JOIN US TO CELEBRATE KENDAL’S SPIRIT!There is no better year to celebrate the spirit of our fair town than this. The devastating floods back in December tested the strength and resilience of our communities, and although the suffering it caused was immense and lasting, the town has displayed incredible toughness in re-building itself.

The generosity and compassion offered by so many people during this time are certainly worthy of celebration. So let’s take to the streets and enjoy a fun-filled evening of music, dance and merriment, and above all let’s celebrate Kendal’s spirit.

Double the fun in 2016This year’s festivities don’t end as the last float turns out its lights on Friday evening; oh no there is much more! For the first time, Kendal Torchlight Carnival will spill into Kendal Town Centre on the Saturday with a full day street party for you to enjoy.

With a dance arena, the Lakeland Radio stage, musical performances and carnival workshops, not to mention the chance to meet a 4-metre high carnival elephant (yes honestly), it promises to be a whole lot of fun.

Welcome to the Torchlight Carnival 2016

A round of applauseOf course, it goes without saying that none of this would be possible if it weren’t for the incredible support and enthusiasm received every year. The carnival is a huge undertaking by a small team of dedicated individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it a success. It’s also a collaboration with a variety of generous local businesses who offer their support and sponsorship year after year (see pages 28-29).

But without a doubt, our biggest heroes are the many volunteers that offer their time to make this event happen. Without them, there is no Torchlight so we extend a massive thank you to each and every one of you.

And finally, thanks to you, for purchasing this programme to support the cost of the event and for lining the route year after year with excitement and cheer. It’s that passion which keeps this important community event alive and which pushes us each year to think bigger and better!

So from the whole Torchlight team, we hope you have a terrific time at the 2016 event. If you require any assistance at all our team of Torchlight Marshalls will be happy to help.

St John’s Hospice

St John’s Hospice is a local charity which provides free palliative care to patients with life shortening conditions living in North Lancashire, South Lakes and parts of North Yorkshire. They first opened their doors in 1986 and for 30 years those doors have never closed – day or night. They have provided hands-on nursing care for local people facing the most challenging time of their lives, they have supported their families and friends and they have walked alongside them during their bereavement journey for as long as they have needed it.

Animal Rescue Cumbria The Wainwright Shelter CIO

Animals go into care for a variety of reasons, from stray/abandoned to people moving house and unable to take them. The staff team is a small group of able and dedicated professional animal carers who are assisted by equally dedicated volunteers. The kennels can accommodate 14 dogs, and each dog has free running exercise five times a day. The cattery takes 35-40 cats and kittens, and each cat pen has heating and an exercise area, and the main cattery has a conservatory where the cats take turns to play and sleep in the sun.

Craig RussellTorchlight Director

Kendal Torchlight Carnival has been an inspiration for Craig growing up in Kendal. He remembers the great display of pride in the town’s workers, the wonder of its industry, the community spirit of its organisations and the creativity of its artists and makers. Craig now works with the Torchlight team to enable the current and future generations of the town to be

inspired, have fun and contribute to a celebration of what the town is about.

Meet the 2016 Torchlight Carnival Team These are the dedicated individuals who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to create a fantastic two-day carnival that Kendal can be proud off. Let’s give them a round of applause.

George Cotter Social Media & Web Support

Having grown up in Kendal and recently returned following ten years living in Leeds, George was has been a valuable member of the Torchlight team since 2014. The Carnival benefits from his eight years of digital marketing experience across various sectors

as well as from his enthusiasm for the event born from a childhood of spectating.

Cath Dutton Torchlight Entrants Coordinator

Cath Dutton, the owner of People Junction and Josie Pike, business administrator at People Junction, joined the Torchlight team this year after Cath volunteered as a marshal in 2015 and got the bug. As well as running a HR, People and Business Support Company, Cath has

organised Kendal Festival of Food for that last four years so is no stranger to the hard work that goes into planning big events.

Ali Myers Charities Co-Coordinator

Ali joined the Torchlight team last year, and her wealth of experience in security and working at festivals, gigs and corporate events all over the country has proved to be a tremendous asset. Ali’s passion for the Carnival is driven by her ambition for her young son to enjoy this traditional local event as much as she has over the years.

Craig BaldwinVolunteer Coordinator

Craig joined the Torchlight team as a volunteer marshal in 2013 when he saw a call for volunteers. Since realising how much support the Torchlight Carnival needs he has continued to volunteer each year. With every year he has taken on more responsibility and as a key

member of the committee he is now responsible for recruiting and briefing the volunteers.

Colin BensonCarnival TreasurerColin is old enough to have watched the first ever Torchlight and has attended either as a spectator or as part of the Burneside Amateur Theatrical Society’s floats over the years. Having helped build and dismantle several floats, he knows only too well how much planning and teamwork goes into creating each one. It’s Colin’s first year on the Torchlight team, and already his vast accounting and finance experience is being put to good use.

Why not join the 2017 management team and help shape the future of this fantastic event.

Kendal Torchlight Carnival is, and always has been run by volunteers.

Each year Torchlight needs a core team to take on the essential jobs that make it happen. The more people on the team, the easier the jobs become.

And there is plenty of help needed on the night too:

Marshals | Entry Stewards | Audience Surveyors and Programme Sellers | First Aiders | Fundraising Partners and Volunteers

It’s fun, rewarding and allows you to share your pride in Kendal. Contact: Vicki Wright on 07846 973857 or email [email protected]
