Le Palais Idéal is an 85-foot-long, 33-foot-high castle located south of Lyon made from rocks that a 19th-century French postman picked up during his mail route over the course of 34 years. Even though the mailman had no formal architecture training, he built the castle himself including the pillars, grottoes, and flying buttresses. Today, the massive structure still stands and visitors still go see it today.

Malabar Muslims are enriched with their own literary tradition written in ‘Arabi-Malayalam’ language and Mappila Pattu is the poetic genre of this great literary tradition. Noted singer Peer Mohammed who is

synonymous to Mappila songs passed away today at his Muzhappilangad home in Kannur due to age related illness. He was 75. Interestingly, Peer played an active role in popularizing Mappilapattu across God’s Own Country. Hailing from Surandai in Tenkasi district, he migrated to Thalassery in Kannur alongwith his father.He started singing songs at the age of four and

had his first song recorded at the age of seven. In a career spanning several decades, he had sung more than thousands of songs. He also organised several Mappilapattu shows and shared the stage with famous Mappilapattu artist VM Kutty. Eminent poet Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon had once praised Peer Mohammad for his excellent vocal skills. He was a member of the Janata Troupe with friends and later started his own troupe in Thalassery. Contemporaries regard him as one of the pioneers in Mappila songs.

According to sources, Mappilappattu is a song which depicts the cultural tradition of Muslim community especially from north Malabar. These songs come with a blend of Kerala’s folk songs and Arabic musical tradition and have been influenced by both oral and written tradition of the region. The practice of Mappila songs happened along with a parallel literary tradition prevalent in Malayalam language, Manipravalam (literary style with a mixture of Sanskrit and Malayalam).Malappattu – songs in praise of pious personalities,

Urudi – songs telling the events of war, Viruthangal – songs in praise of god, Kissukal – songs narrating the stories of prophets of Islam, Khessukal – romantic ballads, Marriage songs are the different kinds of Mappila songs popular in Kerala.
