38 Moment in Time

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We try to make our photo shoots fun—regular people usually seem so uncomfortable at the very thought of being photographed. Making it playful helps take that edge off.

This one was especially fun for me. I love the idea of my sweet friend Tori and her mother Lorna partnering on a new venture.

As soon as I posted the cover on facebook, a number of people recognized the tree immediately. Do you?

We'd like to give a special thanks to the folks at By The River RV Park for allowing us to spend the afternoon underneath their giant old cypress on the banks of the beautiful Guadalupe.

And we wish Lorna and Tori the utmost success with their new 830 Boutique.

A tortfeasor is someone who commits a tort. For instance, drivers who are the liable party in a car accident are tortfeasors. In most cases, the tortfeasor’s liability insurance carrier will represent them under the terms of the automobile liability policy. It is the liability insurance carrier’s responsibility to settle the claim any injured parties may have against the tortfeasor. If the tortfeasor needs a lawyer, the insurance company will likely provide legal counsel to represent the tortfeasor’s interest against the injured party.

What about the injured party? The injured party normally doesn’t have any prepaid assistance because there is none built into the legal system.

There is no provision in Texas law that allows an injured party in a car accident to recover attorney fees from the tortfeasor. If you can’t agree with the liability carrier claims adjuster on the amount of your settlement of all claims, your only alternative is to sue the tortfeasor. You can only sue the tortfeasor and you cannot sue the liability insurance carrier. In fact, if you do end up in court against the tortfeasor, you cannot tell the jury there is a liability insurance carrier involved who may be liable for the amount of all or part of a judgment the jury may award.

This information is intentionally withheld from the jury in our legal system to discourage large jury verdicts. In theory, this

saves the general public a few dollars on their insurance bill every year. In reality, a lot of times, this leaves the injured parties short of their needed and just recovery, even when there is insurance money there to pay for the injury. The insurance liability carriers use these legal advantages to settle some claims for a lot less than an equitable amount. The playing field is not equal without professional help on your side.

Although reimbursement for attorney fees is not an option for the injured party, personal injury attorneys will take these types of cases on a contingency arrangement. There is no set arrangement, but typically a personal injury attorney will take a case, under the right circumstances, for a fee of one third (1/3) of the recovered amount. Obviously, if there is no recovery, there cannot be a fee. That is why not every case is a candidate for a contingency fee arrangement as the risks are very high for the attorney. All of the attorney’s work could go unrewarded.

These percentages can increase depending upon the stage of recovery. For instance, if the case has to go to trial, because the insurance company will not settle, the attorney contract may call for a larger percentage of the recovered amount. To account for the extra money needed to compensate the lawyer out of the recovery amount, a personal injury attorney looks for cases that could include what is known as “pain and suffering.” Under Texas tort law, injured parties may recover, at trial, a subjective amount of money for the pain and suffering that could reasonably result from the injuries. Claims adjusters may take a claim for “pain and suffering” into account in settlement negotiations, avoiding

litigation, but it is not likely to happen without an attorney involved.

The percentages for contingent attorney contracts don’t always work out for the injured party in every case. Sometimes, accepting the liability carriers low ball offer may be more economical for the injured party than hiring a personal injury lawyer on contingency. If you become the injured party in a car accident, you want to at talk to a personal injury attorney about your rights and your case before accepting a settlement offer.

After a long hiatus from bird feeding—mostly squirrel feeding, really—I decided to feed again. Why now? Kevin and Linda Pillow’s regular birding column in this magazine said that squirrels don’t eat safflower seed. While I adore watching the cute little squirrels, they empty feeders faster than I can fill them

Within a few weeks of hanging just one safflower-filled feeder, my back yard seemed magically filled with dozens of birds. Since I enjoyed them so much, I decided it was time to branch out—my ultimate goal is to attract the most colorful birds, like the painted bunting.

The first thing I did was a Google search and then suddenly realized that was ridiculous. The wiser choice was to email my friend Linda—who I fondly refer to as the Bird Woman of Kerrville—and ask for her expertise.

Linda responded with, “I’ll come with a bottle of wine.” So we sat at my dining table enjoying a nice bottle of Argentine Malbec, while Linda detailed what I needed to do to create a bird haven outside my dining room window.

