science and technology related
activities in the State of Karnataka as well as to popularize science among
different cross sections of civil society, especially in rural areas, Government
of Karnataka established “Karnataka Science and Technology Academy” under
the Chairmanship of Late Padma Vibhushana Prof. U.R. Rao, an internationally
renowned Space Scientist and Former Chairman, Indian Space Research
Organization (ISRO) / Secretary, DOS, Govt. of India on July 30, 2005 vide GO
No. ವಿಯಇ ವಿತ್ರಮ 2005.
The Government of Karnataka has reconstituted the General Body of KSTA
vide GO No. ITBT 67 STS 2019 dated 21.04.2020 under the Chairmanship of
Prof. S Ayyappan, Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Imphal and
Former Director General, ICAR/ Secretary, Department of Agricultural
Research and Education, GOI, with 12 members comprising of renowned
educationists, distinguished scientists and senior administrators. Dr H. Honne
Gowda, Special Director (Technical), DST, Govt. of Karnataka is the Member
Secretary of KSTA.
Details of the major programs successfully organized by KSTA across the State
during 2019 – ‘20 are as follows:
1. Karnataka Science and Technology Academy Annual Conference
International conference on Life, Chemical and Health Sciences was
successfully organized during 24 - 26 October 2019 in association with
Ramaiah Arts, Science and Commerce College, Bengaluru.
The conference was inaugurated by Padmabushana Awardee,
Prof. G. Padmanabhan, Former Director, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru
on October 24, 2019. Dr. M. R. Jayaram, Chancellor, Ramaiah University of
Applied Sciences presided over the function. Consulate General of
Netherlands, Mr. Gert Heikoop was the Chief Guest and Dr. H. Honne Gowda,

Special Secretary (Technical), Department of Science and Technology,
Government of Karnataka graced the function as Guest of Honour. Dr. A.
Nagarathna, Principal, Ramaiah College welcomed the dignitaries, while Dr. A.
M. Ramesh, CEO, KSTA proposed the vote of thanks.
The valedictory function of the conference was presided over by Dr. H. S.
Nagaraja, Founder Director, BASE and Member, KSTA. Dr. K. M. Roopa, HOD
Department of Mathematics, Bangalore Institute of Technology and Shri G.
Ramachandra, Chief of Finance, Gokula Education Foundation, distributed
prize and certificates to the winners of the poster competition.
In the three-day conference 15 invited special lectures were delivered by
distinguished scientists, eminent technocrats and renowned educationists on

Synthetic biology: an emerging area of bioengineering and biotechnology
Around 700 delegates including teaching faculty of universities and colleges,
degree and PG science students, science writers, officers of line departments
and representatives of government autonomous organizations participated in
the conference.
More than 300 research posters in Life, Chemical and Health Sciences were
presented in the Conference. A panel of experts evaluated and selected 4 best
posters in each discipline for cash prizes (I Prize – Rs. 10,000/- and II Prize –
Rs. 7,500/- and two consolation prizes of Rs. 5,000/-).

2. Mathematics and Its Applications – National Conference
National Conference on ‘Mathematics and Its Applications’ was held in
association with the Department of Mathematics, Karnatak University,
Dharwad during November 7 - 8, 2019.
The conference was inaugurated by Hon’ble MLC and Former Minister Shri
Basavaraj Horatti on November 07, 2019. Shri Aravind Bellada, Hon’ble MLA,
Dharwad and Shri S. V. Sankanur, Hon’ble MLC, graced the occasion as Chief
Guests. Prof. Veerappa Gowda, Dean, TIFR-CAM and Dr. A. M. Ramesh, CEO,
KSTA were the Guests of Honour. Dr. Shirala Shetty, Vice Chancellor presided
over the function. Prof. P. M. Patil gave an overview of the program and
welcomed the dignitaries, while Shri V. K. Srinivasu, Scientific Officer, KSTA
proposed the vote of thanks.

Around 600 delegates including teaching faculty, degree and PG science
students participated in the conference. More than 200 research posters in
basic and applied Mathematical were presented in the Conference by
scientists, faculty and PG students and research scholars. A panel of experts
evaluated and selected 4 best posters in each discipline for cash prizes (I Prize

3. Innovations in Chemical Sciences – National Conference
National Conference on ‘Innovations in Chemical Sciences’ was held in
association with Department of Studies and Research in Chemistry, Mysore
University, Mysuru during January 30-31, 2020.
Dr. K. N. Ganesh, Director, Indian Science Education and Research, Tirupati
inaugurated the conference on January 30, 2020 and delivered a keynote
address. Prof. R. Shivappa, Registrar, University of Mysore presided over the
function. Prof. K. S. Rangappa, Former Vice Chancellor, Mysore University and
President, 107th Indian Science Congress and Dr. A. M. Ramesh, CEO, KSTA
graced the occasion as Chief Guests. The conference Organising Secretary and
Chairman, Department of Chemistry, Mysore University welcomed the
dignitaries, while Dr. Anand R, Senior Scientific Officer, KSTA proposed the
vote of thanks.

4. Science and Technology Conference in Kannada
Third Science and Technology Conference in Kannada on the theme “New
Vistas in Science and Technology” was successfully organised in association
with BLDE Institution’s S. B. Arts and K.C.P. Science College, Vijayapura during
February 18-19, 2020.
This state level conference was inaugurated on February 18, 2020 by Prof. K.
Chidananda Gowda, Former Vice Chancellor, a well-known educationist and
Member, KSTA. Dr. Ashok Alur, Vice Chancellor, Bharatiya Engineering Science

and Technology Innovation University, Anantapur delivered keynote address.
Dr. Shivananda Kanavi, Visiting Professor, NIAS, Bengaluru and Dr. Udaya
Shankar Puranik, Member, International Technical Committee, McKinsey and
Dr. A. M. Ramesh, CEO, KSTA graced the occasion as the Guests of Honour. Dr.
Girija Nimbala, Organising Secretary welcomed the dignitaries, while Shri
Mahadevegowda, Administrative Officer, KSTA proposed the vote of thanks.

