It is perhaps coincidental that themission took place in the week inwhich we read a haftara from Isaiah,51 which begins with the words “I,surely I, shall comfort and consoleyou.” We all know that whatever theBible informs us about God is done sothat we should know how to imitatethose qualities. The Torah specificallycommands us “v’halachta bidrachav(and you shall walk in His ways).” TheOral Law explains: “Just as He ismerciful, so should you be merciful;just as He comforts mourners, so youshould comfort the mourners; just asHe visits the sick, so should you visitthe sick.”

That is exactly what the Mayor didon his mission. He performed themitzvah of comforting the mournersand the mitzvah of visiting the sick. And he did it in a very public, demonstrative way which broughtsignificant support to our brothers andsisters in Israel, and a very importantmessage to the citizens of New York.

I won’t go into details about theexhausting mission of thirty-six hours(taking off at 5:00 P.M. Monday, andreturning at 5:00 A.M. Wednesday),except to say that the Mayor was avery gracious host. He took us on hisprivate plane, at his own expense, andspared nothing to make sure that wewould all be very comfortable.

What is important is that the Mayor, who by virtue of his being the electedhead of probably the greatest city inthe world, has a powerful pulpitthrough which to instruct by exampleand by words. He used that pulpit withgreat effectiveness on this mission.

He delivered two messages. Thefirst was “Imo anochi b’tzara (I amwith you in your time of pain and

suffering).” He did this at the site ofthe suicide bombing which hadoccurred exactly one week earlier. Heand we lit memorial candles. The Rav

of the Kotel recited an e-l moleh andMeshulam Shulami recited kaddish forhis daughter, Elisheva, age 16, whowas a victim of this murderous act.Shulami’s wife was still on the criticallist in Hadassah Hospital when herhusband was reciting this kaddish.

We are here, the Mayor told a largecrowd, to be with you in your time ofdistress. We are with the victims, theinjured, the rescuers (including ZAKA,the group that retrieves body parts aftera bombing), the mourners, and with allthe people of Israel. The response ofthe crowd was inspiring andspontaneous. As the candles werebeing lit people began to sing Hatikva. And then two groups of yeshiva boysstanding on balconies, with their whiteshirts and black velvet kippot, whowere watching the memorialceremonies, spontaneously began tosing the Star Spangled Banner. The crowd joined in.

The merging of the ideals of two

nations was symbolized in the twoanthems and in the Mayor’s wearing ofa special kipa (which I had theforesight to bring with me and givehim on the plane), with a dugma of theflags of Israel and America. He put iton at the Kotel at 5:00 o’clock, and hewas still wearing it five hours laterafter the memorial, a gathering at theJerusalem City Hall, the walk throughBen Yehuda, and dinner at Café Rimon, after which we returned to his privateplane. Only then did he remove it.

He had expressed his solidaritywith suffering Jews earlier at HadassahHospital in Ein Karem. He and weperformed nichum aveilim for Chanaand Matanya Nathanson who weresitting shiva for their daughter Tehilla, age 2 — a shiva which began a littlelate because the parents themselveswere heavily injured in the attack —and still worrying about their daughterShoshana, age 5, who was criticallyinjured. The scene of expressing theformula of comfort to two peoplesitting in wheelchairs with casts ontheir limbs was unforgettable.

The Mayor continued with bikurcholim in the pediatric ICU of thehospital visiting with children whosurvived — barely — what has cometo be known as the “children’smassacre.”

There was a second message whichthe Mayor delivered from his pulpit:“Do not stand idly by while yourbrother’s blood is spilled.” He heard ofthe spilling of Jewish blood halfwayaround the world and he refused tocontinue with “business as usual.” Hetook his private plane at his ownexpense and brought a small entourageto Israel in order to just show up(remember Woody Allen’s remark:

RABBI LOOKSTEIN ACCOMPANIES MAYOR BLOOMBERGON SPECIAL MISSION TO ISRAEL

Last month, Rabbi Haskel Lookstein had the privilege of going on a mission to Israel with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. They were accompanied by former Mayor Ed Koch; Councilman Simcha Felder, a close advisor to the Mayor; Dr. EsterFuchs (the mother of the Victor children at Ramaz); Jonathan Greenspun (married to Rose Sara Feinerman, a Ramazalumna); Jennifer Falk, the Mayor’s Deputy Press Secretary (and also a Ramaz alumna); and various security officers. Hereported on this mission in his sermon the following Shabbat and also in The Jewish Week. Rabbi Lookstein reports belowwhat happened and what this mission meant to Israelis and to New Yorkers.

The Rabbi and The Mayor

“Ninety percent of life consists of justshowing up”). He came to stand up andto say very clearly that “terror inflictedon you is terror inflicted on everyone.”It didn’t take long for his words to haveadditional meaning when we alllearned two days later about theninety-five Shiite Moslems who weremurdered by their own brothers in Iraqin that tragic bombing of the Mosque. He stated something that Rabbi ArthurHertzberg in his Op Ed piece in theNew York Times didn’t seem tounderstand: “You do not negotiate witha gun at your head; you fight back.”

