Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright invented the world’s first air-plane! But, how did they invent it? Their invention all began with their curiosity and imagination. In their childhood, they invented a sled by drawing up a design for one. They had also invented a newspaper-folding machine, inspired by their mother’s sewing machine. They even made a printing machine by themselves. The brothers built up confidence while observing their circum-stances and followed their imagination to make even better things. The confidence they built up from their small successes became the driver for them to accept even bigger challenges later. As a result, they opened the era of flight by inventing the first airplane in human history. The small achievements you make day by day will inevitably lead to a great success.

Tuned InThe Joy of Communicating

By Byung-ryul Lee (poet)

I often think about the person I will be in the following month. All I can hope is that the per-son I will be is different from who I am now. I make a rough sketch of how a typical week looks a month from now. If I do not go through

this process and prepare myself for what’s ahead, I am more than likely to waste my time. I do not write only sitting at a desk, and I do not read only in my study. So, I often ride a train or an airplane in line with the time-table I prepared in advance. Of course, I am not always on the road, but I spend my time coloring the rough sketch I’ve drawn up in advance. I may have reached an age at which it feels like things that I need to clean up are piling up in front of me, especially if I don’t spend my time translating my plan into reality.

Writer Byung-ryul Lee

He started his literary career in 1995 when his poems ‘Good People’ and ‘On that Day’ won the Hankook Ilbo annual spring literary contest. He wrote collections of poems, such as You <Are Trying to Head Somewhere> <The Wind’s Private Life> <Splendor> and travels essays, such as <Attraction> <The Wind Blows> <I Like You and The Person Next To Me>.

We seem to live just keeping pace with the world. But, sometimes I feel as if I’m not living in parallel with the world, but I’m dragged down by the world. Like a per-son who has lost his or her way. Then, it feels like time asks me “Are you going in the direction you desire?” I look back on the direction of my life like that. What if I am going in a different direction than I had thought? Again, I set a new course. Of course, I need a standard. I want to say that my standard is “things I like.” It’s the things I like that make me who I am, after all. Needless to say the word “happiness” comes up a lot - we are drawn by the things that we want. When we set the direction of life a new, we just need to think about the things we like first. The direction we set should not be transitory. We must change the direction if it is wrong, but if not, we must give it sustainable power. To this end, we will need to look farther and wider. The world flows so fast. We can expect to grow and change only when we keep pace with the world. I don’t mean that people must change, but no matter what we do and how we live our lives, we live while receiving the light and colors of the world. This is why we need to be responsive to the micro-motions of the world. Keeping pace with the world and setting direction on that basis is no different than the effort we take to “harmonize.” I connect my clandestine paces to “things I like.” Of course, we cannot simply live life by doing whatever we want. Even if it’s not exactly ideal, we need to keep pace with people and be constantly aware of their direction as well as our own. What is important is to set direction while knowing who I am. Like we wander if we hit the road without knowing the destination, we can set direction only when we know who we are. The mysterious power of things I like produces a great deal of positive things. The positive sometimes exerts sus-tainable power. It makes us pout less and sigh less.Let’s ask ourselves what we like once a day. Let’s remind ourselves of what we want to resemble, and things that we will regret for a long time if we don’t do them right away. Let’s list things we like in our head. Such questions and lists will enable us to know who we are, and lead us to a better place. This is why we must set a direction in life, and this is what empowers us every day. Like a writer Asada Jiro said, doing what we like is not a duty, but a right.Everyone has things he or she likes. They will continu-ously enrich our lives. So I ask myself today as well, “Is my life oriented toward the things I like and want?”

Are you headedin the right direction?

In the limelightThe Joy of Communicating

N o matter how sophisticated the navi-gation system is, if it cannot detect the ever-changing environment at the right time, it’s useless. At a time when the world is changing fast, a system

designed to help you reach your destination such as a navigation system can easily become useless. If so, how can we find our true direction? “Knowing the direction is like forming a dynamic relationship between the present and the future. A navigation system can help you reach where you need to go using nearby roads, but how about a road that will take more than 10 years to reach? What if a great deal of things will change in the meantime? We can find the right direction only when we never give up trying to find where we are going, and flexibly integrate the various turning points we encounter on the way.”

The direction that Dr. Song mentions is living and moving. So, we shouldn’t be bound by stereotypes. We can go farther only if we flexibly modify the road in consideration of the present and the future. Dr. Song emphasizes that we must take an honest look at our-selves first. If we don’t know who we really are, we will find it difficult to set the right direction. Furthermore, she emphasized two things when we set direction. “First, there is more than one solution. We can find a more efficient direction when we have different per-spectives and think deeply. Second, we must continu-ously pay attention to the interaction between the changing environment and people. In an ever-chang-ing age, unpredictable factors will get in the way, and lead us in a direction that has never been predicted. We must always keep it in mind and accept it.”To harmonize with the rapidly-changing world, and maintain a direction that will last long, keeping an open mind is important. The topic Dr. Song is interested in these days is the “era of breaking the age barrier.” “These days it’s not difficult to find people in their 50’s looking as if they are in their 30’s, and people in their 60’s and 70’s who are active as if they are in their 40’s. Now, it’s meaningless to classify the lifecycle by age. I think it’s a very important code of the future that will be part of our everyday lives. This phenomenon basi-cally starts with the possibility of extending life. At a time when people live to be 100 years old, we have a new 30-year lease of life.” In <40s-50s Young People In The Latter Part Of Life>, which was recently pub-lished, Dr. Song emphasized the important of the latter part of life for people in the 40’s and 50’s, the waning years of life which used to be neglected. It is still unknown how the trends she noted will link back in with the overall direction of the enterprise. However, enterprises will be unable to avoid the gigantic move-ment of humanity, i.e. the changes in lifecycle. Then, we must put out our feelers. It will not be until society at large and enterprises harmonize with the ever-changing world that we will find a sustainable direc-tion for ourselves as individuals.

We can find the right direction only when we continually endeavor to find where we are going, and flexibly integrate the various turning points.

It is very important to set the direction of education in line with the company strategy, as education is a guide of which way to go. A round-table talk was held with outstanding lecturers and trainers in the company who set the correct train-ing direction and carry out propagation training so that all KCC employees can run in the same destination.

