Clinician Bios

Tim Seelig is conductor, singer, teacher and motivational speaker. In addition to Artistic Director and Conductor of the Golden Gate Performing Arts and San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, he continues an extremely busy guest-conducting schedule throughout the U.S. and across the globe. He is Conductor Emeritus of the Turtle Creek Chorale, which he conducted for 20 years. He was the founder of The Women’s Chorus of Dallas and Resounding Harmony. He served on the faculty of Southern Methodist University for 14 years. Dr. Seelig holds four degrees, including the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Texas and the Diploma from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. He has numerous books and DVDs on choral technique including best-sellers The Perfect Blend, and The Perfect Rehearsal. Other publications include The Perfect Choral Workbook, Quick Choral Fixes and The Music Within. In 2012, the new book and DVD, The Language of Music, will be released. Dr. Seelig’s early training was as a singer. He made

his European operatic debut at the Staatsoper in St. Gallen, Switzerland and his solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall. He has two solo recordings, Everything Possible and Two Worlds. He appeared as soloist in world premieres of composers including John Corigliano, Conrad Susa and Peter Schikele (P.D.Q. Bach). While conducting regularly at Carnegie Hall, including the world premier of James Eakin’s “Flowers on the Grave of War,” in 2012, Dr. Seelig also made his Lincoln Center conducting debut in 2011. He recently conducted the European Premier of SING FOR THE CURE at the Southbank Centre in London. He is also a frequent presenter and conductor at state and national American Choral Directors Association and Music Educators National Conference conventions. In 2013, Dr. Seelig will be conducting and presenting workshops in China and Australia. Known for his enthusiasm and sense of humor, Grammy Magazine says, “Dr. Seelig takes eclecticism to new heights.” Fanfare Magazine says he raises singers from “the ranks of amateur choir to one receiving wide recognition for excellent performances of appealing, fresh repertoire.” The New York Times calls Seelig an “expressive performer,” and the Fort Worth Star Telegram quips, “Seelig slices a thick cut of ham.” He is the proud grandfather of the amazing Clara Skye. Laura Farnell is an active choral composer, clinician, accompanist, and adjudicator who resides in Arlington, Texas. After graduating summa cum laude from Baylor University with her Bachelor of Music Education in Choral Music (with a piano emphasis), Laura taught elementary music for two years. She then taught for eight years at Boles Junior High in Arlington ISD, during which time the choir program earned numerous Texas UIL sweepstakes awards. She was honored by her schools with Teacher of the Year awards in 2000 and 2003, and in 2004 she received an Excellence in Education Award as the Arlington Independent School District's outstanding junior high teacher of the year. Laura enjoys working with middle school students and presently serves as an invited clinician for district, region, and state honor choirs across the country. She also presents workshops for choir directors at both district and state levels and has presented at music conferences in Illinois, Iowa, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin. A prolific composer, she especially enjoys writing and arranging music for choirs at the middle school level. She is represented by several music publishers with more than sixty compositions in publication. Laura is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, the Texas Music Adjudicators' Association, and The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. She and her husband, Russell, and their sons Ryan (5) and Will (1), attend First Presbyterian Church of Arlington where Russell serves as Minister of Music and Laura directs the children’s choirs.

Clinician Bios

Elaine Quilichini is recognized internationally for her exceptional musicianship, distinguished work and extraordinary gift for inspiring others. As a Master of Music (Kodály), she has served as a clinician, lecturer, adjudicator and guest conductor across Canada, the United States, Australia, Japan, Argentina, Brazil and the Canary Islands. In 1995, Ms. Quilichini founded the Calgary Girls Choir, and with her vision and passion has built it into one of the most celebrated choirs in the world. Ms. Quilichini conducted the University of Calgary Women’s Choir for over ten years and continues to lead an active music studio. A notable indication of Ms.Quilichini’s stature in the choral community is her successful choral series published by Alliance Music Publishing, Houston, Texas. She is also a recipient of the Alberta Choral Federation’s “con spirito” award for her contributions to the choral arts. Ms. Quilichini is on the faculty of the International Summer Academy of Choral Conducting and Music Pedagogy in Las Palmas, Canary Islands and is Artistic Director of the Nebraska Wesleyan University and the Wichita State University summer choral programs. She also

