Keep The Home Fires Burning
Friday 9th November, 7pm Swinderby Church
2
2018 Poppies ….in progress The poppies have become a real community effort and some ladies have made hundreds each (at going to press.) Val has currently made 845 and Veronica and Gillian are very busy too. However, every single poppy that is being made is very important, and whether you make 1 or 1001 I’m sure you’ll agree that the bringing of the community together in Remembrance is the most important thing. There’s still time to be involved before 9th Nov and please make sure you visit the church to see the displays over Remembrance weekend.

Sunday 4th November will be Fireworks at The Plough—to music—with hot food available. 6:30pm. I have been contacted by a villager who has found a ring. As in a wedding ring/engagement ring type of ring. I’d say it is a womans ring—but don’t like to judge. If you have lost one please contact me at any of the above ways with a brief description of the one you have lost so hopefully we can reunite you. Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal This is an appeal for new, non-wrapped toys and gifts for children aged 0 to 16 who might otherwise not receive a present this Christmas. This has been well supported in previous years. Presents may be handed in at the Church Christmas Fair on Friday evening December 7th in Swinderby Village Hall or at the Coffee Stop on Monday mornings in All Saints Church. Thank You, Margaret Newton The Macmillan Coffee Morning in the Village Hall in September organised by the Village Hall raised £289.10. Thank you to everyone who helped or attended. As we look towards remembrancetide this year marks 100 years since the end of the First World War. Our village has some very special events planned and I hope as many of us as possible get involved and it is a real community coming together. 11 men from the village/parish were lost in WWI and their names are inscribed on a plaque within the church. On Friday 9th November you are all invited to our Keep the Home Fires Burning event, which is a non-religious evening of remembrance with a short ‘service’ followed by refreshments. Within the church will also be beautiful poppy displays made by local residents, information about each of the men, and information about the womens suffrage movement (as 1918 was a poignant year when some women were granted the vote.) Please see back cover for more information about the weekend events. Open Mornings at Swinderby School, the next one is on 15th Nov. Remember the deadline for the December LinkUp is 20th November and any Christmas event advertising needs to be in by then. There is no link up in January, so please also let me have any January information in November too. Please support your Link Up Magazine. The magazine is brought to you free by a team of local volunteers. Could you contribute content? Could you collect loose change or make a donation to cover printing costs? Do you use our advertisers? Don’t forget to contact us to advertise your events. (Copy date 20th of the month.)
The copy date for the next Link Up will be 20th November at 5pm. Please note that all articles in the Link Up are taken in good faith. We cannot and will not, take responsibility for any legal queries resulting thereof. The articles do not necessarily reflect our views. We reserve the right not to print some submitted articles.

SCRABBLE The Scrabblers meet every other Tuesday in the Plough at 7pm. We feel very welcome, a lovely log fire, ’bit of banter’ We usually play 2 games, ’nothing serious’ put the world to rights, home for around 9.30pm. We range in ages & ability but always have a good time! See the Plough page to find out when the next meeting is. GOOD COMPANIONS Swinderby Good Companions Club promotes social interaction and friendship for the senior citizens of the village. Regular monthly meetings are held in the village hall between 2pm and 4pm on the second Thursday of every month. Games are played and afternoon tea is served by volunteer hostesses. Outings are organised during the year along with an annual fund raising garden party. BOWLS CLUB The bowls club meet during the summer months at the bowling green (behind the village hall.) I have been informed that sadly member numbers are down this year and as such the club is beginning to struggle. It would be a shame if we lost this club in the village. They are on the look out for new members to go along for fun and friend-ship. Have you been thinking of joining for a while, would you like to see what it is all about and have a try? No experience necessary. No one too old or too young!! Everyone welcome.
THE PLOUGH GOLF SOCIETY Open to all and anyone can join. Playing on the last Fri-day of the month. Contact Adam 861 or 07895 4 BOOK CLUB The book club meets every six weeks or so. Members read and discuss the books. It’s very informal and a great way of coming across new authors. However, as we meet in each other’s houses, there is a limit on numbers. The current one is full but there is a waiting list. Or how about setting up another group? Contact Mikela 868041 SWINDERBY PHONE BOX has been lovingly restored by Simon Longson. It is regu-larly decorated by villagers to celebrate certain times of year. Look out for the next decoration and get involved. The more the merrier.

CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup. Call David Gardiner 868663

Leaking Roof. You may have noticed the scaffolding on the church. By the time you read this the leaking abutment between the tower and the body of the church will have been repaired by placing a lead flashing above the abutment. This method means that the abutment does not have to be removed which could have damaged the roof tiles. Dog Dirt. Sadly there has been a number of occasions when the rear churchyard has been spoiled because dogs have been allowed to roam. Please remember that this is a special place in our village which many people work hard to maintain. If you notice a dog wandering please let me know. Final Churchyard Tidy Up Session of the year is on Sat Oct 27th at 10.00am please think about helping us. Just turn up! Many thanks to all who work so hard to keep the Churchyard looking immaculate.
Coffee Stop is a regular opportunity for people to meet and have a chat - on every Monday 10.30 - 12.00 including Bank Holidays. The next Fellowship Lunch will be on Thursday Nov 1st at 12.00 in the village hall when the main course will be pork steaks. If that meal does not suit you please phone Audrey who will discuss alternatives with you. The month following the lunch will be on Thursday Dec 6th when it will be the Christmas Dinner - turkey of course. Again it is a time to get together with other villagers and to enjoy a 3 course lunch for £3.50! Please let Audrey know if you will be attending on 868478. Remembrancetide. During the weekend of Remembrance Sunday the village is holding several events to commemorate the ending of WW1. On the Friday Evening 9th Nov there will be an event organised by the Parish Council ‘Keep the Homefires Burning’. See separate notice about the details. On Saturday 10th Nov at 10.30 - 11.30 am there will be a bellringing demonstration. Please come to listen to the bellringers and watch them in action - maybe you would like a go! NOTES FROM A SMALL PARISH - OCTOBER 2018 Public Forum The meeting opened on a very sad note when we learned that the Master of a local hunt had been taken ill on a hunt near the village and sadly passed away. The emergency services were called and the village defibrillator was accessed and used. In all such events LIVES conduct a review alongside the East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS). Emergencies are very stressful times and Cllr Ron Hodgson has been coordinating with LIVES and EMAS to look at the access procedure to see if any improvements can be made. The postcode of the defibrillator box is now displayed on the outside of the box to remove any doubt as to where it is located – important if the village gets a second defib and anyway, it’s not always obvious especially if you’re a stranger to the area! Please note that in any cardiac emergency you should always call 999. They will give instructions and the access code for the defibrillator cabinet. A parishioner asked about the break in incident at The Plough recently. The parishioner was advised that anything unusual or noteworthy around the village at the time of the break in should be reported to the police and their contact details are published in the front of the LinkUp. The parishioner was told that the police had been making enquiries in the afternoon of Sunday’s incident and had managed to obtain some CCTV images. We await the outcome of the police's report! County Councillors Report Cllr Mike Thompson told the PC that he had met with the local highways manager to discuss local issues such as potholes etc. He reported that a team had been to Swinderby school to look at the possibility of creating a School Safety Zone (SSZ). They were observing traffic and looking at possible waiting restrictions. The consultee list for the SSZ would include the school itself, All Saints Church, Stagecoach (the bus company) and residents at that part of the High Street and Station Road. He also reported that PCSOs now have enforcement powers and they can now issue speeding and parking fines. Potholes and Lighting It seems that whilst the crew has been busy resurfacing Bulpit Lane, they have also been going round the village filling in any holes that they have seen. Although they have got to the most of them, there are still a few around. You can either report them to me or any councillor, our numbers are in the Link Up, or you can report them yourself at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/potholes . Similarly, as the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer you may notice that the odd street light is out. To report a street light out you can do any of the above or report it at www.lincolnshire.go.uk/streetlighting . You will need the street name and the light number. This can be found on an orange sticker with the number and NKDC written under it. Local Planning and Emergency Planning We have decided against undertaking a Neighbourhood Plan as it looks too long, complicated and expensive in the long run but have decided we will have an Emergency Plan. We have some templates and feel we can cherry pick from these, for example we don't feel there is a risk of flooding here but there could be a major incident on the A46 that we could plan for.
15
Litter Picking The Big Swinderby Litter Pick took part on the 23rd
of last month and the turnout was smaller than expected. We had a smaller haul this time probably due to all the good work we did in the spring litter pick but didn't find any weapons or microwaves this time. It was suggested that we should advertise more and sooner for the spring litter pick so look out for it in these notes and on Nextdoor. Keep the Home Fires Burning This is a series of events to commemorate the end of the First World War and the start of the Suffrage Movement. It will start at All Saints Church at 7pm on Friday the 9
th of November where there will be a
series of readings, poems, First World War songs and followed by refreshments (There is a rumour of Trench Cake but this is unconfirmed at the time of going to press). The Church will open on the Saturday between 10am and 4 pm with a demonstration of bell-ringing from 10:30am. The weekend events will conclude on the Sunday with a lowering of the flag ceremony starting at approximately 10:45am followed by a remembrance service in the church. Full and further details of all of the events can be found in the Link Up and will appear on Nextdoor as well. Dogs on the High Street Playing Field We have had reports that people have been taking their dogs onto the playing field on the High Street even though there are signs on the gate telling you that they are not allowed. The PC is investigating the provision of additional signs to increase adherence to this restriction, which is in place for the safety of all the children that use the area and to protect their eyesight (look up toxocariasis on Google). And talking about the playing field, we have also had some reports of vehicles on there. The field is out of bounds to all vehicles with very little exception, these being emergency vehicles in the pursuit of their duties and the grass cutter. Should anyone need access to the playing field for example, to enable access to tree cutting, they should contact a member of the PC and get their permission. And Finally The owner of the house next to PC's land opposite the crescent doesn't want the history plaque to be sited there so we are looking at alternative locations for this, the favourite so far is the Village Green. (No I've never heard of it before and I've only been here 12 years) Well, it's that bit of land just down from the post box where the bench and a bin already are. As for the original piece of land opposite the crescent we should be looking to reinstate the benches. Now, does anyone know of a chainsaw artist who could do us two large bird benches?... Some dates for your diary Next meetings The dates of the next meetings for your diaries are available on the PC website at http://parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Swinderby/ but for those not connected to the t'interweb they are, Mondays the 5
th of November (Bonfire Night)
and 3rd
of December. Please note, there is no meeting at the beginning of January. The next meeting in 2019 is Monday the 4
th of February. All meetings start at
7:30pm and are held in the small room at the village hall. As usual, all are welcome to attend. Cllr Bob Crozier, Vice Chair, Swinderby PC