A better future The Joy of Communicating

Q I believe you set the direction of education in line with the company’s strategy. First, can you tell us

the basic framework of training strategy this year that HRD Institute will carry out? Sang-tak Lee We have set “fostering the talented equipped with a spirit of communication and chal-lenge” as our training strategy. This will lay the growth foundation of enterprise survival in the age of an unstable economic situation and the 4th industrial revolution, which is bringing with it new advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT (Internet of Things). Accordingly, we will establish the foundation of com-munication by nurturing capabilities required for each job position, such as target management, problem solving, and communication. We will nurture job experts who can improve business competitiveness and secure talented people who can lead the market with their preemptive response capability.

Q What is the direction of education for each divi-sion?

Min Jeung Window and glass products manufac-tured and delivered by the Jeonju and Yeoju plant are completed after processing. It’s therefore helpful for technical sales reps to fully understand the processing procedure. A few years ago, job training on installing the 3TOp (sealant, glass, window frame) of windows and doors was introduced. As part of the course, train-ees visit a large-size selling agent to see the processing line and processing procedure for themselves. promot-ing this kind of field training for the sales part will improve technical sales capabilities a lot. Sang-tak Lee One of management policies of our company emphasizes that we should provide technical support to our customers at the front contact point of the market by supplementing the technical sales part. He has emphasized that we should be able to provide

We will do our best with the thought of contributing to the nurturing of the talented persons who will lead the future of KCC.

support service in the field, instead of simple after ser-vice. Therefore, we need to think over the necessity of increasing field training, as Jeung mentioned. Chang-rak Kang Securing cost competitiveness is one of the biggest issues facing the production division. We have captured cases of successful cost saving through the Big Y project, the annual enterprise com-petitive exhibition, as well as quality circle activities. We also propagate successful cases of securing cost competitiveness through training during monthly S&Op meetings. For example, we have saved KRW 400 million of costs through standardization and read-iness activities carried out at the Munmak plant. As mentioned before, we’re pushing each business division to figure out cost saving methods by capturing and sharing exemplary cases through training. Han-seung Nam The administrative division sup-plemented the existing performance appraisal system this year. We have newly applied MBO (management by objectives) that manages performance appraisal based on the target achievement rate. With the intro-duction of MBO, organization leaders are required to reach an agreement with each individual employee regarding their target setting through communication, and lead them to achieve their targets. We expect that leaders will demonstrate their leadership and will be trained about target management in the process. Jin-yeol Kim We’re seeing more and more automat-ed system with the emergence of the 4th industrial rev-olution. We need to emphasize humanistic education in this kind of situation. I believe we can support and develop a talented workforce who can realize conver-gence of technology, provided we provide them with strong fundamental knowledge and nurture the humanities.

Q As an outstanding lecturer and trainer in the com-pany, what do you think should be emphasized in

internal training?Jin-yeol Kim I think humanistic and common sense education should be increased. I really felt the necessi-ty of fundamental education while checking the educa-tional needs of the employees. We cannot make any significant technical achievements if we lack funda-mental common sense. I was able to understand the basic concept of paints by attending training in organic matters when I joined the company. This was because

basic training was included in the training curriculum. Based on my personal experience, I think fundamental course training is needed for newly hired employees. Just in time, the education center has also increased fundamental training as well as in-depth training. I believe those changes will form the basis of nurturing research and technical professionals equipped with basic capabilities and achieving technology conver-gence. Chang-rak Kang Mindset education is important in helping us understand our position and role in the organization. This is because the capability is different depending on the job position and title. New employ-ees and assistant managers are required to improve their self-development and target management capa-bilities, whereas deputy general managers who man-age human resources should have the capability of forming relationships, nurturing team members, and establishing communication. In other words, the edu-cation direction should differ depending on the job position and title. As the enterprise is an organically-connected organization, efficiency will be increased when employees understand the overall business flow of the company.

Q Let’s wrap up the round-table talk by suggesting a proposal for KCC growth as a person in charge of

training.Min Jeung The company emphasizes horizontal communication by promoting an SCM link with a focus on the BM. All members need to share various busi-ness matters and change trends in line with the com-pany management strategy and operational instruc-tions of each business division to realize horizontal communication. The system should be reinforced to allow efficient horizontal communication. In addition, I’d like to discuss how to set and approach the direc-tion in the training area, to promote SCM link business by sharing information smoothly among business divi-sions. Han-seung Nam I’d like to propose a method of identifying training contents by evolving field training needs, which have been checked by the person in charge of training, into an active form such as an inter-view with the “focus group” that is performing key business in each business division. What about imple-menting new training needs at the workshop or during

the occasional training course that has been identified during an interview with the focus group, based on the annual training plan of the education center? This would certainly help in nurturing job experts who will further improve business competitiveness. Chang-rak Kang Educational objectives should be imprinted as we’re soaked through by the drizzling rain. There should be clear educational objectives that can lead all members to the same direction, and a strategy should be set up regarding how to achieve those goals. All of us, lecturers and persons in charge of training, will play our role in sharing and diffusing the direction of KCC training with a strong sense of duty.Sang-tak Lee Everyone can view the lecturing mate-rials via the educational portal that HRD Institute established. We tend to have a new resolution and commitment when we receive training. However, our resolution weakens over time. please fully utilize quali-ty training contents for new employee OJT or leader-ship training at each business division.

Shop for the Latest Interior with HomeCC Interior PackagesKCC’s interior brand “HomeCC Interior” renewed three new packages. KCC renewed the packages by applying the latest interior design to its three existing concepts - Organic, Soft and Trendy. Let’s meet HomeCC Interior’s packages that customers can select according to their preferences.

The keywords are Calm & Warm. This concept consists of a calm and comfortable space. It applied mate-rials with emphasized textures while maintaining the basic color with a natural brown tone. The light nat-ural style makes for a comfortable space that can satisfy people of all ages by changing the space to look younger. As the leather used for space creation is matched with a product that emphasizes wooden and leather patterns, the space looks stable and harmonious.

Organic Trendy The keywords are Mono & Chic. The black, gray, and matte surface texture has created a modern style. Placing the interior points with rich pattern elements in a sensible way have helped to highlight the refined image. This is a refined style based on a chic, bright and warm mono-tone harmony.

Soft The bright and beautiful color match stands out. The modern and occasionally decorative elements have come together to create a charming and lovely space. The keywords are Classy & Delicate to emphasize a neat and refined feeling. The color match with a low chroma designed a beautiful and stable space, and the fabric and furniture with a bright wood tone are matched to add a bright and light sensation to the feeling of softness, thereby finding an equilibrium.

