PresenterPresentation NotesSpin-off: (foto links boven) LMS Internation is a world leader in computer supported dynamic analysis (acoustics, vibration, sustainability). First spin-off K.U.Leuven Research Group Mechanics (Werktuigkunde), founded in 1979.

Research collaboration (foto rechts boven): Collaboration between Samsonite and prof. Ignaas Verpoest (Leuven-Materials Research Centre) for the development of extremely light but strong suitcases. The Cosmolite suitcases of Samsonite only weigh half of what simular suitcases made from classic materials weigh. Lighter suitcases allow to save on fuel during transportation.

Spin-off: Materialise (foto links onder) has the largest number of rapid prototyping & manufacturing (=3D-printing) machines gathered in one place, in the world. Materialise develops prototypes based on the 3D-printing process (= a laser beam is used lawerwise to print an object, because a layer of powder or resin is hardened by the beam). Based on these prototypes, customers of Materialise can check their design in a tangible way. In addition to prototypes, the 3D-printing process can be used to produce end products such as design objects or lights. 3D-printing enables the use of very complex shapes, that cant be produced with classis techniques. Materialise also develops 3D-printing software and focuses on medical and dental image processing and surgery simulation.

License (foto onder midden) The main component of Atripla (=anti-HIV drug) was discovered at the Leuven Rega Institute for Medical Research. Gilead has taken a license on Atripla and put it on the market.

Spin-off (foto rechts onder): Better3Fruit developt new fruit varieties. The Kanzi-appel is an example of a new variety.
