Ryan June 11, 1936 - Nov. 20, 2007 William Johnson “Jay” Ryan, 71, long-time Norton attorney, died Nov. 20 at the Norton County Hospital. The son of William B. and Alois (Johnson) Ryan, he was born June 11, 1936, in Smith Center. Mr. Ryan attended Norton schools and Kansas State Uni- versity. He graduated from the Washburn University School of Law. On Dec. 21, 1962, he and Ro- berta Jo Wray were married in Norton, where he had established his law practice. Mr. Ryan was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Norton and was active in the church choir, Methodist Men, and had served on the Board of Trust- ees. He was a member of the Nor- ton Lions Club and had served on the Norton City Council, Andbe Home Board, Norton-Decatur Co-op Board, City Beautification, and as President of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a past county and city attorney and was a member of the Washburn University School of Law Association Board of Gover- nors and was admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was also appointed to the Kansas Bar Association Ethics Committee. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity and Delta Tau Delta social fraternity. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Isis Shrine and a past mem- ber of the Air Force Reserves. He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, John C. Ryan. Survivors include: his wife, Roberta, of the home in Norton; one son, William R. and Lynn Ryan, Stilwell; three daughters, Terri Hartloff, Wichita, Marti and Kevin Karlin, Shawnee and Jill and Eddie Lively, Norton; one brother, Don and Carol Ryan, Norton; and eight grandchildren, Travis and Jessica Ryan, Kayleigh Hartloff, Alexis, Gavin and Anna Lively and Kayla Karlin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Unit- ed Methodist Church, Norton. A memorial has been estab- lished in his name. Talented members of two bands will present a Christ- mas Concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2, at the high school auditorium in Ober- lin. Members of the bands, “Clueless” and “Oberlin Area Concert Band” live in Oberlin, Atwood, McCook and Danbury. The Oberlin Area Concert Band is under the direction of Neal Russell. The concert is an Oberlin Arts and Humanities Com- mission event. Admission is by season ticket or $10 for adults, and $5 for students grades 1-12 at the door.