Store in Incheon The largest Interior Shopping Center in KoreaThe HomeCC Interior Store in Incheon, which was opened in June 2010, is the largest interior shopping center in Korea. It provides a one-stop shopping expe-rience from product sales to counseling and construc-tion. The area of the HomeCC Interior Store in Incheon is about 10,000㎡. It displays and sells construction materials and over 20,000 interior products. It has a great variety of sections, including kitchen and living room furniture, curtains, bedding, hardware, tiles, lighting, pet products and horticulture products. Among them, the largest and only wood-cutting and hardware sections in Korea is attracting particular attention. The wood exhibition has various types and specifications of local and imported wood, and the desired shapes and patterns are cut on the shop floor. In the woodworking room on the first floor, lectures are given. You can buy materials and receive education in a single location. Basic hardware necessary for mak-ing furniture, such as handles, rails and clamps, and parts necessary for making kitchen sinks and ward-robes can be found in the hardware section. If you cut wood and buy hardware in the store, you just need to assemble them at home.Another advantage of this store is the fixed-price sys-tem. As local material suppliers and hardware stores do not operate a fixed-price system, their prices are not fixed in most cases, but the HomeCC Interior Store in Incheon not only has fixed prices for all products, but also transparently opens construction costs.

Renewal Opens for Increased Customer Convenience The HomeCC Interior Store in Incheon recently had a facelift, and is now open to customers. The most note-worthy of this renewal is the extensive transformation of the showroom, which has been redesigned and moved for the three types of packages, i.e. the Organic, Soft and Trendy packages, from the second floor to the center of the first floor. The show room to which the latest design trends were applied consists of various residential spaces, e.g. the foyer, the living room, the kitchen, the master bedroom, the study and the bath-room. Customers can get information on the interior concepts they want from the three-package showroom, and see the materials used for each space and the con-struction cost right on the spot. When the showroom was relocated to the first floor, the spaces for materials were also expanded and relo-cated. As the windows, flooring materials, tiles and water faucets used for each package are placed around the showroom, it’s now possible to check the informa-tion on the interior in a single trip. That means cus-tomers can now save time and enjoy more efficient shopping. The paint section was relocated to the front of the moving walk which is frequently used by visitors. KCC paints and imported paints are sold here. The paint section shows you the basic coloring method, and recommends the tools necessary for each DIY(Do It Yourself) job. In particular, it is possible to mix paints on the spot. As this renewal makes it possible to see the mixing of colors, customers are now more interested in paints. These changes are leading to sales.

Q. What was the purpose of this renewal? A. The primary purpose of the renewal was to generate sales immediately after customers look around the show room and product sections. That’s why we placed the showroom in the most visible location, and relocated the materials shops around the showroom.

Q. I wonder how customers are reacting to the renewal.A. Their response to the showroom is overwhelmingly enthusiastic. In particular, an increasing number of customers look around the showroom, and ask about the living room wallpaper and bathroom tiles, or purchase them right away. They also show a great interest in the windows/doors section and the paint section. Above all, as the shopping traffic has become streamlined, they say shopping has become more convenient.

Q. Please tell us about your store management plan. A. Distribution stores must continuously change in keeping with market trends and customer needs. It can immediately lead to sales. Sooner than later, we will renovate the second floor, and make a natural connection between the first and second floor. We will expand the range of amenities we provide so that customers can stay for longer in greater comfort. We are planning to continuously change while continuing to monitor the customer response.

To the right of the entrance on the first floor, a new windows/doors section was installed. This section not only displays actual inner gates, room doors and win-dows, but also discloses the cost of replacing windows per unit area in nearby apartments. Customers can receive counseling service in a comfortable atmo-sphere, and receive advice on the green remodeling service, which is the national high-efficiency windows replacement project. The HomeCC Interior Store in Incheon further enhanced customer convenience through the first renewal since its opening in 2010. The transformation and growth of the largest interior shopping center in Korea is definitely having an impact in terms of increasing the level of customer satisfaction.

With PartnerThe Joy of Learning

Changdae Interior has entered into a partnership with HomeCC Interior as part of the expansion of its business territory. As a HomeCC Interior partner, the transparent estimates and high-quality construction materials installation service it provides have won customer trust. Let’s look at Changdae Interior as it seeks to maximize its competitiveness by means of precision construction.

Changdae Interior was opened last July. Gi-jae Son, who used to work as an interi-or expert, learned about HomeCC Interi-or. The more he learned, the more he wanted to become a HomeCC Interior

partner. He was convinced that the quality of the mate-rials and brand awareness would appeal to customers. “Customers have a high level of trust in HomeCC Inte-rior, which provides a one-stop service ranging from counseling and construction through to after-sales ser-vice. More than anything else, they are very satisfied with the transparent estimation process. As HomeCC Interior can offer detailed specifications and prices via a 13-page standard estimate sheet, they totally trust the estimate.”“Design & Skill” is printed on the business card of Mr. Son. HomeCC Interior is providing a vital boost to Chang-dae Interior as its strategy pivots to construction and design.“I believe the first step of interior is design. It is impor-tant to achieve design that meets customer needs. The renewal of HomeCC Interior design has impressed me greatly. It did a good job in reflecting customer needs and trends, and has actually widened the range of choices by reinforcing tiles and lighting products. The keywords, which made it possible to compare the products at a glance, have really facilitated customer counseling.”Another management keyword he emphasizes is preci-sion construction. He collaborates with experts spe-cializing in each process, and visits the site whenever each process is completed to check the finish to main-tain rigorous standards. He works hard to ensure pre-cision construction. He is trying to enhance the quality of construction by thoroughly supervising every part and element. “Constantly managing and taking responsibility till the end.” Mr. Son is reassured by the partnership with HomeCC Interior. The headquarters of other brands tend to step aside once the contract is signed with the customer, whereas KCC supports total management from construction to after-sales service. Jae-woong Jang, assistant manager of HomeCC Interior Service Team takes a belt-and-braces approach when it comes to construction support to enhance the competitive-ness of partners.“I visit the site frequently to improve construction quality, check on progress, look at technology and quality from an outsider’s viewpoint, and identify

