MOVING FORWARD

NEWS FROM PSSA’S GRANTS ADMINISTRATOR

Happy Memorial Day!The PSSA Annual Membership

meeting is on Saturday, May 13, 2017. Thank you to those who submitted Award Nominations. They will be presented at the Banquet. (Lunch will be similar to last year) Come and help support and congratulate the award winners for this year. Also show your appreciation to Roger Auker and Steve Matscherz for their service to the Board.

Late registrations should be phoned to me ASAP. 1-814-464-3971

Our first educational session will be hosted by Dale Vagts from V & V Insurance. This is the company that covers our umbrella liability insurance for clubs/trails. Club representatives are asked to bring their current policy to the meeting. Dale will discuss issues, concerns and answer questions.

Mike Grant from Snow Trails TV will update the members concerning our Video Project. We are in need of sponsors from the PA Wilds – Benezette/Clearfield/ St. Marys area and Region One in Erie County. Contact Lori Elliott, Grant Administrator for further information.

We are planning time to discuss the need for a Registration Fee increase. Currently Michigan and New York are discussing the possibility to raise their fees which are much higher than ours. This increase has the potential to provide more funding for all trails – state, federal, private land trails and game commission trails in Pennsylvania. Come to the meeting and voice your opinion. Information will be

shared on the current status of the proposal to increase the registration fee.

Register now on-line at www.pasnow.org

Information for Nominations for the three open Executive Board positions is elsewhere in the Keystone Snowmobiler. Thank you to those who accepted the challenge.

We again ask for auction items to help defray the cost of the Luncheon/Awards. Flower decorations are always welcome.

The Power Sport Show committee has been working on several new events. Friday night (weather permitting) will feature the “Tough Trucks”. These are always thrilling and a fan favorite. The tractor pulls will return for the Saturday event. This event drew a large crowd last year.

More events mean we need more volunteers. If you can help in any way contact Travis Mathna, the PowerSport Chair at 717-677-8089.

Reminder: Voucher Raffle drawing will be held at this meeting. Send your tickets to the Palmyra Office.

PSSA continues to be involved with the Game Commission Focus Group. Any new proposals will be posted on our website at www.pasnow.org

Hello, PSSA members,I am happy to let

you know that we have received the agreement for our new grant for mini-grants, DCNR Round

22. We do not yet have approval to proceed, but we will send a press release and an email to your club’s president or grant contact person when we are ready to open up another round. We will also post an announcement and the application on the website when this occurs. Keep an eye out for this information this summer.

Also, the last rounds of DCNR Round 19 and 20 grants just ended, so there will be a little amount of funds left in each. Clubs, be thinking about projects that are of any emergency nature for which you would need some financial assistance. We’re not sure yet what the exact available amount will be, but wanted to inform you of the potential.

That’s all to report in regard to grants for this month. Hope to see you at the membership meeting in May!

Lori Elliott

LATE NEWSThe Keystone Snowmobiler regrets

to inform our fellow PSSA members of the passing of Donald Clouser. Don passed away on Friday, April 21st. Don was a very active snowmobiler for more than 50 years and served as a PSSA Director and was the “spark plug” behind the PSSA Fall Snowmobile Shows for many years. Memorial Service arrangements were pending at the time of publication.

NOMINATIONS FOR THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS - PRESENTED By CHARLES WALTER, SECRETARyArline LaTourette792 Torrey RoadHonesdale, PA 18431Occupation: Finance/Accounting ProfessionalPSSA Member for 9 yearsMember of ACE Snowmobile Club, NEP SnoTrails, Ridge Riders of Whitney Point, NyWhen I decided to move back in 2004 to Wayne County where I was born and raised, I had no idea that I would be getting involved in a sport that gives me so much joy! During that winter I was bemoaning the fact that I loved the three seasons that were NOT winter to the person who was to become my husband. I asked him, “What can you do in the wintertime around here?” He stated, “you need to get a hobby!” Little did I know that I had asked the right person! Clinton LaTourette ended up taking me out for a ride through the trails around Honesdale and I was hooked. It was not the nightmare sport I remembered as a teen in the late 60’s when a person rode 50 feet, got stuck, wore jeans, and nearly froze to death in a short period of time. The technology has come a long way! The ACE Snowmobile Club trails are some of my favorite riding. The Wellsboro and PA Grand Canyon area is another of my top riding places. I have been to West yellowstone area twice and am looking forward to another trip there next year.My finance and accounting background comes from more than 20 years in the computer industry working for several multinational corporations. My Bachelors degree is in Business Administration with a concentration on accounting. I am currently working in accounting for Marshall Machinery, Inc., which is an equipment dealer in Honesdale, PA. Another of my responsibilities is to lead the Beach Lake United Methodist Church Finance Committee as the chairperson in the second year of a three year term. I have been an elected Auditor for the Oregon Township for 7 years and am currently in my second term. I believe that the most pressing issue for PSSA is the financial stability to be able to fulfill our charter in pursuit of the best options and legislation for the snowmobilers of Pennsylvania. My vision for the future of PSSA is that the organization continues to advocate for safe, funded trails for families and out of state tourists to enjoy our state and see it from the seat of a snowmobile.

Who would have guessed that central Pennsylvania would experience a blizzard with record snowfalls in the middle of March, especially after the mild weather in January and February?

On March 18, 2017, our club held the 12th annual King of the Mountain Snowmobile Hillclimb event. The local trail conditions may have lowered our expected participants but those who attended had a great day. We hosted 165 entries on 120 sleds. This year the committee added a few new classes and raised the payouts, too.