CHOPS Report
The delivery into the village on the 12 October came from Prince Petroleum. The price was 52.99p per litre + 5% VAT. The last time we had oil at this price level was January 2014! The average price of oil from 13 suppliers was 55.37p per litre. Oil prices have fallen a little in the last few days. The market is somewhat concerned with the situation in Turkey at the Saudi consulate and to what sanctions might be taken against Saudi. Should this happen, Saudi may well retaliate which could lead to significant increases in oil prices in the short term. The next delivery into the village will be on Friday the 30 November in time for the Christmas fill-up. The subsequent delivery will be on the 25 January 2019. In all cases, the order deadline is midnight on the preceding Sunday. Thanks,
David

This has been a busy few weeks at Swinderby All Saints. We were delighted to invite friends and parents into school to attend our Harvest Festival. The children were able to showcase musical and movement performances; and we were grateful to receive donations of food for Lincoln Larder. The children are becoming Times Tables Rockstars – a small competitive edge has meant that the children have taken a great interest in improving their basic maths skills in and out of school. They are having fun and learning at the same time! We took a group of children to take part in a football tournament hosted by Lincoln City FC. We didn’t make it through to the knock-out stages, but we all had a good time, showed good spirit and are looking forward to playing more matches. When you work hard, you also want to play hard. To the delight of all our children, Friends of Swinderby School organised a School Disco. It was wonderful to see the school hall was full of music and lights and energetic children in their party clothes. Days later, and I still have Baby Shark in my brain (doo, doo, doo…!)