potential defects and things that need to be improved. I am constantly listening to the customer’s opinion until construction is completed, and I share information on any improvements so that appropriate measures are taken immediately. Customers cannot but be highly satisfied as they are ‘doubly managed’ by the head-quarters and partner alike.”The total management and support system of HomeCC Interior Service Team provides a clear guideline for Mr. Son.“I’m greatly reassured by the way that HomeCC Interi-or Service Team provides clear solutions through con-struction support about things that need to be improved and supplemented. Though there may be minor differences in opinion during communication with customers, HomeCC Interior Service Team arbi-trates in any dispute so that there is no misunder-standing. This helps me greatly.”Partners strike sparks off each other. Hyeon-yong Eom, assistant manager of HomeCC Product Sales Department of Northern Gyeonggi Business Office regards Mr. Son as an excellent partner. He says Mr. Son puts his heart and soul into publicizing the values of HomeCC Interior.“As Mr. Son, who is closest to customers, has a discern-ing eye and sense of design, he does a good job in high-lighting HomeCC Interior’s strengths in design. I’m sure that he will attract more customers in the future. I will supply materials quickly so that he will have no difficulty with construction.”HomeCC Interior and Changdae Interior joined hands in the belief that there is no better promotion than sat-isfied customers. Promising to further solidify the partnership, Mr. Son emphasized his desire for the two firms to remain solid partners.“If I can show the simulation of the interior during cus-tomer counseling, I will be able to maximize the advan-tages of HomeCC Interior. Changdae Interior will also accumulate business experience step by step, and flourish even more. I hope that Changdae Interior will remain partners with HomeCC Interior for a long time.”

Silicone, which offers excellent physical properties like heat resistance and impact resistance, is an environmentally-friendly material with a variety of applications rang-ing from pacifiers to spacecraft. With the

rising prominence placed on environmentally-friendly materials today with the emergence of wearable devic-es, demand for silicone is increasing sharply. Silicone offers many advantages in terms of its physical proper-ties, but its use in wearable devices has so far been restricted by its static electricity and stickiness, which lead dust and foreign objects to stick to it that cannot be easily removed. KCC’s new silicone paint solves these problems. Silicone and paints are products from different fields. As they differ from each other in terms of their raw materials, technologies, application methods and research environment, the meeting of the two had been thought to be impossible. However, KCC, which produces both silicone and paints, dared to combine silicone and the paint technology. Samsung Electronics, which was experiencing difficul-ties due to the stickiness of silicone while carrying out a smart watch development project, asked KCC for a solu-tion, and that’s when KCC began to work on it in ear-nest. Samsung Electronics asked KCC for a solution to a pressing business need because KCC could offer both the silicone technology and the paint technology, and is

Q. What is the future silicone R&D plan? A. It is forecast that environmentally-friendly silicone materials will be applied to a greater variety of fields. Accordingly, we will seek to continuously improve the materials and textures, and expand our product lineup. KCC is planning to introduce a product with a texture that feels almost like the skin, reflecting the dominant consumer trend for wearable technology that offers comfort and a premium feel.

Q. What efforts will you make for technological development? A. The key to silicone paints is how well we can combine silicone technology and paint technology. So, the collaboration between departments is more important than anything else. The Silicone Business Division and the Mobile Paint Business Division will hold regular forums starting this year. Experts from their respective fields will examine the current issues facing the paint market at the forum, and decide which way they should be moving and preempt the blue ocean.

Convergence of Silicone and Paint Technology

Silicone paint

Silicone technology and paint technology, which come from two completely different fields, have been successfully combined to give birth to a new product. The Silicone Business Division and the Mobile coating Business Division pooled their respective technologies and know-how to develop an innovative new product: the “silicone paint” that remedied the weaknesses of silicone, i.e. stat-ic electricity and stickiness.

registered as a Samsung mobile vendor. To be regis-tered as a Samsung mobile vendor, you must have clean rooms in the factory, have factories in China and Hanoi, and offer a TSD technical support center in Gumi. As KCC met all the basic requirements, it passed the property test in the first round of procurement, while all other companies failed. Last June, KCC developed the “coating for silicone bands,” which combine sili-cone technology and the paint technology, and has since exclusively supplied them to Samsung Electron-ics. The coating for the Silicone Band is currently applied to Samsung Electronics’ smart watch “Gear S3” (Band), the Bluetooth earphone “IconX” (Ear Cap), and the smartphone protective case. Samsung Elec-tronics solved the problems of stickiness and skin allergy by applying KCC’s silicone paints to its prod-ucts. As it adheres to the skin softly and offers a good wearing sensation, consumer satisfaction has increased. KCC’s development of silicone mobile is largely attrib-utable to the close collaboration between the Silicone Business Division and the Mobile Paint Business Divi-sion. Demand for silicone materials is increasing rapidly in advanced countries, and materials are quickly chang-ing in the mobile market as well. KCC is planning to secure silicone coating technologies that can be applied to various products, and enhance the technological sta-tus of KCC in the fields of paints and materials.

The Arctic is a place with no owner, so any-one can take its resources if they want. Likewise, the glacier on which Dooly came to us is a common resource. It’s because no one could claim it as theirs

that Dooly was able to come all the way to Seoul with-out paying any money. However, if there are more and more people using glaciers for free like Dooly, the gla-ciers in the Arctic will soon disappear. Tuna and cutlass fish are similar resources to glaciers. Any fisherman is entitled to catch them, but if they do so with abandon, both species will disappear from the sea. The same goes for groundwater. Anyone can use groundwater, but over using it will eventually result in its depletion. We call the phenomenon of resource depletion caused by their unrestrained use “the trage-dy of the commons.”This concept first surfaced when biologist Garret Har-din published an essay on the subject in the magazine Science. He wrote the following: “There is a large pas-ture in the middle of a village. Each herdsman tries to keep as many cattle as possible on the pasture, because all the gains from raising the cattle will be their own. All of them competitively released their cattle into the pasture. The pasture quickly started to disappear. The pasture became desolate in the end, and no one in the village could raise cattle anymore.”Aristotle once said, “What is common to the greatest number gets the least amount of care. Men pay most attention to what is their own and care less for what is common.” Privatization is a good way to avoid the tragedy of the commons: it turns common property resources into private property. Once people start to think of something as their own, they become careful about using it. Likewise, a simple way to protect the ocean is to create more exclusive economic zones (EEZ). As soon as people recognize the ocean as their own, each country will make greater efforts to conserve the marine environment and fish stocks.Another way is to impose taxes or fines. A good exam-ple is the Namsan Tunnel’s congestion toll, which the city of Seoul has been imposing for 20 years. Everyone loves to use free tunnels, but once these tunnels start charging tolls, people refrain from using them. Coop-eration between communal entities can be a good way

to prevent the tragedy of the commons. For instance, to make different countries jointly manage the Arctic, the Arctic Council was set up and the Antarctic have been governed by the Antarctic Treaty. In this way, there should be no occasion on which a country arbi-trarily develops the Arctic or the Antarctic for resourc-es because that country will constantly be kept in check by its surrounding countries. But, there is one thing we must be careful about: the tragedy of privatization. Excessive privatization of common resources creates problems. Many common resources are essential: these include water, electricity, and transportation infra structure. If a company or an individual has exclusive rights to such resources, the damage that can be caused to their users will be beyond imagination. The root cause of the tragedy of the commons and the tragedy of privatization is human greed. The desire to have more obstructs efficient resource distribution. Excessive greed will eventually lead to the collapse of capitalism.

