The Christian Life boys var-sity basketball team finished 8-15 overall last season and 6-10 in the North Division of the Midwest Clas-sic Conference. This season, CLS jumps over to the more geographi-cally suitable South Division, but that means being lumped in with the league’s heavyweights such as Racine St. Catherine’s and Racine Lutheran, not to mention Shoreland Lutheran just down the road.

Despite competing in a challenging division on the heels of an off-year, there is reason for optimism in the Eagles’ camp.

Four talented players return, who collectively will look to pick up the slack left by Charles Crawford, lost through graduation. Crawford averaged a team-high 15.8 points per game last season.

The returning quartet consists of Jon Metz, a 6-foot-2 senior guard; Dan Rozema, a 6-foot-4 senior forward; Matt Pitt, a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward; and Sam Brekke, a 6-foot-1 senior guard. Pitt is the leading return-ing scorer, averaging 9.7 points per game last year. Brekke added 8.2 points

per game to the cause, while Roz-ema checked in at 6.6 points per game and Metz added 4.7. Rozema led the team in assists with 3.5 helpers per contest. A returning let-ter winner expected to see consid-erable minutes is Pierson Kaye, a 6-foot-2 senior guard.

“We have the talent to be com-petitive in the South Division,” said head coach Steve Powell, who is in his 15th season at the helm. “We will have a two-pass offense and will attack the basket quickly.”

Look for the Eagles to take advantage of their team speed and get up and down the court quickly, attempting to steal a few transition buckets. Powell, who doubles as the school’s athletic director, said he plans to press the opposition most of the game.

“We have the most depth in the 15 years I’ve been coaching,” stated Powell. “We would like to keep our starters in as much as possible, but we can go 10 deep to give them a break and we’ll rotate as needed.”

Powell told the parents of the players at a recent meeting that, although the competition will be tough, the team will be fun to watch. “People will get their money’s worth,” he said.

The key to the Eagles’ success will be to con-nect on a high percentage of their shots.

“Matt Pitt is a key play-er for us,” noted Powell. “He can score inside and out, and is hard to stop. You try to block his shot from the perimeter and he goes right around you.

“Rozema can play any position on the floor. As teams try to stop him at 6-4, that will open it up for Matt’s shots.”

Depth and a swarming defense will be keys to success in 2011-12

Boys varsity hoops ready for the challenge of its toughest schedule

CLS looks to play solid team defense. Powell said this is one of the better defensive squads he has had under his watch.

“You have to have it in your heart to play tough defense,” said the veteran coach. “We scrim-maged a couple of teams and the coaches said they couldn’t run their offense because of our defense.”

The question mark comes inside. The Eagles do not have the type of players who defend or at-tack the post.

“If we can come out of the season .500, I’d be happy,” said Powell. “We have never played a schedule this tough. This year will either make us step up and improve, or we will have a season of building for the future of the program.”

Next season, nine schools are dropping out of the huge Midwest Classic Conference, leaving CLS, Lake Country Lutheran, Living

Word Lutheran, St. John’s Military Academy, St. Joan’s, Hope School, Brookfield Academy, Wayland Academy, Heritage Christian and University School for the 2012-13 campaign.