THANK yOU - Mike Knefley, owner and general manager of Ski Sawmill Family Resort and his ski patrol. This weekend is not possible without his generosity and the ski patrol’s dedication to the event.

THANK yOU - RACE SPONSORS: AJ’s Outdoor Power Equipment, Amsoil – Jeremy Poust – www.TruckOilGuy.com, Best Line Equipment, Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, Fairfield Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Matt Frye State Farm Insurance, Freezer’s Auto Parts, Home Heating Garage, J&M Construction Specialties, Keystone Advertising Specialties, Kurtz Motorsports, Inc., Marquardt Farms, Mike’s Electric Repair, Red Dog Mobile Storage, The Farm on Beeber Drive, Williamsport Honda, Wood’s Excavating, and ye Olde Cycle Barn, without these local businesses support we could not continue to do this event.

It takes a lot of time to coordinate this event. We appreciate our snow events coordinator, Tim Wood and our race day coordinators, Robbie Rabb and Matt Rabb! Thank you for another great event.

Of course our many volunteers are equally as important. We thank you all for your hard work and dedication to this event.

We will be doing it all again next year for the 13th Annual – KING OF THE MOUNTAIN with a tentative date of March 17, 2018.

The club held the 4th Annual Budman Benefit Ride on Saturday, April 8, 2017. The benefit ride began when the rides’ namesake, Brian Budman, had a serious automobile accident which left him paralyzed and hospitalized for nearly a year. The idea for the first benefit ride was to fundraise to make Brian’s home handicap accessible with ramps, handicap shower facilities, etc. Since then the annual funds generated have been given to other local families in financial need. This one time a year event is unique because it requires the cooperation between approximately eighteen private landowners.

This year a record 333 riders registered for the benefit. The ride begins and ends on the property of Brian Heller. Brian is the creator and coordinator of this event. He is also a close

friend of the Budman family. Club members help Brian with setup, registration, guide the ride, and clean up after the event. Brian would like to thank the landowners, friends and club members who donate meals and drinks for the riders to enjoy before and after the ride. Plus without their cooperation this event would not be as successful.

The ride is held all day and groups leave about every 30-45 minutes. The guided ride is approximately twenty-six miles of different types of terrain and it takes almost 3 hours to complete. Everyone had a great time riding and donating to a great cause. The proceeds from this event go to cancer research and three families that have a family member battling cancer.

Respectfully submitted, Susan Iachini, CPAST, Secretary

March is our month off from workdays. Usually we are out riding, but you know how little snowfall we had across the state. Some riders went out, and sent back mixed reports. Facebook had regular updates stating everything from “The trails were better than expected.” to “Just stay home.” These reports were based on the low snow totals and lack of base. Everyone said that DCNR did a great job with what they had to work with. Thank you to everyone that posted comments and pictures to let us know what to expect before driving to the club.

Our regular work-days for the year usually begin in April starting with the annual Adopt-A-Highway. We had to postpone it this year due to several scheduling conflicts. We will have to update you about that in the next issue. We typically pick up between 42-86 bags of litter. We divide our crew of volunteers into 2 groups for the different sections we are in charge of. We return to the clubhouse around noon for pizza and pop. Strange as it seems our local newspaper the Tribune Review recently published an article about our area using Penn Dot as the major source for road clean-up. The article went on to say how many miles of trail we have in our area to be cleaned up. It stated that only 22% of our highways have volunteers for cleaning up roads, and more groups

or individuals are needed. Penn Dot will provide gloves, signs, bags, green vests, etc. for the job.

Saturday, May 13th is the next scheduled workday for the club. We will be meeting at 9 o’clock at the clubhouse to start a little spring cleaning and to work miscellaneous projects. We may even head out to the highway for the clean-up. If you have any other projects that you would like to see done in or around the club please contact a board member or join us at one of our meetings. The meetings are the second Thursday of every month at 8 o’clock in the clubhouse. The next meeting is, May 11. We’ll be happy to see you there, and feed you some pizza.

The Laurel Mountain Volunteer Group met in March. The local area is used by bikes, horses, hikers, snow-shoes, dogsleds, and skiers. DCNR’s Ed Callahan and Rachael Mahony, pulled representatives from each group to discuss what the overall goals are for the new year. Saturday, June 3‚ National Trails Day, Saturday, July 29, and Saturday,

September 30‚ National Public Lands Day are this year’s dates to help out. There is a variety of work available for anyone, so please mark those dates in your calendar. The friends of Laurel Hill State Park also have some scheduled work-days through the year. Club work-days count towards credit for your membership renewal discounts. All clubs and organizations appreciate any time that you’re willing to give. Thank you in advance.

Here is some information from a recent online survey asking how many miles did you ride this 2016-2017 season? This survey was posted the last week in March:

LAUREL HIGHLANDS SMC

The big news for the sled manufacturers is the following - Arctic Cat and yamaha are both making a 200cc sled for 2018 that will be trail legal. It sure is nice being able to move these sleds when they get stuck. Good luck with our heavy 4 stroke sleds. When I read this article in both SnowGoer and American Snowmobiler, I thought to myself the following: yamaha does not make the old Snoscoot, the 250, 300, 340, 440, 485, or 500 sleds. Let’s not forget the kids - they are our future of snowmobiling.

Take Care--Until next time,Jim Wilkinson & Shelly Buckles