To acquire the ability to read the economy, you must first get familiar with the economy. KCC’s house organ <KCC> offers you common economic knowledge each month. It covers various areas, including film, literature, and popular culture, so that you can learn about the economy with fun and ease.

Cartoon <The Little Dinosaur, Dooly> Created in 1983 by the Korean cartoonist Su-jeong Kim, “The Little Dinosaur, Dooly”was first serialized in the Korean comic magazine “Treasure Island” and then adapted into a TV animation series. The main characters of the cartoon include Dooly himself, the homeowner Gil-

dong Go, Go’s nephew Heedong, the mischievous duo Douner and Ddochi, and the aspiring musician and neighbor Michol. “The Little Dinosaur, Dooly” is a work that provides exciting adventures as well as laughter and many touching moments.

How did Dooly Travel for Free?

The Tragedy of the Commons Found in “The Little Dinosaur, Dooly”

Dooly the little dinosaur, who was trapped in a glacier, drifts down to the Han River as the glacier melts. You could say, then, that Dooly actually saved on transportation costs thanks to the glacier. And this is because glaciers are a common resource with no owner, which means there is no one to charge you for transportation. What is the reason that a tragedy befell common land which anyone could use?

Correcting KonglishThe Joy of Learning

By Soo-kyung Lee (AllThatEnglish.com)

“Let’s Learn Local English!”

This column will look at some of the pitfalls that Koreans tend to fall into when speaking English at the workplace. Let’s speak English the right way!

1) muffler (X) → scarf (O)In the spring, people wear thick scarves on their way to work to keep them warm. Many Koreans refer these scarves as “mufflers”, but native speakers will think you are talking about part of a car. Call them simply “scarves” instead.» It’s -10 degrees outside today, so I wore this scarf to work.

2) padding (X) → winter jacket, down jacket, padded jacket, puffer jacket (O)Another popular winter clothing item is an insulated jacket to keep us warm. Koreans refer to these as “padding”, but this is another common Konglish mistake. Aside from simply call-ing them “winter jackets”, you can call them “down jackets”, “padded jackets” or “puffer jackets”.» That’s a nice down jacket. Where did you get it?

3) walker (X) → work boots / safety boots (O)Walker boots are another popular fashion item in Korea, but native speakers of English will not understand what you mean when you call them “walkers”. Instead, you should call them “work boots” or “safety boots”.» I like those work boots.

4) Burberry (바바리) (X) → trench coat (O)The Burberry brand has become synonymous with its trade-mark trench coat, and a lot of Koreans now refer to a trench coat as a “Burberry coat”. However, English speakers refer to this fashion item as “trench coat”.» I want to buy this trench coat to wear to work.

These are some expres-sions that we use day-to-day related to fash-ion that are not used by native speakers of English.

Business fashion

1) apart (아파트) (X) → apartment(building) (O)Urban areas in Korea are filled with apartment buildings, so we should know the proper English expression by which to refer to them. An apartment is a single unit of a larger build-ing, while “apartment building” is the term used to refer to the whole structure. » I live in an apartment building. » My apartment has 2 bedrooms.

2) Fighting! (X) → Go _____! / Come on!! / Let’s go! (O)“Fighting!” is a very commonly used Konglish expression found in everyday conversations among Koreans. Even though it uses an English word, this is not what English speakers say to cheer people on. Try saying “Go (person/team)!” “Come on!”, or “Let’s go!”» GoSeok-Jun! You’re almost there!» Come on, Dae-Han! You can do it!

3) Masscomm (매스컴) (X) → mass media (O))Masscomm is short for “mass communication”, which refers to exchange and imparting of information on a large scale. However, Koreans commonly use this word to refer to “mass media”, such as TV, newspapers, radio, and magazines. These media should be called “mass media” not “masscomm”.» Do you think we rely on the mass media for information too much?

4) cut line (X) → cut-off (point) (O)When you say that the cut line is at 50 people, a native speak-er may not understand what you mean; it is not accurate English. Instead of saying “cut line”, call it the “cut-off” or “cut-off point”. » What is the cut-off?» The cut-off point is set at 70%.

These are some expres-sions that we use everyday situations that will confuse native speak-ers of English.

everyday expressions

1) One shot! (X) →Bottoms up! (O)When you’re doing shots and drinking the entire contents of your glass, you should say “Bottoms up!”» Here’s to our successful partnership! Bottoms up!

2) service (X) →(be) on the house / compliments of the house (O)The word “service” is used by Koreans when offering something for free to customers, but a native speaker of English may not understand what you mean. Instead, say that what you are offer-ing it “on the house” or with the “compliments of the house”. » This drink is on the house. » Here you go. Compliments of the house.

3) cider (X) →Sprite or 7-Up (both brand names) (O)Cider refers to an alcoholic beverage made from fermented apple juice. If you want to ask for a soft drink, you need to order a Sprite or a 7-Up, depending on which brand they carry.» Can I have Sprite?

4) prim (in coffee) (X) →cream (O)Derived from the brand name Prima, we mistakenly refer to “cream” as “prim”, but an English speaker will not know what a prim is.» Two creams and one sugar in my coffee, please.

If you use these expressions at a restaurant, native English speakers may not under-stand what you mean!

In a business meeting, a decent appearance can make all the difference when it comes to inspir-ing trust in others. Your chance for business success will increase if you can come across with a tidy image, a sensible way of speaking and have good manners. Wearing an attire that’s suit-able for the TPO (Time, Place and Occasion) is one of the key factors to consider. Here are some requirements for decent businesspeople. It might sound like a cliche, but the basics are always important.

