.that they learned about from family and friends.Informants breast-fed their infants in a context thatwas not supportive of breast-feeding. The womenin their environment whom they turned to foradvice were not knowledgeable about lactation andoften had negative attitudes toward breast-feeding.Support from the health care system was uneven, and mothers who had a short duration of breast-feeding had the least support. Formula supplemen-tation has been associated with shortened durationof breast-feeding. Morse, Harrison, and Prowse(1986) identified a pattern of minimal breast-feeding in which formula- and breast-feeding arecombined, but only after a period of exclusivebreast-feeding during which lactation has beenestablished.

Health promot ion goals for the year 2000 includeincreasing both the incidence and duration ofbreast-feeding. Low-income and black women havebeen targeted for special attention because theyhave the lowest rates of breast-feeding. If we hopeto increase breast-feeding among low-income blackwomen, we need to invest in and support those whodecide to breast-feed. Styles of infant feeding are

passed from older to younger women and are basedon successfully feeding infants over centuries. Ifwe can assist some low-income black women tohave successful breast-feeding experiences, they inturn can be models for a new style of infantfeeding.
