Summer Learning Loss and Weight Gain

Page 4: Keeping our kids moving in the right direction!

Did you know… During the school year, the skills of low

income students improve at the same rate as their more advantaged peers

BUT Studies show that over the summer, many of

these students show no academic growth at best, and a loss of one to three months of learning, at worst!

Page 5: Keeping our kids moving in the right direction!

What is Summer Learning Loss? Due to lack of school instruction,

students can begin losing the learning they gained during the school year, especially in Reading Spelling Math

Page 6: Keeping our kids moving in the right direction!

Children and Summer WeightDuring the summer: Children can gain weight three times

faster than during the regular school year

This can amount to gaining as much weight during a 3-month summer than during the entire 9-month school year
