St. John The Evangelist,

VESTRY MEETING The Vestry or Election of
Churchwardens meeting was held after the Mothering Sunday Service on March 21st.
There were forty-two people
present whose names were recorded and will be kept for posterity.
The Reverend John Andrews was in the Chair. He read out the minutes of last year’s
meeting, which were agreed and signed.
The Election of Churchwardens for the coming year followed.
There were two Nomination forms, which had been handed
to the Vicar before the meeting.
Julia Bush, proposed by Heather Noad and seconded by Deborah Barnes and Raymond
Victor Naish, proposed by Leslie Michael Callow and seconded by Jean Fenwick. As there
were no further nominations Julia and Ray were declared
‘elected’. The Vicar thanked them for
their work during the past year, saying that they had been a
great help to him and Mrs. Andrews during their first full year in the parish.

Kenn’s Wine Chalice
Readers probably do not know that the wine chalice, which is used in Kenn Church Sunday
by Sunday at the Communion Services, was presented to this Church by Queen Elizabeth I in
1575. It is said that she gave many of these Chalices to
Churches at that time and that she paid for them with her own money.

Mothering Sunday at St John's 21st March
This year Mothering Sunday dawned clear but chilly, and the spring sunshine made Kenn
Church a lovely, bright place in which to celebrate this special
day. Before the service began the
altar was decorated with a beautiful banner, made for us
by Robin Rogers. Thank you Robin. It was great to see all the children from Kenn, who
had brought their Mums along, and also a mum who had come all the way from Bristol to join
us.
John had written us a lovely service which Celia topped off with a truly wonderful 'psalm
'Poor Old Mum'. It made us laugh as we sang it, but it also
reminded us of the extensive job specification needed if you had to advertise the post of
Mother. (find the Psalm elsewhere in this mag.)
After the service we enjoyed a scrummy Simnel Cake, made
by Celia. Acres of print have been filled
with theories about the origins of Simnel Cake so I won't start here, suffice to say it was
delicious!

The Best News from BIFFA (at last!)
On Thursday 25th March I received a letter from BIFFAWARD, confirming a
grant of £25,000 towards the cost of the 'New Room and
Looroom' at St John's. PHEW! It's been a long job to get this
money, and the application has been subject to great scrutiny. I
therefore think it fitting to list the reasons the grant has been awarded.
Improved hygiene for the making of refreshments during
church and village events.
Provision of a meeting room for small groups in the community in Kenn.
A toilet, important during
special services. Particularly at funerals, folk arriving from afar, sometimes in distress, will not
have to be sent to the pub. Congregation will be more
comfortable, as is acceptable in the 21st century.
Church can be used for concerts etc when the public
attend for more than an hour. Youth groups, Sunday school
will have secure facilities.
I hope this shows that the 'New Room' is for everyone who lives in and contributes to the life of
Kenn.

KENN NEWS & VIEWS KENN WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Our March Meeting was held in the Village Hall, where the kitchen, loos, etc, are being rebuilt: this meant we were surrounded by all the equipment and tables showing the plans for the work. Then our Speaker, Mrs. S. Parslow from Wiltshire Farm Foods arrived and set up a mobile kitchen. We speedily dealt with all the business, including a request for a delegate for the EGM at Weston. The yearly draw tickets had arrived from NFWI, the first prize this year being £5,000. A group had gone to the Bronte Evening at Portishead and had really loved it, and two members had enjoyed a lunch at Tickenham WI. A party of members will go to the Group Meeting on 7th April at Nailsea. As the Speaker there will be a Fireman, the competition is for a Limerick about the Fire Brigade – Rosemarie Ford’s splendid effort has been chosen as our entry. Coming events include a day trip to Winchester, a visit to Slimbridge, a three day break in Norfolk, a theatre outing to London, as well as concerts, golf, abseiling, kite flying and an afternoon with a dancing master to learn about 17th century dances – and many other items. As someone remarked, if you had the time and energy, you could be out every day with the WI.
By this time, the mobile kitchen was steaming away, with peeps and alarms going off, so business was concluded to enable us all to enjoy an unexpected supper. While Sarah Parslow told us about Wiltshire Farm Foods, Hilary served up samples from their extensive menu. These ranged from chicken dishes to fish, followed by a variety of sponge puddings with custard. All the meals are cooked at Trowbridge and British products are used whenever possible. The company will deliver as many, or as few, meals as required, and their area goes down as far as Weston-super-Mare. It was stressed that they prefer to deliver fewer meals to leave time for the deliverer to make sure that all is well with the customer and arrange for any alterations to their requirements. The Competition was for a favourite spoon and this was won by Eileen Prew, with Margaret Chappell second and Rose Jeffrey third. As there was no way of making tea, due to the building work, various members had brought large thermos jugs, so we still had our cups of tea – though I don’t thing many of us had room for the biscuits on offer after Hilary’s efforts. Our next Meeting is on 14th April, when the talk will be about Bath Aqua Glass and the Competition is for a piece of decorative glass. All visitors are welcome.
Shirley Livesey.

