Head Lice
There has been a reported case of Head Lice in the school. Parents are asked to check their child/children’s heads and in those instances where head lice or eggs are found, treat your child’s hair. We ask for parents to be diligent in the process to enable us as a school to seek control over an insistence problem. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the school. Head lice do not transmit infectious diseases – they are transmitted by having head to head contact with someone who has head lice. Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. Information brochures are available from school or from The Department of Education and Training website. Children with head lice can be re admitted to school after head lice treatment has commenced, there is no need to miss school. Helpful hints :
- Using a conditioner and comb method regularly is the best way to detect head lice and minimise the problem also
- Tying back hair can help prevent the spread of head lice.
Cross Country
On a miserable day weather wise the Katunga Primary, Waaia-Yalca South Primary and Strathmerton Primary School
students met at Katunga to compete in the annual interschool cross country event. Luckily for the competitors the rain
eased before the 9/10 year olds ran their two kilometre race. This race was a very keenly fought contest between two
Katunga brothers. Harry McDonald held on to narrowly beat his brother Ben. Viv Russo was not far behind in third
place. The Katunga Primary School boys were well ahead of the rest of the group. The girls two kilometre race was won
by Abbie Smith followed by Bethany Hibma both from Katunga Primary School. Caitlyn Brooks from Strathmerton
Primary School was not far behind in third place. Aida Hickey and Mary Caldow from Katunga Primary finished in fourth
and fifth place.
The 11 year olds also had a race distance of two kilometres. Sid McNeill won from Strathmerton Primary and Nathan
Simpson and Josh McKay finished in second and third place respectively. Unfortunately the girl’s 11 year old race did
not have any competitors that ran the whole distance.
There was a small break before the 12/13 year old event. During this time the rain became steadier but it did not
dampen the student’s spirit. This event was held over three kilometres. It was a test of mental spirit, running ability
and endurance. Katunga Primary School dominated the girl’s race where Sophie Wilson was victorious, Paige Gilmour
finished second and Sammy Simpson came third. The boy’s race was also a hotly contested event with Katunga Primary
once again having the trifecta. Cameron Harding won followed by Bailey Smith and Dylan Baker.
The next event for these talented sportspeople is the Division Cross Country held at Princess Park, Shepparton on Friday
May 13.

Reconciliation Day at Numurkah Secondary College
National Reconciliation Week 2016
OUR HISTORY, OUR STORY, OUR FUTURE
Each year National Reconciliation Week (NRW) celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships
shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.
Numurkah Secondary College, Numurkah Primary School, Katunga Primary School and Strathmerton
Primary School are very excited to be taking part in a combined NRW Celebration Day, which will be
held on Tuesday May 31st. Our teachers and students will have the opportunity to learn about the
culture and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and to think about the
importance of reconciliation for all Australians.
We are very fortunate to have an amazing array of activities to enjoy on the day, including traditional
and contemporary dance, traditional aboriginal sporting games, story-telling, weaving, traditional and
contemporary music, painting, bush tucker and artefact presentations. In the lead up to NRW
Celebration Day, students will also learn more about significant historical events such as the 1967
Referendum, The Stolen Generations and Mabo.

Also 50% of what is raised by our students will go towards new educational resources for our great school at Katunga Primary. Various
awards will be given to the highest fundraisers.
We hope that everyone can be involved and support this great cause
VCOP Big Write
Last week Mrs Edmunds, Mrs Patching and Mr McKenzie attended a professional development session entitled the VCOP Big Write. The Big Write is a program to teach writing for all ages. We will be phasing this program into our curriculum in 2016 and have it embedded into our programs in 2017 and beyond. As such on some Monday nights we will be sending home a topic that the students will be writing about the next day. This is called “The Big Talk”. What we are asking you as parents to do is to discuss this topic with your children for ten to fifteen minutes and give them ideas or follow up on the student’s ideas of what to write about the next day. We started trialling this program this week. It was so good to walk through the classrooms during this writing time. The students were working in a calm, quiet classroom and produced some amazing narratives. We will not be running the big write next week due to NAPLAN but will have another topic for you to talk about in the next couple of weeks.

Listening to our Children Read
Reading in our modern world is more important than ever. When your kids see you reading and writing in everyday life – reading for pleasure, sharing a story with them, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card, reading street signs, or reading and writing emails – it teaches them that reading and writing are useful skills.
STUDENT VOICE
TERM 2, WEEK 4 May 4, 2016
8 Thrive, Strive and Achieve
Reading with your child at home will help them in all learning areas at school. Often teachers will ask you to listen to your child read at home. This is a good way to support your child's reading. You can borrow books from your school library or your local library.
What parents can do at home to help their kids with reading
Be confident that your child will learn to read. Give positive messages and involve them in everyday conversations and opportunities to read.
Read aloud to your child. It helps them to learn about the language of books and will encourage them to enjoy books and reading.
Make reading enjoyable and talk about books, magazines and computer stories that you have read together.
Try not to let television intrude on reading time. Make a special time for reading with your child, away from interruptions.
Listen to your child read as often as you can, every day if possible, even if only for a short time.
Give books in print or electronic form as treats and presents.
Hints for listening to your child read
When reading together at home try to make the time relaxed, enjoyable and positive. Vary it. Read together, read to your child and take turns or have them read to you.
Before reading, talk about the cover, the title and the pictures, and discuss what the book may be about.
During reading, discuss what has been read up to that point and predict what might happen next.
After you've finished reading with your child, talk and ask questions about the story and the pictures.
Useful reading tips
When your child is reading and encounters words that are difficult for them, use the Three Ps technique ‘Pause, Prompt, Praise' to support them.
Pause: when your child comes to a word they don't know, try not to jump in straight away. Wait and give your child time to work out the word.
Prompt: if your child successfully works out the problem word, suggest they go back to the beginning of the sentence and re-read it (to recap meaning) before reading on. If your child has not worked out the problem word, prompt them with some quick, low-key suggestions. If prompts are not working, simply tell your child the correct word. Try not to spend too much time prompting, as your child will find it difficult to maintain the overall meaning of what they are reading.
Praise: praise your child's reading efforts and successes.
Things to remember about reading
The goal of reading is always to make sense of what is read.
Try to be interested, supportive and enjoy the time together.
Read with your child anywhere and at any time; don't forget that many everyday experiences provide opportunities to put reading and writing into action.
Visit and use a library near you. Borrow books for yourself as well as for your child.
Talk to your child's classroom teacher or the principal for further help and advice.