Mayor Bloomberg was THERIGHT PERSON, IN THE RIGHTPLACE, AT THE RIGHT TIME, ANDHE DID THE RIGHT THING. Thoseof us who know the history ofAmerican Jews, particularly during theHolocaust, know that American Jewsin positions of power have not alwaysstood up when Jewish blood was beingspilled. Unfortunately, they often stoodby instead of standing up.

Both of his messages “I am withyou in your time of distress” and “Donot stand idly by....” were receivedenthusiastically in Jerusalem and inNew York. The crowds that greetedhim in Israel and applauded his wordswere quite overwhelming. The crush

on Ben Yehuda was not to be believed.I understand the media in Israelcovered every aspect of his visit veryapprovingly.

The media in New York — all thenewspapers, the radio and TV gaveenormous coverage to this event. EvenPolish TV at 11:00 P.M. carried it (I think it was the only place on whichI appeared on television — somebodyquipped that they probably thoughtthat I was the Mayor). Everyonecommented favorably. Everyoneappreciated the sincerity of this effort.

Which brings me to a closing wordabout Michael Bloomberg. Afterspending thirty-six hours with him, I came to understand him as anextremely bright person, very capable, extraordinarily hard-working (he wentfrom the plane at 5:00 A.M. onWednesday to visit a woundedpoliceman in the Bronx and thentraveled by subway in order to be in hisoffice at 9:00 A.M. so that nobodyshould say that he was taking too muchtime off). He understands some of theintricacies of politics and perceptionand he is sensitive to them.

I thought he grew as a Jew on thatmission. He began to look morecomfortable in the kipa (he is blessedwith a good head of hair to which to

attach a kipa — not like the writer ofthis article) and he got increasinglycomfortable at the Kotel and at otherceremonies. Most important of all, heclearly identified with the Jewishpeople, with its plight, and with itstragedies. I guess we all grew Jewishlyon that mission.

We hope that the Mayor willcontinue to use his pulpit effectively, purposefully, with courage, withcompassion, with idealism, and withhis Jewish neshama.

Haskel Lookstein

On August 14, the EasternSeaboard was hit with the Blackoutof 2003, which lasted until 6:10 PMon August 15th -— less than an hourbefore evening services were to beginfor Shabbat. The Upper East Sidewas hit harder than most of NewYork, and the results could have beendisastrous. Our community is trulyfortunate that Rudy Arjune, ourbuilding superintendent, WilmanZumbana, his second-in-command,and Robert Evans, our evening guard, were on-duty when the catastrophestruck and through their dedication,self-sacrifice, and devotion to ourcommunity kept a steady vigil on thesynagogue for the entire duration ofthe Blackout. They were all here for36 straight hours, from Thursdaymorning when they arrived for work, until Friday evening, after theEdelstein’s Aufrauf dinner. We thankas well Miguel Olivo, superintendentof the Middle School, and RafaelRestrepo, morning guard, whocontributed their time above the call of duty.

Kehilath Jeshurun is founded onTorah and Menschlikeit, which meansnot only treating people with respect, but also dedicating one’s resourcesand effort to the needs of others.Rudy, Wilman and Robert did justthat, and for that they deserve ourprofound gratitude.

NORMAN JASPANHe was the center of five generations

in our congregation, beginning with hiswife’s grandfather, Harry Fischel, andcontinuing on to his seven grandchildren, all of whom are either graduates of Ramazor students in our school.

Norman Jaspan was a highlysuccessful management consultant whopioneered in the field of preventing whitecollar crime in business. He was theauthor of numerous books, including TheThief in the White Collar.

A loyal member of our congregation,he never failed to support our activities, and he served proudly as a Trustee. Eventhough illness in the last ten years sappedhis strength, you would always see himwalking along the street or sitting in shulwith a brilliant smile on his face.

Most of all, he was a family man whodearly loved his beloved wife, Dr. JeanneRafsky, of blessed memory, and his sons,daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, whonot only gave him great nachas butextraordinary honor, respect, and care.

DR. SYLVIA FRIEDMANDr. Sylvia Friedman joined our

congregation only a few years ago, afterthe passing of her husband, Harold

Friedman. Together with him, they werephilanthropic leaders in the community,in JDC, ORT, NYANA, UJA-Federation,and other worthy causes. Dr. Friedmanwas a psychologist with a fine practice. She helped many people and gavemeaning to many lives.

In her last years she was severelyimpaired by strokes. But she conductedherself with grace and courage through itall. She was a very special Jewish lady.

RITA ABRAHAMShe was a widow for twenty-five

years, having lost her husband, Roy, at afairly young age, but you would not havenoticed it by looking at her confident, determined, and optimistic bearing thatwas highlighted by a very genuine, perpetual smile.

Rita Abraham reared her sons,Andrew and Phillip, in our community. Both are alumni of Ramaz. Phillip livesin New York with his wife and twochildren. Andrew lives in Har Nof withhis wife and eleven children. She wasvery proud of both boys.

She loved KJ and never failed tosupport the work of our congregation. She very much enjoyed her associationwith us, even as we benefited from hersupport.
