Welcome to the jungle! Pental Island Juniors were welcomed to camp by lions, tigers, monkeys and even a couple of poachers! We were off to a great start with fun and engaging devotions from Nick Buscombe. He shared with us each day about the Love of Jesus. He also managed to have us all singing ‘I lost my sheep’ as we wandered around camp. Each morning our campers were woken from their slumber to the tender tones of the bagpipes - a Pental Island tradition! Our days were filled with singing, zumba, archery, leather work, eating damper, fishing, craft and the ultimate game of ‘catch the poachers’ which involved flour bombs, water bombs and rescuing a toy sloth. We were sustained by delicious food prepared by our wonderful cooks Joylene and Newelly. Our cooks also prepared for us a delicious jungle themed banquet dinner. Our camp concluded with marshmallows and music by the campfire where Ben shared a devotion. It was non-stop fun this year at Pental Island! Thank You to all our leaders for making it so great and we look forward to seeing you all next year. Welcome to our new edition of In Step. It’s a busy time at ESA with the Lord moving in His own sovereign ways opening doors of opportunity for us.

It was a great blessing to meet so many friends and supporter’s of ESA at the farewell of Jenny Douglas. ESA has a rich history and we are thankful to God for his hand of blessing.

I’d like to send a special message to Steve Wheaton who recently underwent heart surgery. Thankyou for all of your work for ESA and we wish you a speedy recovery.

There are many camps coming up over the next few months, please pray that each person that attends a camp would feel a sense of God’s love and His plan for their life.

God Bless You, David Molyneux

Annual General MeetingWe wish to advise that ESA’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday November 16th, 2017 in Ballarat at 7pm. Please contact the office if you would like to attend or require more information.

From the CEO

In November, those of you in Victoria who receive posted catalogues from Word bookstore will find an ESA flyer nestled in with your regular posting.

We are seeking to spread the word about our camps, so we’ve put together a flyer highlighting the amazing camps we run. Of course, word of mouth and personal encouragement is the best way to receive news - so please, if you love what we do, tell your family and friends!

We Are Moving The ESA office is currently situated at the Melbourne School of Theology in Wantirna, due to the growth of the College they require the space that we have been renting.

We move out in late November and currently haven’t found our new premises.

We will continue to receive mail at 3/5 Burwood Hwy, Wantirna until early 2018.

We will advise our new office location in the next edition of In Step.

ESA has been running programs including camps for

christian people and their friends and family across

Victoria for over 100 years.

Today, we organise fun, exciting camps in regional

areas year-round. Here’s what we have planned

already - there’s something for everyone:

Come join us. Everyone’s welcome!

What an amazing camp this was! We had so much fun together in the Grampians during the September School Holidays. God did some absolutely incredible things among all the young people who attended. Awesome food, awesome leaders, awesome worship, awesome activities and an awesome God who made it all happen!!

We had beautiful spring weather all week that allowed us to play heaps of games together, go for some big hikes, explore the Halls Gap zoo and challenge each other to a game of mini golf. Not to mention the famous tradition ‘Hunt the Leader’ that took place on the last day, where the campers’ mission was to locate all the leaders who were dressed as ‘mountain-movers’ (influential people in history) that roamed the Halls Gap town centre.

The whole camp was a great opportunity for youth all over Victoria to meet new people and

create friendships that will undoubtedly last a lifetime!

Thanks to our wonderful speaker for the camp, Steven Kilpatrick, we were able to explore and learn about the various mountains in Scripture, including Mt Sinai, Mt Mariah and Mt Calvary. Through these studies, we learnt that God is Holy, He is our provider and His love for us is enormous. God continued to bless the camp through the amazing worship times, as well as the devotions from three incredibly bold leaders that challenged the kids to be vulnerable and open up to someone they trust about the difficulties they face. It was amazing to see the transformation that took place in the campers’ lives once they had encountered God’s love and power.

Praise God for the incredible experience we had!

On Saturday August 26th many people came together at Essendon Baptist Church to celebrate the retirement of the hard working and much loved Jenny Douglas. It was a memorable day as so many of those gathered have such a long history of partnering together with ESA to share the gospel across Victoria.

There was a lovely time of reflecting on the many towns that Jenny has visited over the years and in Bruce Macintosh’s tribute to Jenny he was joined by Peter Geldart to sing a very funny rendition of “I’ve been everywhere man”. It was a fitting choice to celebrate the many hours Jenny has spent travelling to faithfully share in different country areas. Many others shared about Jenny’s great work including Steve Wheaton, Steve Kilpatrick, current ESA Chairperson Joash Belousoff along with a beautiful tribute from Steve and Jenny Nixon.

A special surprise was to have Colin and Helen Rolfs attend from South Australia who met Jenny in the early years of here ministry.

Thankyou to all those who participated and provided photo’s, food and stories of Jenny. We send you off with a blessing Jenny.

Well Done Good and Faithful Servant!

