The design of this community center explores the juxtaposition between the idea of landscape as a mutable surface and the perceived notion of architecture as permanent. As a result, the series of connecting structures act as a marker in time within their ephemeral landscape.

This concept originated through situating the site within its history. Riverdale Park has undergone many topographical and program-specific changes since the early 19th century. Most notably, due to excessive flooding and the inability for urban development, the adjacent Don River was channalized, subsequently altering the configuartion of the surrounding topography. This change indicates the altering quality of the land, not only through its natural evolution, but by the hand of man as well. The idea of landscape on the site thus becomes understood as an artifice, malleable to change in its past, present and future.

The design of the center is thus informed by the sites history. The man-made notation of the contour denotes the geometry of the exterior facades, only being interrupted by a series of interior architectural pathways in between the structures. The volumes follow the slope of the hill, its roofline mirroring the sites incline. Two stepped ramps direct circulation down into the center, which is embedded within its landscape, to lend a further understanding of its topography and to generate strategic framed views.

Three iterations of folds are developed to respond to the levels of activity generated within the space. The more active the individual, the less enclosed the form and vice versa. The reflection pods prioritize rest and thus are the most enclosed structures. The changeroom facilities unfold enough to provide space to execute the given tasks and yet maintain privacy. The sunning platforms require the greatest rigour of activity and thus possess the gentlest fold promoting socialization such as sun bathing and diving.

To provide optimal comfort, a series of body positions from seated to reclining were examined and fused together to create a lofted surface. This surface is executed through a woven pattern: at one end the weave is taut to accommodate an upright pose, whereas the other end is loosely woven to facilitate stretching out.

The reflection pods not only serve as a place for shade, reflection and relaxation during the day, but act as lanterns illuminating the path at night. To allow for the desired moment of contemplation to be achieved at night, the pods are equipped with motion sensors and thus grow dim once occupied.

This project articulates the geologic compression that occurs in metamorphic rock into an architectural language through alternating folds and voids. The resulting honeycomb pattern is imposed onto a lofted surface that joins two different types of geologic folds: symmetrical and assymetrical. The resulting structure generates a delicate dappling of light and is adaptable to a plethora of programmatic activities.

Using the language developed in support + span, the lofted surface is duplicated and repeated following the queues of metamorphic compression. The stacked surfaces thus become occupyable through punctured passages and their network of ramps. The support system is clad with glazing so as not to interrupt the atmospheric effects of the honeycomb pattern.

This project attempts to reconcile the competing demands of transportation networks in the city of Toronto. It focuses on an intersection where various pedestrian, bicycle, automotive and rail corridors overlap. As opposed to the current situation, which prioritizes vehicular traffic at the expense of user experience, the design proposal envisions a new kind of human-scale transportation hub which is both ecologically sensitive and highly utilitarian.

A land bridge is proposed that allows pedestrians and cyclists to circulate in the open air, while rail and automotive traffic can flow unimpeded below. This land-bridge not only connects various points in the site in an efficient way, but also supports a phytoremediative ecology that can cleanse the site of pollutants associated with traffic flows. Various amenities such as changerooms, a cafe, and a BIXI bike rental station are integrated within the architecture of the bridge for the convenience of travellers passing through.

The goal of this exercise was to use the conceptual template of the Gantenbein Winery facade and adapt its parameters using the grasshopper interface. A series of curvilinear walls were generated that expose a range of circular patterns through assigned rotational values.

This project articulates the concepts in Zaha Hadids Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio through model and drawing. The urban carpet informs the circulation within the building and thus represented as a key element. The structure is understood through its volumetric characteristics and their orientation to the urban context. In model form, these volumes are extrapolated into mobile entities that reveal their corresponding sectional information. The plans and sections appear as fragments, proving the discontinuity between the interior and exterior forms.

case study: remapping the cityin collaboration with Doug Robb

Extrapolating from a notational system that was generated to describe the analysis of private and public space in the 1748 Nolli Map of Rome, the spaces at intersection of Bathurst Street and Saint Clair Avenue were similarly categorized and colour coded. As a result, not only were the accessible and non-accessible interior and exterior spaces distinguished, but more ambiguous categories such as semi-accessible and barriers to access were formulated. A time lapse analysis was applied to the intersection of commercial concentration in order to further indicate the fluctuation between accessible and non-accessible interior domains.

This study documents and dissect the motion of a corkscrew in the process of its assembly as well as its function as it opens a wine bottle. By recording each phase of the motion in one drawing, new dynamic forms result from the

The latter half of the investigation of motion entailed the creation of a form that mimics the movement of the original object. Through the steaming of balsa wood, the curvature of the corkscrew was adopted. Not only does this suggest the action of opening a wine bottle through the binary tension of curves, but also illustrates the inherent form of the screw.

Within this exercise the body is considered an active participant within its environment. A garment of clothing acts as a vehicle for motion adapting to the movements of its operator.

In this case, the knitted cardigan embodies the notion of comfort through which the primary motion is the wrapping of the body. The oversized collar is prioritized and an increase in the density of its material is yielded by the fold.

By documenting the movement of the collar as it folds and wraps around the body, inspiration for a new garment is found. This transformation is executed by cutting sections of equivalent widths. The collar becomes multiplied throughout the surface area of the original garment. These sections are then woven back into a new pattern.