Requirements for Decent Businesspeople

Global Business EtiquetteThe Joy of Learning

In a business meeting, which is prone to be too formal, a little small talk can help soften the atmosphere. That’s why many people in a meeting prefer doing a little small talk before getting down to business. Nevertheless, avoid asking too private questions that could make someone uncomfortable, such as remarking about their body size, marital status or house rent. Avoid asking such questions to domestic business partners as well. This is simply not good manners. Just one such question could destroy much-needed trust and good feeling. Also, avoid greeting others by saying, “Have you eaten?” This kind of greeting works only among Koreans. Many foreigners will wonder why you are asking such a thing. In a drinking party, avoid offering a drink in your glass. This is thought to be unhygienic.

“Dress code red tie on white shirt.”

A dress code is a kind of promise

It is rude to snatch at another’s clothes

When it comes to the choosing the right attire and appearance for a business meeting, tidiness is key. If you want to inspire trust in others, avoid fancy attire and makeup. If you are a man, choose a suit in a quiet color, such as navy or gray. Choosing the right size for you rather than focusing on design will help you come across as clean and tidy. It’s good manners to wear a tie if you attend an important meeting. You should show that you have the good sense to choose a suitable color for the meeting. Your hairstyle also determines your first impression. Make sure the hair at the back of your head doesn’t touch the collar of your shirt. Avoid wearing white socks. In many countries, people wear white socks when they play sport. This means that white socks are not appropriate attire for a business meeting. If you are a woman, put on makeup using calm tones. For a meeting, it’s good to choose a bright and warm-colored suit. For an academic meeting, such as a seminar, choose a dark toned suit.

“Did you get married?”

“ Oh my god....”

Tidy rather than fancy

A dress code is a kind of promise kept by participants to an event. The dress code implies “come along for the event” and helps to elevate a sense of belong-ing. So, if you want to make your business event successful, specify a dress code in the invitation. “Black Tie” means a tuxedo and “Director’s Suit” means a suit, shirt and tie. Participants should follow the dress code, but if you other-wise can’t follow the dress code, it’s good manners to ask for the host’s under-standing and discuss what to wear in advance. In a business meeting or semi-nar, it’s good to wear a simple and basic style suit. If you attend a casual event, choose business casual clothes. “Business casual” means a jacket and pants matched in different colors and textures. Simply, it’s dandy-style attire. But, even a “casual” dress code does not allow you to wear jeans. Unless specified in the invitation, avoid wearing jeans. That is one type of attire you should always avoid.

Avoid asking private questions

You should be careful in your wording and behavior, especially when you meet foreign business partners. This is because cultural differences could cause a misunderstanding. Look at the other’s eyes when you talk. Koreans tend to avoid looking at the eyes of the other during conversation as they feel uncom-fortable doing so. But if you don’t keep eye contact during conversation, the person you are talking to might think you are telling a lie. Another frequent mistake made by Koreans is to snatch at another’s clothes. It is natural among Koreans to pull the end of another’s clothes to draw their attention, but in Western countries this is regarded as rude. If you want to catch another’s attention, call their name or pause from speaking, then resume.

KCC GeographyThe Joy of Learning

By Su-hyeon Kim(reporter for <Tour De Monde>)

India today is no longer a country that gets the world’s attention for its long history and great population only. Global property consulting firm Jones Lang LaSalle recently said that India’s IT technology center, Bengaluru,

ranked first in the “2017 Urban Dynamics Index,” and Goldman Sachs predicted that India would rise to become the world’s third-most powerful economic powerhouse by 2030. The source of the strength of India, a country emerging as a new power in the inter-national community, lies in its diverse cultures. India has as many as 22 officially recognized official lan-guages, and if we take into account its various dialects and minority languages, over 2,000 languages are cur-rently used throughout India. People from a truly wide variety of races live on India’s vast lands, and Hindu-ism, followed by the majority population, emphasizes inclusiveness and diversity. India is a place where the unique cultures of numerous ethnic groups coexist. And this is why India cannot be described in a single word or sentence.Indian films are an important symbol of India as a multicultural country. India’s film industry has grown

since D.G. Phalke unveiled a 50-minute silent film in 1913. In India, thanks to cheap movie tickets and over 10,000 movie theaters of various sizes, a wide range of people spend their free time watching movies in the-aters. India annually sells 4 billion movie tickets and more than 1,000 film production companies denote the status of the film industry in the country.People commonly use the word “Bollywood” to refer to Indian cinema. However, to be exact, Bollywood is only a part of the larger Indian film industry, where more than 1,000 films are released each year. Bolly-wood is a compound word of Bombay — an old name for Mumbai — and Hollywood, and it is used to refer to films made in Mumbai in the Hindi language. Bolly-wood is the most well-known Indian film industry because it has a large domestic market as well as many avenues of entry into foreign markets. However, Tolly-wood films, which are made in the Telugu language, and Kollywood films, which are made in the Tamil lan-guage, are also popular in India. In addition, film styles vary depending on the language. For instance, Bolly-wood produces many blockbuster films that can rival those made in Hollywood, while Tollywood is famous for its arthouse films that are primarily focused on realism. It is rare for linguistic and cultural diversity to be man-ifest in a single country or a single industry in such an evident manner. Delving deeper, you can also find diversity in a single work. Indians call their movies “masala movies.” Masala means a spice in Hindi, and just as many different kinds of spice are added to a sin-gle Indian dish, a masala movie contains a variety of genres and emotions within it. With a single masala movie usually running for about three hours, the audi-ence can experience a variety of genres, including melodrama, period drama, comedy, and action. In addition, it is a characteristic feature of a masala movie that the characters sing and dance from time to time during the movie to raise the mood. In addition, the upbeat pieces of music suddenly played in the middle of masala movies make up more than half of the Indian music market, and popular actors enter the lives of Indian people thanks to the way they branch out beyond cinema into various other media. There is no doubt that cinema is the most influential entertain-ment form in today’s India and that it is a medium that

perfectly embodies India’s longstanding diversity.Indian society has maintained a strict hierarchy throughout its long history. The traces of India’s caste system are still present, but since the start of the 21st century, the walls of its class society — social classes passed down from ancient times and occupational dis-tinctions — have gradually collapsed. The country’s IT industry and digital craze are providing opportunities for diverse cultural exchanges to people from all works of life.In India, IT is a major industry that’s as crucial as its film industry. Last year, India’s IT industry accounted for 10% of India’s GDP, with its growth rate three times higher than the global average. Thanks to the immense popularity of IT jobs among young people in India, the entrance exam for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) attracts a massive number of applicants each year. India’s IT industry has been growing thanks to active government support. Bengaluru and Hyderabad have long since established themselves as international digital cities, and Kochi in Kerala is pioneering new areas in line with these trends, centered on its start-up village. India is now absorbing newness deeply and broadly through its high level of technical competence and its diverse culture.