“The most important thing,” Linda began, “is water. You must keep fresh water at all times. And the right feeders with the right foods to attract the birds you want.”

Pretty basic on Linda’s list is the fabulous Eliminator™ squirrel-proof feeder. The Eliminator™ works because the weight of the would-be-dining squirrel closes the feeding ports. Wow. This really excites me.

Yes, it’s a little pricey, but in the long run, the money saved on not feeding squirrels is well worth it.

Next I discovered that a sock feeder is perfect for finches. “The finches will just hang all over it,” Linda explained. “You’ll need hot pepper suet—titmice, woodpeckers, and warblers love it.” Hot pepper? Evidently it’s not hot to the birds.

Linda informed me that not all birds eat seed, so to attract a wider variety—such as Orioles, Bluebirds, and hummingbirds—use fruit, nectar, and mealworms. Oh, no. No mealworms for me. Yuck. They have to be

refrigerated and since I only have one fridge, I just can’t bring myself to open it and see a tub of worms between my yogurt and eggs.

If you can handle the mealworms (no pun intended), they really are an important addition to your bird-feeding plan. Linda and Kevin say that it’s possible to attract about 50 bird species to a backyard. I’ll be thrilled if I get half that. I will be ecstatic the day my first painted bunting arrives.

If you want to attract more birds, skip the trial and error and call my friends Linda and Kevin at Wild Birds Unlimited—and be sure to read their column in each issue of this magazine (see page 34 for contact information).

Special thanks to my friend, Mack Barham of Hunt, Texas for allowing us to use his fabulous bird photos.

addition to floral arrangements of fabulous traditional and exotic fresh flowers, The Rose Shop can help you choose that ideal plant and then dress it up in a beautiful basket or ceramic container garnished with a handmade bow. Speaking of baskets, with Easter on March 31, now is the time to order a glorious basket full of your choice of flowers, plants, and gourmet items—perhaps even a plush bunny.

“And don’t forget Mama,” Karen says with a laugh. “Mother’s Day will be here before you know it and it’s absolutely our busiest time of year.” Mama not in town? No problem, The Rose Shop wires orders anywhere through Teleflora and FTD services. Good to know for other out of town events, as well.

“These days we’re traveling ourselves all over the Hill Country, including Austin,” continues Karen, “mostly for weddings.” The Rose Shop is the go-to source of floral consultations for your wedding and other festive events. “I especially enjoy sitting down with young brides and helping them create the perfect wedding.”

Additionally, The Rose Shop works on a regular basis with local Churches to provide their sanctuaries with praise-worthy floral arrangements. “And if there’s a death of a loved one, we can assist you with funeral home and cemetery floral needs as well,” Karen offers.

“Whatever the occasion, we create unique floral arrangements with our clients’ needs in mind,” Karen says as she slides pink silk peony and ranunculus stems alongside peacock

feathers around the full height of a four-foot bamboo stalk. “And we welcome people to bring us that special vase or heirloom bowl to create a lasting treasure with artificial flowers and foliage.” The Rose Shop also can work its magic to artistically re-invent that faded silk arrangement you just can’t bear to throw away.

Karen brings a wealth of experience to her business—nearly thirty-five years. She and husband Terry bought The Rose Shop in 2005, but Karen has worked for the company since 1979, back when folks knew the shop as Kerrville Florist and Gifts. “It surprises even me that I’ve been at this for so long—but I really love working with flowers and bringing the outdoors inside,” explains Karen.

Let The Rose Shop exceed your expectations with quality, value, and professional service. Call Karen now to create your memorable floral fantasy.

Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) This pretty plant offers many medicinal benefits, from aiding skin wounds to sore throats. A popular treatment for colds, it helps support the body’s natural defense system and protects against viruses. Blended in a cream or salve, it fights fungus and infection, and can soothe eczema and psoriasis.

10 You Can GrowYourself

by Skye Alexander Peppermint This easy-to-grow and refreshing herb brings welcome relief from coughs, head colds, sinus problems, and nasal congestion––especially if you inhale the fragrant steam from peppermint tea. The dried leaves steeped in water make a delicious, soothing tea that can aid stomach upsets and diges-tion. Use it as an effective and tasty mouthwash, too, as well as a mild antiseptic and stimulant.