A big thank you goes to all who helped to make Saturday August 26th a very

special day for me. Thank you to all who came (some travelling long distances); to those who sent greetings and gifts; to those who shared memories or photos and spoke encouraging words.

The day was a happy, encouraging time.

A big thank you goes to David and team who arranged the day, set up

the hall and lunch and cleaned after we had gone. Your practical ministry was

very much appreciated.

I am also very thankful to those who prayed for me that day as I had safe travelling on a bad traffic day in Melbourne and was less nervous than I expected to be. I thank God for His mercy and goodness to me.

“The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has

made.” Psalm 145:13b

A Note From Jenny Douglas:

On the 8th to the 12th of July, there was a massive ‘Party in the USA’ down at Camp Wilkin! We journeyed from the surf coasts of Cali, the deserts of Texas, the Skyscrapers of New York and the swamps of Louisiana!

This camp was filled with lots of games, challenges, a

debating competition, gospel electives, a flash mob, and the annual trip to Lorne. Throughout the camp there was a massive battle of the states, and after many team challenges, Florida took out the title of the Super State! The highlight was definitely the worship sessions.

Our amazing speaker Kyle shared four messages with the recurring theme of two opposing beliefs. We learnt about how God leads us in truth, he’s the author of truth and the more we know what is true, the more we learn to appreciate God and the more we find a reason to love God.

This camp was an incredible experience for both the leaders and campers. There’s something special about a group who can come together, worship the same God and where everyone can find their own place. Praise God for all the amazing ways he moved and worked in so many lives!

CAMP REPORT WINTER TEEN CAMP, ANGLESEA JULY 2017

CAMP REPORT WINTER JUNIOR CAMP, ANGLESEA JULY 2017Snowflakes, early morning aerobics, unexpected camp criminals, smores, sand palaces, spatulas instead of forks, turkish delight, testimonies and the declaration of the Mighty Aslan’s coming to Narnia!

Study sessions led by Michael Blumel were profound for campers and leaders alike. Led by the Narnian narrative, we asked the questions, ‘Who am I and why am I here?’ On the first day we learned that God is a Creator God who has asked that we take care of this earth. We learned that we are all apart of God’s family and that all people, although some may seem different, are really our brothers and sisters. On the second day we learnt that Christ’s Grace is enough. We watched the animation of God’s character as the trinity. We understood that Jesus’ message of redemption was so powerful that people wanted to kill him and that His death was necessary to be the ultimate sacrifice for sin. And on the last day we celebrated because the King will return and the whole world will be redeemed through Him. The way that Jesus lived is an invitation for us to jump on board His team and His work in building the Kingdom of God.

Weather all week was amazing which enabled us to enjoy an extremely full camp! The all-time favourite activity hunt the leader saw particular commitment from the leaders this year. One leader donned a mullet just for the event whilst another acted as a tin-man statue, spray painted from head to toe in silver. The beach afternoon involved a round-robin of fantastic games that awarded decorations for campers and overly enthusiastic leaders to sculpt giant sand kingdoms in order to win the competition. The bonfire night is always a hit, but there was a particular joy throughout as we sang songs and sipped on hot chocolate and heard some amazing testimonies. On Girls Day, our daughters of Eve learnt about the depth of the four Greek meanings of the word ‘love’ and on Boy’s Day,

our sons of Adam learned the foundational truth that we are stronger when we are working together. The Carnival Day was filled with wintry sunshine as groups enjoyed a range of activities and games such as rock-climbing, the zip line, archery and soccer. One evening we all carried our pillows and sleeping bags down to the main hall for a classic movie night. And on the last evening the Talent Night went off with a bang with stacks of courageous campers preparing items ranging from messy to musical.

When you put good people, topped with good weather, good food, good snow altogether sets everyone up for a good weekend!! That’s a no brainer right?

So this is something that I was part of and hands down a really fulfilling and absolutely fun filled time!!

Hats off to Deb on the food efforts for us, wow, this was a great success!

Was always ever so pretty to be at Mt Hotham, ‘beautiful winter wonderland!’ I called it, lovely just seeing how the sun sparkled and glistened on the snow! the little things that God shows us brings us to Him and His awesomeness!! You just want to praise His name!

Rescue Husky Dogs were there and they were a pleasure to meet as well.

I recommend this trip we all had times of sharing and time of praying for each other and learning more about our almighty God! a great way to spend a weekend!

AUGUST 2017

YOUNG ADULTS SNOW CAMP

CAMP REPORTHow wonderful it is to be able to share an activity with a group of people who are all doing something they love and at the same time engage them with God’s word.

Gippsland Mountain Bike Camp brought together a group of enthusiastic riders in a weekend of fun and focus.

We enjoyed riding on four of the best tracks in Gippsland - Mt Taylor, Lakes Entrance, Blores Hill and Toongabbie. Dave Maxwell led us in discussions from God’s word.

A special time was had playing a game called ‘deep speak’ where we got to know each other on a deeper level. We experienced acceptance and encouragement as we expressed ourselves and we were able to examine what Gods word means for us in life.