Established in September, 2006 at the SIPCOT Industrial Complex in Chennai, the largest city in southern India, KCC Paint (India) Pvt. Ltd. produces a variety of paint products including automotive OEM, industrial, heavy duty, PCM and architectural paints. KCC Paint (India) Pvt. Ltd. complies with the environmental impact assessment criteria as well as the air, water, and soil quality standards set by the central government of India and the Tamil Nadu state government. KCC Paint (India) Pvt. Ltd. produces eco-friendly products free of heavy metal, including automotive paints, PCM paints, and general industrial paints, and supplies them throughout India.

About 5,000 years ago, a new civilization was born along the Indus River. The land the civilization was built on — present-day India — is now inhabited by 1.3 billion people in diversity of races, religions, languages and cultures. From its beginning to the present day, India has constantly been driven by multiculturalism. India's film and IT industries, which are deeply connected to the country's multiculturalism, is at the heart of the force that will lead India's future.

One question which civil engineers are often asked is how hard must the ground be to support huge high-rise buildings? What kind of technology does the ground hide within it? We can find the answers to these

questions in Pile Business Division. Since its foundation 1972, it has been producing rein-forced concrete posts and telephone poles. Its main prod-uct since 1997 has been PHC(Pretensioned spun High strength Concrete) piles. PHC piles are a high-strength concrete post used for the foundation works of massive structures. They are the core material that is driven into the ground to increase the bearing capacity of buildings to thus secure stability. As the PHC pile offers high strength, flexural resistance, and excellent impact resis-tance, it can be designed economically and is used in vari-ous construction sites. In particular it is essential to secure the stability of soft ground like reclaimed land and heavy structures. Pile Business Division’s PHC pile pro-duction technology is at the center of securing the stabili-ty of the foundation, the most basic to civil engineering and construction sites. In Pile plant, located in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, you can find row upon row of magnificent PHC piles, soon to be shipped. These 5~15m-long PHC piles support not only the structures, but also our lives in them. This is the natural meeting place for the philosophy of KAC in pursuing a bet-

ter life through the safety glass of automobiles and the value of Pile Business Division. A cylindrical concrete structure may look simple at first glance, but it contains a sophisticated technology. Pile Busi-ness Division has achieved the highest level of industry by mixing new materials and improving designs through con-stant R&D, and superior price competitiveness. “Among the 30 factories of 20 domestic pile makers, it has the highest productivity per hour. We acquired a composition patent for a new method of mixing type 1 and type 3cement with slag(a byproduct of a steel mill). We increased productivity by 10~20%. It was environ-ment-friendly in terms of resource recycling too. In addi-tion, we have seven patents related to the quality of piles, e.g. pile connection and reinforcement of durability, and registered two utility models which improved the work-ing environment and the production method.”Given the increasing importance of structure safety fol-lowing the introduction of seismic design, there are increasingly stringent requirements being placed on pile quality. Accordingly, Pile Business Division is leading the industry through continuous innovation in all aspects ranging from product quality, line productivity and work-ing environment. If its success in concrete piles is spur-ring its manufacturing division, then landscaping is lead-ing the construction division. Acquiring the first landscaping industrial project license,

the civil engineering project license, and the facility main-tenance project license, Pile Business Division received the grand prize in landscaping at “Korea Construction and Civil Engineering Fair 2006” in recognition of its construction of the “Artificial Waterfall at the Anyang Amusement Park Site.” Sun-mok Kwon, the head of Pile Business Division never forgets to mention his employees as the driving force behind change and innovation. The company takes great pride in the true harmony between labor and management. “It’s simple. We just think of them as a family. We empha-size safety on site as often as possible, and actively encourage quality circle activities to remove risk factors in the field. It is essential to visit sites and see and hear what’s going on in the field. When we understand each other, we can enjoy our work.”The Pile Business Division is more than willing to open its mind to a new family member KAC. When you take the proven operating know-how of Pile Business Division and combine it with the equipment automation, computing and logistics system of KAC, the result will surely be a growth engine more powerful than ever seen before. Turning the possibilities of business diversification and market expansion into favorable factors is an important task in all this. To this end, we are trying to find a way to grow together while sharing each other’s values, rather than depending on any single company for growth.

“We will become the best in the pile industry.” I am glad that Pile Business Division and KAC of KCC Group became a family. The employees of Pile Business Division have been taking the lead in R&D and innovation with a commitment to create something out of nothing, and they have secured the best productivity and quality in Korea. I can tell you with pride that the family-like atmosphere, emphasizing unity and cooperation, is the representative culture of Pile Business Division. Through the merger with KAC, we will become the best in the pile industry by maximizing our strengths, and making up for any weaknesses. Furthermore, like the motto of KCC, we will try our best in the given circumstances to become ‘the best in the pile industry’ and thus become a reliable partner.

A Gambit to overcome Crisis and tear down the WallsThe construction period was 28 months in total. The construction site was inundated with challenges, issues and problems during this period. As there was already a variety of living infrastructure around the site, there were difficulties from the start. However, the field workers acted with supreme discretion. Hyeon-sik Kim of the Construction Division cannot forget how glad he was when he handled a complaint.“As existing roads passed through the site, we had to relocate many obstacles, such as city gas, waterworks, communication and electricity. We had many com-plaints on account of that. As the existing roads did not have sidewalks, they were dangerous. We made a detour to secure safety, and held a public hearing and talked a lot with residents. As a result, we were able to resolve disputes very well. When we handled the com-plaints and finished the framework construction, we felt really great and proud.” We had some critical moments too. Due to the short supply of equipment and machines in the construction industry last year, the construction was delayed. We weren’t able to use the tower crane for one month, and couldn’t use ready-mixed concrete at the right time either. But, employees stuck to the basics and, instead of waiting idly, they visited suppliers, explained the situation to them, and had the machines and equipment come to the site ear-lier than anticipated. By quickly responding to the situ-ation, we were able to finish the construction on time.

