grasslands and plant-breeding research stations; and numerous centers for

medical, agricultural, and veterinary research. Medical research focuses on the

study of leprosy and tuberculosis. The National Council for Science and

Technology advises the government on scientific matters, and the Kenya

National Academy of Sciences promotes advancement of learning and research;

both organizations were founded in Nairobi in 1977. The University of Nairobi,

founded in 1956, has colleges of agriculture and veterinary sciences, health

sciences, architecture and engineering, and biological and physical sciences.

environmental education. Moi University, founded in 1984 in Eldoret, has

faculties of forest resources and wildlife administration, science, technology,

Edgerton University, founded in 1939 at Njoro, has faculties of agriculture and

science. Other higher-education institutions include Jomo Kenyatta University

College of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya Medical Training College, and

Kenya Polytechnic, all in Nairobi, and five other institutes of science and

technology elsewhere in the country. In 1987–97, science and engineering

students accounted for 19% of college and university enrollments.

University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi (UON) is the largest university in Kenya. Although its history as an educational institution goes back to 1956, it did not become an independent university until 1970 when the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the University of Nairobi.

In 2002 the University had some 22,000 students, of whom 17,200 were undergraduates and 4,800 postgraduates.The university has launched several policy frameworks and introduced module 2 degrees to cope with the demand of higher education in Kenya.

What future holds for science technology in Kenya

However, other disciplines of science especially physics are yet to be realized in the Kenyan Universities and other institutions of higher learning. Such fields includes Accelerator physics, large hadron physics (LHC), Linear Collider Physics, Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD, Computational Physics (CP), Higher Energies and Low Energies.

Apart from the above disciplines there is no equipment to carry out experimental physics related to areas like At Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE), Supersymmetry (SUSY), At Televetron Large Symmetry (ATLAS).

Again there is no infrastructure to handle such large experiments even if they acquire equipment today. Trained experts in such areas are needed and with the help of CERN, FERMILAB, ICTP, IAEA , ECT, among other organizations we can make it.