BIRD NEWS I
Every winter, on six dates, ducks and
wetland birds are counted right across
Britain – at all the major sites.
This is known as the WEBS count
(Wetland and Estuary Birds Survey) and
I assist with the counts at Shapwick
Heath.
This is quite hard work, as it involves a
lot of walking over rough ground a
certain mental alertness when a large
flock of mixed duck species are flushed!
The upside is that we are permitted to
walk over private areas of this national
nature reserve and in addition to the
birds we count – Waterfowl, Waders,
Herons, and Kingfisher – we often see
other interesting birds and mammals.
All of the counts are collated, first
regionally, and then nationally, so that
the winter populations can be
monitored.
We are always looking for trainee duck
counters (full training provided!) so if
anyone would like to try it, please let
me know.

BIRD NEWS II
Forty Swans arrived in a field near the
top of Nailsea Wall a few weeks ago
and stayed a long time. It is a field
where this has happened before. It has
lush, green grass on it. It has been said
that two swans eat as much grass as one
sheep. I expect the family who own the
field were glad to see the back of them.
Rooks have started building a Rookery
in an Ash tree in the Churchyard. This
is the first time this has ever happened.
Brian and Juliet Stowell have been
watching a pair of Magpies building a
nest in their neighbour’s garden. The
birds have been stealing their building
sticks from a dead plum tree in Brian
and Juliet’s garden.
I heard the first Chiff-Chaff of the year
calling from a tree in the garden at
“Carpenter’s Farm”. Chiff-Chaffs are
generally the first migrants to arrive in
springtime. They are small brown
birds, not easily seen. I heard this one
on the 26th
March.

Cruising the Caribbean part 3 Well after a couple of 'Sea days' to get ship shape, it was 'Land Ho' on Monday morning as we approached St Maarten/St Martin. This little gem was discovered by both the Dutch and the French and the ensuing territorial wrangle was settled by flag bearing representatives of both countries standing back to back on the beach, walking away from each other, and claiming all the land they had each walked round when they met again. Thus they divided the island as it is today. Docking in Dutch Philipsberg for shopping led to a scenic taxi ride across to French Marigot for a lazy 'local' lunch. Then back to the quay and 'anchors away. If it's Tuesday it's St Lucia. Not the richest place on our travels but easily my favourite. A few hundred yards off the tourist route and we were seeing and smelling the fruit and veg market, picking up tips on how to cook what we saw and marvelling at the dexterity of the fishmonger, chopping a whole Tuna into steaks with a razor sharp machete (he still had all his fingers).
KENN NEWS & VIEWS Wednesday meant a shamelessly lazy day on the beach in Princetown, Barbados. We were glad that nearly all the show cast, activity crew and shop staff could get time off to spend a few hours swimming and sunbathing. It was good to get to know Rachel and Jeremy's friends who have been so good to them over the last year. Once the 'GTS Summit' had cast off it was all speed towards St Kitts. This can sometimes have quite an effect on the orchestra and cast during a show, as can rough seas. The 940-seat theatre is at 'the pointy end' of the ship (food at the back, fun at the front) and hitting a big wave whilst wearing a big feathery headdress can give you serious whiplash. Thursday and St Kitts, perhaps the nicest, if modest shops, and an ancient fort which was battled over for years by the French and the Brits. We dutifully clambered over every square inch of it. With amazing speed, Friday arrived, and we were in St Thomas, in the American Virgin Islands, and couldn't we tell. A beautiful spot, with all the refinements the US could muster. The cable car up to Paradise Point, and then the view meant a morning I'll always remember. It was hard to believe a whole week was gone. We settled down for the two homeward 'sea days', determined to fit in as much as possible. Julia & Tim Gardens for Butterflies
As part of a video project I am doing on
British Butterflies, I am looking for
gardens that attract good numbers of
butterflies.
The particular shot I am after is to get
butterflies ‘nectaring’ in the foreground
with a background clearly showing we are
in a garden environment.
It does need to be exceptional, not just one
of two butterflies!
When the warmer months are with us, if
anyone does have this happening in their
garden, please give me a call to see if I am
available.