Sciences were presented in Kannada during the Conference. A panel of

10,000/, II Prize – Rs. 7,500/-, III Prize – Rs. 5,000/- and consolation prizes of
Rs. 3,000/).
5. International Conference on Physics and Allied Sciences
In order to benefit the students, faculty and interested people of Kalyana
Karnataka region KSTA, in association with B. V. Bhumareddy Degree College
organised an international conference on Physics and Allied Sciences during
March 11 - 13, 2020.
The conference was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Member of Parliament
Sri. Bhagwanth Khuba on March 11, 2020. The program was presided over by
Dr. Bhimashankar C Bilgundi, President, HKE Society. Dr. Shivanand S
Devaramani, Vice-President, HKE Society was the Guest of Honour. Dr. A M
Ramesh, CEO, KSTA and Dr. Prakash Wadgaonkar, Scientist, NCL, Pune graced
the occasion as the Chief Guests. Dr. S. K. Satnoor, Principal, BVB College
welcomed the dignitaries, while Shri V. G. Umesh, Scientific Officer, KSTA

Quantum Technology with Ultra-cold atoms
About 450 participants comprising of students, research scholars, scientists
and educationists from different parts of the country including Karnataka,
Maharashtra, Telangana and Rajasthan attended the conference. Around 120
research posters related to Physics and Allied Sciences were presented in the
Conference. Out of which, 90 best posters were selected and a compendium
was brought out in the form of an e-book with ISBN number.
6. Publication of Bimonthly Magazine – Vijnana Loka
‘Vijnana Loka’, a bimonthly science magazine is being regularly published in
Kannada by KSTA since August 2007. During FY 2019- ‘20, six issues of the
magazines were published in the months of May, July, September &
November of the year 2019 and January & March of 2020. About 2000 copies
of each issue of the magazine were printed and distributed free of cost to pre-
university and science degree colleges, science centres, libraries and other
organizations across the state. All the issues of Vijnanaloka magazine were
uploaded in KSTA website – www.kstacademy.in

7. Special Lecture Series/Workshop in Science for PG Students
To provide an opportunity for the students to widen their horizon of
understanding in advanced scientific research and also to encourage them to
pursue career in R&D, Special Lecture Series/Workshops were organised in
different subjects of basic and applied sciences for Post Graduate students.
Each Special Lecture Series/Workshop was organised for 2-3 days. During FY
2019-’20, nine programs were successfully organised which benefited around
1200 post graduate students of different universities of the state. Details of

This program is being organised with the aim of providing an opportunity for
teaching faculty /research scholars to broaden the horizon of their knowledge

9. Celebration of National and International Days of Importance related
to Science and Technology
In order to develop scientific temperament among students and to encourage
scientific thinking and creativity as well as to understand the
scientific developments and advancements, selected national and
international days of importance were celebrated. Two lectures related to
theme of the program and competitions for students viz., essay writing
(Kannada & English), model making, quiz, etc. were organised in each
program. The winners of the competitions were awarded cash prizes and
certificates. During FY 2019-'20 two programs at KSTA office and two
programs in association with degree colleges were organised and a total of
520 students were benefited from this program.

10. Programs for High School Students
In order to recognise and foster curiosity in children, KSTA in association with
Egg Heads Pvt. Ltd., organised STING 2020 - science model exhibition on
January 18, 2020. High School students from different parts of the State
demonstrated 35 models in the competition.
11. Divisional and State Level Science Drama, Mathematics, Drawing/
Painting and Essay Competitions
KSTA, for the first time, organised divisional and state level competitions for
degree students in science drama, mathematics quiz & model making,
drawing and essay in Kannada for degree and PG students.
Divisional level competitions were held at 4 divisions of the State viz.,
Bengaluru, Mysuru, Kalaburgi and Belagavi in association with the following
organisations and later state level competitions were held at Bengaluru in
KSTA office, Bengaluru during March 6-7, 2020:

State level Competitions were inaugurated by well-known theatre, TV and
Cine Artists, Shri Sunder and Smt. Rohini Raghunandan. Science drama and
mathematics model competitions were held on March 6, 2020. Mathematics
quiz and drawing competitions were held on March 7, 2020. In the State level
competitions, 162 winners of four divisional level competitions were
participated.

In order to provide a platform for specially abled students to showcase their
talent as well as to build self-confidence in them, KSTA organised following

13. Small Grants
In order to create scientific awareness and popularise science among students
and general public, KSTA supported educational institutions, universities and
other organisations to organise science programs across the state. During

14. Nano Jata Program
Organised Nano Jata program for science degree students in association with
the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Science (CeNS) and Karnataka Science
and Technology Promotions Society (KStePS) on January 21, 2020. In this
event, two distinguished talks by eminent scientists related to

nanotechnology was organised. In addition, Nano Kit demonstration, Hands-
on training and quiz were also organised.
The Nano Jata event was inaugurated on January 21, 2020 by Professor G. U.
Kulkarni, Distinguished Scientist and Director, Centre for Nano and Soft
Matter Science (CeNS). Around 110 degree students of biotechnology and
agricultural sciences have participated and learned use of nano kit.