continues to serve at the New England Conservatory in Boston as conductor of their youth and children’s choral summer program. In 2010, Ms. Quilichini accepted invitations to conduct the Children's Honor Choirs at both the Eastern and North Central Division Conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, as well as the Virginia Organization of Kodály Educators (VOKE) Children’s Choir Festival in Fairfax in 2010 and 2011. Global Television recently recognized Ms. Quilichini as a “Woman of Vision,” an award that celebrates women whose passion, talent, and commitment is reflected in their achievements: a perfect fit for Ms. Quilichini’s contributions.

Jennifer M. Cannady, The Kansas Voice Center Jennifer M. Cannady, MA, CCC-SLP, received her Master‘s in speech-language pathology and is certified with the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association. At the Kansas Voice Center, Jennifer participates in patient evaluation and directs treatment for a variety of voice and swallowing disorders. She has been professionally trained in voice with an emphasis in opera and musical theater. As an experienced singer, Jennifer is active in a variety of performance mediums throughout the Kansas City area. Most recently, she served as an adjunct instructor for Rockhurst University’s Communicative Science and Disorders graduate program

Christy Elsner, Allegro Children’s Choirs Christy Elsner is an active clinician for children's, youth and treble choirs and enjoys giving workshops on innovative rehearsing and unusual teaching tools. In 2012, she will conduct the NWACDA, Wyoming All-State, and Missouri All-State Children's Honor Choirs. In 2011 she shared her choral passion with honor choirs in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana. Elsner is the 2012 recipient of the Kindest Kansas Citian Award and a 2008 recipient of the MENC Outstanding Middle Level Education. She is the current SWACDA Children's and Community Youth R&S Chair. She is the past recipient of the KCDA Outstanding Young Conductor Award. She received her music education degree from the University of Kansas and received the Marcus E. Hahn Award for Outstanding Senior in Music Education. Professional memberships include: MENC, Chorister's Guild, Chorus America, and ACDA. Elsner and her husband, Sean, stay busy with their three children: Chandler, Chase, and Carlee.

Dr. Michael Hanawalt, Wichita State University Michael Hanawalt is Assistant Professor of Choral Music at Wichita State University, where he conducts the Concert Chorale, the Women’s Ensemble, and teaches courses in conducting and choral literature. Prior to his appointment at Wichita State, Dr. Hanawalt served as Visiting Instructor in Music at St. Olaf College, where he conducted the Chapel Choir and the Viking Chorus. Dr. Hanawalt is a founding member of the professional male vocal ensemble Cantus, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During his eleven-year tenure with Cantus, he performed over 500 concerts throughout North America and Europe, participated in over 200 educational outreach events, and recorded eleven CDs. He also served for six years as Cantus’ Executive Director, overseeing its growth through organizational management, fundraising, and board development. An active performer, Dr. Hanawalt is the recipient of several awards, including first place at the Schubert Club Vocal Competition in Minneapolis, MN, first place at the Thursday Musical Vocal Competition in St. Paul, MN, and first place at Minnesota’s division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Vocal Competition in Collegeville, MN. In 2011, Mr. Hanawalt sang the role of the Evangelist in J. S. Bach’s Weinachts-Oratorium with the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir. Dr. Hanawalt’s arrangement of “Amazing Grace” was premiered by the Michigan State University Women’s Chamber Ensemble at the National Convention of the American Choral Director’s Association in 2009. His arrangement of “Auld Lang Syne,” co-arranged with his wife, Justine Sasanfar, was premiered by the Michigan State University Women’s Glee Club in November of 2008. Both arrangements are published by Boosey & Hawkes. His arrangement of “Loch Lomond” is featured on Cantus’ CD Let Your Voice Be Heard and is published by the Niel A. Kjos Music Company. Dr. Hanawalt holds a B.M. in Vocal Performance from St. Olaf College, an M.M. in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from The Florida State University.

