TIPS FOR A SAFE HALLOWEEN

Dear Parents:

Halloween is a time of fun and excitement forchildren. But there are also risks associated with thisholiday. By following the simple safety tips included inthis brochure you can help to make your child’sHalloween both happy and safe. Please read overthese hints and discuss them with your child. They’llhelp to protect your child from harm during trick-or-treating and other holiday activities. And rememberthat even with holiday fun, safety comes first.

1. Adults should always handle the knife to cut the faceof the pumpkin.

2. Candle-lit jack-o-lanternsshould be kept away fromlandings and doorstepswhere costumes couldbrush against the flame.

3. Keep lit indoor pumpkinsaway from curtains.

4. Make sure the jack-o-lantern’s candle is completely out before leaving thehouse or going to bed.

1. Warn children not to eat any of their treats before theyget home.

2. Examine all ediblescarefully for evidence oftampering before you allowchildren to eat them.

3. Throw away candy that’sunwrapped or has a tornwrapper.

4. Throw away homemadecookies, candy, popcornballs, etc. unless they aremade by someone you knowpersonally (grandma, aunt, cousin, close friend, etc.).

5. Do not allow children under three to have any noveltyitems or candies small enough to present a chokinghazard.

6. Have children carry flashlights to light up dark areas.

7. Clear steps, lawns and porches of anything that couldtrip trick-or-treaters.

8. Make sure that swords, knives, and similaraccessories are made of flexible materials.

• Children shouldnot enter homes orapartmentbuildings unless anadult is with them.

• Trick-or-treatersshould go only tobuildings whereresidents haveoutside lights on asa sign of welcome.

• An adult shouldaccompany youngchildren.

• Costumes shouldbe short enough toprevent childrenfrom tripping andfalling.

• Avoid flimsy andbillowing outfits tominimize the risk offire.

• Look for costumes,masks, beards andwigs that arelabeled flame-resistant.

• Use reflective tapeas part of costumedecoration.

• Make or buycostumes light andbright enough tobe clearly visible tomotorists.

• Make sure thatchildren can seewhere they aregoing.

• Travel in pairs orsmall groups.

• Wear properly fittedshoes or boots.

• Follow allpedestrian safetyrules.