Accommodating both the Living Infrastructure and Life TrendsOne-stop residential complexes continue to gain popu-larity. As amenities like large discount stores and a movie theater are located near the houses, and there are various community facilities like sports facilities in the complex, it is possible to enjoy leisure and cultural activities and lifestyle conveniences. KCC E&C intro-duced Pyeongnae Hopyeong Station KCC Switzen, a one-stop residential complex reflecting recent life trends.Pyeongnae Hopyeong Station KCC Switzen, the first new apartment complex in six years supplied in Hopy-eong-dong, has 6 buildings with two underground lev-els and 20 stories, housing a total of 333 households. There is an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, private educational institutes, and amenities like a large store and a movie theater near the complex. The complex also has convenient transportation links. The Pyeongnae Hopyeong Station of the Gyeongchun Line is adjacent to the complex, and if you use the express bus, the Suseok-Hopyeong expressway or the beltway around Seoul, you can easily access Seoul and the Metropolitan area. Jeong-gyu Joo, the site manag-er, said that the complex is very popular among resi-dents as it has an outstanding residential environment supported by KCC E&C’s technology and know-how.“In addition to its excellent location, the complex has the facilities that residents prefer located inside the complex. In particular, the apartment complexes near the complex have parking lots on the ground, whereas all the parking lots are underground at Pyeongnae Hopyeong Station KCC Switzen. As there is no car on the ground, it is safe to walk about and for children to play there. Plus, as the parking lots have elevators in each building, it is much more convenient and com-fortable. The “Switzen Land,” a playground for chil-dren, and the “Switzen Healing Forest,” a place for relaxation in harmony with the surrounding nature, are a credit to the apartment design. The interior, which features KCC E&C’s special design and KCC’s high-quality finishing materials, contributed to raising the satisfaction of residents.”

Safety 1st!

Our attitude towards safety

Mini Interview

Site Manager Jeong-gyu Joo

I believe that the first step in preventing safety accidents is to check if there is any equipment or material left unattended at the site, and set it in

order. As we were faithful to the basics, i.e. ‘making sorting and straightening part of

our daily routine,’ we were able to make the site accident-free.

Administration Jeong-soo Kim

I prevented accidents by checking very small details that I may overlook one more time, and carefully inspecting everything.

Public Works Divison Young-chan Son

I made sure that the materials and equipment necessary for site safety management would be injected at the right time in the right way. The secret

to accident-free construction was to discuss additional measures to ensure safe work

with the Construction Division and the Safety Division.

Construction Division Il-hwan Song

I think of everyone on site as my family. The beginning of electrical safety is to check if there is any risk of electric shock and if there is any dark place every

day.

Construction Division Young-jae Jang

Considering the characteristics of apartment construction, I tried to work from the viewpoint of residents as much as possible. As I worked

believing that ‘it’s my own house,’ I was able to examine a lot of things from a wider

perspective.

Construction Division Gi-hyeon Lee

There are many risks at a construction site, e.g. people, equipment, materials and environment. I look around every corner of the site frequently to find and

remove any hidden risk factors.

For the flooring, we install molds in the slabs on the crossbeams, install rebars, and pump concrete over them. As most molds and rebars are connected together, the molds cannot be removed after the curing of the concrete. If the concrete develops cracks or a leakage, the molds will cover the concrete. If this happens, it’s difficult to know exactly where the crack or leakage is. At this construction site, when we did the flooring work for each floor of the underground parking lot, we used a method using removable deck plates. The removable deck plate is a product that allows the bottom steel sheet to be removed after the curing of the concrete by connecting the top structure and the bottom steel sheet serving as the mold. As we can see the cracks or leaks of the concrete with our own eyes, we can repair them easily. Also, we can use a finishing method according to the situation of the site. We can paint the concrete or coat it with a sound absorbing material.

Exquisite Harmony based on Conversation and Trust“Culture Day” is a conspicuous communication culture of this site. A cultural event on the Every last Wednes-day of each month, 15 employees get together to enjoy some cultural activities such as going to the movies, have a good time bowling, playing foot volleyball or baseball. Under the name of KCC E&C, they banded together and enhanced the sense of fellowship and intimacy. Doing so resulted in mutual trust and con-sideration for each other. Jeong-gyu Joo, the site man-ager, learned to trust the employees who solved big and small problems wisely.“We tried hard not to miss anything, i.e. safety, quality, construction, cost and environment. Everyone freely expressed their opinions and we successfully reached a winning compromise, while sufficiently considering each other’s position and role. Through efficient and productive communication, we were able to solve problems in a way that satisfied everyone.” The slogan of the site was “Stick to the basics.” If we stick to the basics, e.g. sorting and straightening at the

site, and quality specifications and construction meth-ods, we believed that corresponding safety and quality would follow. When it comes to safety management, we held the Tool Box Meetings (TBM) twice a day, i.e. in the morning and in the afternoon. We shared all the variables at the site with individual workers, and installed CCTVs on site to minimize any safety blind spots. As a result, there were no accidents or disasters recorded at the site. Young-chan Son of the Public Works Division said that he stayed vigilant till the end. “Customers visited the site, said ‘You did an excellent job.’ When they said ‘KCC E&C has done a great job’ ‘The apartment looks great’ ‘The quality and finish look awesome,’ we felt such a great sense of responsibility and pride. Looking back, I am so relieved and satisfied that we were able to complete the construction without any trouble.”The workers on site were able to ultimately produce a positive outcome, despite many complications along the way. As we worked hard to satisfy the customers the best way we could, KCC E&C created another mas-terpiece.

A new advertisement for KCC windows and doors and flooring materials has been broadcast on TV for con-sumers since March 18. The advertising content conveys the brand’s charm with a story about the family that consumers can empathize with in their daily life, without using a celebrity or magnificent 3D technology.

People living away from their parents should have the same mind. They are concerned about their parents who might feel cold during a cold snap, but they are sorry that they cannot take care of them in person. Windows and doors advertising depict the concerns of a son who wor-ries about his parents. The son chooses KCC windows and doors for his parents who seem to suffer from the cold in winter. Then, the mother says “My son!” in front of the windows and doors in a big smile. This TV com-mercial reminds consumers of their mothers.

No one can forget the moment when we saw our crawl-ing baby take the first step. However, we also remember that we used to shout “Don’t run” owing to our concern about noise between floors in apartment houses when our child started to toddle about and run. This TV com-mercial begins with a monologue of a mother who is sorry about shouting whenever her child runs on the floor. Then, the commercial ends with a child romping around the floor after her mother replaced flooring materials out of love for the child.