Kevin McBeth, Manchester United Methodist Church/St. Louis Symphony Kevin McBeth is Associate Director of the St. Louis Symphony and Director of Music at Manchester United Methodist Church in suburban St. Louis. He serves as full-time administrator for the Music Ministry, which includes 18 choral and handbell ensembles, involving nearly 500 children, youth and adults. Kevin has also recently served as Adjunct Professor in Choral Music at Webster University. Previous appointments include Assistant Conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Chorus and Music Director of the St. Louis Metro Singers. His 30-year career in church music has included appointments in churches in Houston, Texas and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. McBeth is a graduate of Houston Baptist University, and has done graduate studies in Choral Conducting at the University of Houston. In addition to being a published composer and author, he was also choral music editor for Abingdon Press. McBeth has served on the board of the Iowa Choral Directors Association, the Missouri Choral Directors Association, and the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers. He was also the Repertoire and Standards Chair for the Southwest Division of the American Choral Directors Association. Influential teachers in conducting have been David Wehr, Robert Linder and John Yarrington. McBeth has recently conducted concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Choirs under his direction have also performed at regional and national gatherings for choral and handbell music, including both state and division ACDA conventions, and at the American International Choral Festival. In the fall of 2002, the National Religious Music Week Alliance named him as one of the top ten Church Music Directors in the country. His orchestral conducting credits include performances with the Houston Civic Symphony, the New England Symphonic Ensemble and with members of the St. Louis Symphony in a concert featuring Garrison Keillor. McBeth is the proud father of two talented sons, Cameron and Austin.

Dr. Joshua Oppenheim, Kansas State University Joshua Oppenheim is Co-Director of Choral Studies at Kansas State University. Prior to that, he was on faculty at the Crane School of Music in New York. He received his B.M. from Western Michigan University, his M.M. at the University of Mississippi, and his D.M.A. in Choral Conducting at the University of North Texas. He directs Concert Choir, Collegiate Chorale, Men's Choir, and In•A•Chord. He teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting and choral rehearsal techniques. His choirs have performed by invitation at the New York State School Music Association Conference (2007), the Kansas Music Educators Association Conference (2009, 2012), the American Choral Directors Association Southwestern Conference, (2012), and the National Collegiate Choral Organization (2013) He has presented sessions at numerous ACDA conferences in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, as well as the Western and Southwestern ACDA conferences.

John Stafford II, Kansas City Kansas Community College John Stafford II is currently the Director of Choral Music Activities at Kansas City Kansas Community College. He was previously appointed at Millikin Univiersity and Eastern Illinois University teaching music composition, theory and orchestration. His choral and chamber music has been performed throughout North America and Europe. The University of Oregon's Waging Peace Through Singing, an international competition for choral music on the theme of peace, has recognized his work. He has also received recognition from other organizations such as American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, the Society of Composers Inc. (both national and regional conferences), the National Federation of Music Clubs, Electronic Music Midwest, and Primavera En La Habana 2004 (Spring in Havana) International Electroacoustic Music Festival in Havana, Cuba. He was selected as a finalist for the IV Edition Pierre Schaeffer International Competition of Computer Music in Italy. In addition, members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New York New Music Ensemble, the Hradec Kralove Men's Chorus (Czech Republic), the Gregg Smith Singers, Chicago A cappella, the New York Treble Singers and the Anti-Social New Music Ensemble (New York City) had performed his music. His choral and vocal jazz music is published by The Roger Dean Publishing Company and Sound Music Publications. Stafford has degrees from Millikin University (B.M. in Music Business) and Bowling Green State University (M.M. in Composition) and is completing a D.M.A. in Choral Conducting and Literature at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Lee Reusner, MD, The Kansas Voice Center Lee A. Reussner, MD and Director of the Kansas Voice Center, has been practicing otolaryngology head and neck surgery since 1994. He did his undergraduate coursework here in Lawrence at the University of Kansas, graduating with distinction. He went on to medical school, also at the University of Kansas, where he received his doctorate degree. upon graduating from medical school, he completed a surgical internship and otolaryngology residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York. He aslo contributed to research related to parathyroid gland function from the University of Rochester and on cancer and diseases of the immune system from the University of Kansas. He has been board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and has been an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery since 1995. Dr. Reussner is the director of the Kansas Voice Center and a member of the Voice Foundation; specializing in the treatment of voice and throat disorders/diseases, including cancer and thyroid disease. He is able to offer the latest minimally invasive surgical approaches for parathyroid surgery as well. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Being a music-lover, he is also serving on the Board of Directors of the Wichita Grand Opera. In addition to medicine, Dr. Reussner enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, traveling, and playing basketball.

