This will provide students with outdoor agricultural and environmental opportunities. The 23-acre site off Second Street includes land for future pasture and/or row crops, a native wetland area and a stream. A fish pond will be added and used for Advanced Aquatics coursework with Instructor Lisaann Hampton. These additions to the KSD campus will promote the collaboration in multiple content areas. Also, local schools will be allowed to “field trip”to the area for outdoor experiences. Students will be able to develop environmental stewardship skills along with true agricultural technical skills. “Our goal is to provide our students with hands-on real world plant and animal experiences that are man- ageable, purposeful and sustainable” says Ms. Smock. KSD owns roughly 70 acres of green space in down-town Danville. Most of it hasn’t been used by the school for agricultural purposes in many years and is currently deemed “surplus land.” “It’s been a slow process obtaining the 23 acre space for student agri-science experiences. But now that this portion of the land has been “ear-marked” for the AgriScience project, students can work in a collaborative effort in their own “backyard” says Ms. Smock. KSD Principal Rodney Buis and new KSD Campus Manager Tracy Wilson-Carroll are credited with bringing this opportunity to our students. FFA President and senior Andrew Akers is anxious to begin this expansion before graduating from KSD in May. Currently we are looking for community partners to collaborate on the planning and develop- ment of this green space. It is our hopes that in early spring we will have a clear plan for ground use, crop selection and design for outdoor learning. The KSD Agriculture Department is request- ing ideas, offers of support, and experience from local businesses and community members. Without equipment such as a tractor and implements for the land, and benches, tables and a pavilion for the outdoor classroom this project will remain a goal and not become a reality. Local businesses and community members are invited to contact Sandy Smock (Ag-Ed instructor) at 859-239-6806 or through email at [email protected] . It is our hope, that with the support of the community, expansion of this project will continue. All donations to the KSD AgriScience project are tax deductible. The contributors will be recognized with Company Logos or individual names displayed on the AgriScience premises. Long term plans for the AgriScience Farm are in the early stages and will be developed by all the various stakeholders and our com- munity partners. As a matter of fact, we don’t have anything but green space… but with that, “the possibilities are endless” says Ms. Smock. Mr. Buis and Ms. Smock have watched the growth of various KY high school Agri-science programs. There is a common vision to bring an innovative program like that to Deaf & Hard of Hearing students at Kentucky School for the Deaf. NEW KSD AGRI-SCIENCE PROJECT (June 7-9, 2011) KSD FFA members attended the 2011 Kentucky FFA Convention in Lexington, Kentucky. KSD has the 2nd Deaf FFA Chapter in the nation following West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. Three students attended the convention all three days blending in well with stu- dents from across the state. The conventions theme was “Embrace the Challenge” and that’s just what our students did. It was a real motivator and made for a very special trip for our students. Students in attendance were President: Tyler Watts, Recreation Committee Chair: Amber Sullivan and Austin Bridgeman. These students really enjoyed themselves and represented KSD well. KSD ATTENDS KENTUCKY FFA CONVENTION The Kentucky FFA Foundation and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture provided KSD a grant, for the second year, to further develop the polyculture systems on campus. This project is collaboration between the KSD Agriculture and Science Departments. In a cross-curricular col- laborative effort, Sandy Smock, KSD Ag-Ed and Lisaann Hampton, KSD Secondary Science Instructor received a check for $3,000. Last year, these same grant providers awarded this same project $2,000. This funding provides further expansion of the aquaculture system and allows for the implementation of an aquaponics system. These systems, for the benefit of student success and real-world learning, are located in the new Polyculture Learning Center on KSD’s campus. The aquaponics system, growing lettuce, herbs and water plants, will provide students with opportunities to explore the relationships and benefits of aquaculture and hydroponics as one system.