Dr. Julie Yu, Kansas State University As Co-Director of Choral Studies, Julie Yu is part of a team that oversees 8 choral ensembles including Collegiate Chorale, Collegium Musicum, Concert Choir, In-a-Chord, K-State Singers, Men's Choir and Women’s Choir. She teaches undergraduate conducting courses and graduate courses and is Co-Director of the K-State Summer Choral Institute. The K-State Choirs have been selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association conference in 2009, 2012, 2013 and the Southwest American Choral Directors Association (SWACDA) conference in 2012. They have also performed in the American Festival of Music in 2009 (Austria and Czech Republic) and 2011 (Italy). In 2007 she was the featured speaker/clinician at the European Music Educators Association Convention in Naples, Italy and in 2009 was the conductor for the European Music Educators Association Honor Choir in Oberwesel, Germany. She has also conducted numerous honor choirs and festivals in California, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia. She serves as the Repertoire and Standards Chairperson for SWACDA and is a national board member of the National Collegiate Choral Organization. Dr. Yu holds degrees from the University of Central Oklahoma (B.M. Music Education), Oklahoma State University (M.M. Choral Conducting), and the University of North Texas (D.M.A. Choral Conducting).

Convention Accompanists Susan Laushman, Pittsburg High School Susan Laushman is the vocal music instructor at Pittsburg High School and is also Music Director and Choir Master for The Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and her Masters in piano performance and music education certification at Pittsburg State University. Now in her nineteenth year of music education, Susan has taught at PSU, Carl Junction, and Pittsburg High School. She was awarded Music Educator of the Year by the Kansas Federation of Music Teachers Association in May 2007, and received the Pittsburg USD 250 Globe Award for 2006-2007. Susan is active as a professional accompanist for Pittsburg State University and has appeared with composer John Leavitt several times in New York at Carnegie Hall. Her most recent appearance with Mr. Leavitt was May 2008, at The Kennedy Center Concert Hall in Washington, DC. For that concert, members of The Presbyterian Church Choir and 30 members of Susan's Encore Choir from Pittsburg High School were invited to sing under his direction. Susan is also the accompanist for the KCDA annual convention, the KMEA District Choir, and for the KMEA All-State Choir. In 2012, Laushman was named KMEA Outstanding Music Educator.

Christopher Shaw, Hutchinson Middle School

Christopher Shaw is a graduate of Bethel College and Wichita State University, holding a bachelor’s degree in organ performance/teacher certification and a master’s degree in music education with an emphasis in choral conducting. He has taught K-12 Vocal Music in Madison, Kansas 6-12, Vocal Music in Moundridge, Kansas and currently teaches 7th and 8th grade choir at Hutchinson Middle School, in Hutchinson, Kansas. Shaw also serves as staff organist at Plymouth Congregational Church in Wichita, Kansas. He is an active member of the American Guild of Organists where he is the Sub Dean of the Wichita Chapter, the American Choral Directors Association, and National Association for Music Education where he served as the Southeast Kansas Music Educators Association District High School Choral Chair. In addition to teaching and working as a church musician, Chris is an active

recitalist, guest conductor, and accompanist in Central Kansas.