1

Marigold (Calendula)You can prepare a lotion or poultice with the golden flow-ers of this popular annual and apply it to skin to take the sting out of burns (including sunburn), scrapes, and minor irritations. Marigold’s anti-inflammatory action promotes healing while soothing damaged skin. And as every gardener knows, the plant also repels insect pests

Healing Herbs

18 │ Mar-Apr 2013 │ KCP

Now that spring has sprung and gardening season has arrived, consider planting medicinal herbs among your flowers and veggies. Many herbs grow well in the Texas Hill Country, provide culinary as well as therapeutic benefits, and bloom beautifully.

For thousands of years, herbs were the mainstay of physicians and healers throughout the world. Ancient Greek, Egyptian, Persian, and Chinese practitioners perfected the art of herbcraft. During the Renaissance, herbs were cultivated in Europe’s monasteries and castles, as well as the gardens of common people. Colonial homemakers grew medicinal herbs––beloved plants they’d brought with them from the old country, as well as new remedies the Native Americans had introduced to them. Early in the nineteenth century, the Shakers built a thriving mail-order business, supplying herbs to pharmacists all over America.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, one-third of Americans today use herbal remedies. With herbal medicine gaining popularity again, you may want to try growing and preparing your own inexpensive, natural remedies. You can enjoy these ten common herbs for both their aesthetic and therapeutic properties. Of course, you’ll want to consult with your doctor before you start using these botanicals.

For more information, contact the Herb Research Foundation <www.herbs.org> or the International Herb Association <www.iherb.org>

Skye Alexander is the author of more than thirty books, many in the body-mind-spirit field.

Garlic Prized by cooks for its distinctive flavor, garlic is also a blood toner. It promotes the healthy development of beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract, making it useful for many gastric complaints. Garlic enthusiasts also recommend it for lowering blood pressure, preventing infections, and healing respiratory ailments.

Hops Added to beer as both a flavoring and a natural preservative, hops also help to calm the nervous system. When ingested, the flowers ease tension and anxiety, making hops a popular remedy for insomnia and stress-related headaches. You can also use hardy hops as an effective digestive aid for an upset stomach caused by worry or nervousness.

Lavender This fragrant and beautiful flower possesses mild antiseptic properties. Infused in water, lavender makes a soothing and sweet-smelling skin tonic that’s especially beneficial in treating blemishes and eczema. This Texas favorite also effectively repels insects. Added to bathwater, lavender calms stress, eases sore muscles, and can even bring relief to rheumatism sufferers.

Parsley This popular culi-nary herb and garnish contains vitamin C, calcium, iron, and beta-carotene. Eat it raw to freshen your breath. Because of its diuretic action, parsley can help reduce unwanted water retention; however, pregnant women should consume it only in small amounts.

Mustard The tiny seeds of the mustard plant when ground and mixed with water make a stimulating compress or poultice to aid circulation. Often used as a remedy for colds and fevers, mustard seeds sprinkled in bathwater can also soothe sore muscles, aches, and minor arthritic pain.

Rosemary This easy-to-grow, deer-resistant plant offers relief from headaches, dizziness, and nervous tension. Steep the herb in hot water to brew a natural, therapeutic tea. Or, blend the leaves and with olive oil to treat dandruff and itchy scalp.

4

Chamomile A favorite digestive aid, tea made from chamomile flowers is one of the oldest remedies for upset stomachs and intestinal complaints. You can also gargle with this anti-inflammatory herbal tea to soothe sore throats and cold sores in the mouth. Drought-tolerant chamomile’s pleasant aroma and gentle, relaxing properties make it an ideal natural sedative––the perfect “nightcap” to drink at bedtime.

At most salons you’ll be offered a selec-tion of different products to enhance and preserve your hair, colored or not. If you don’t want to wash your pricey color down the drain, might I suggest Pureology. After paying to get that perfect shade with subtle highlights and just the right amount of gleam why would you put harsh, sodium-packed products on your hair? If you want your investment to last, use what your styl-ist recommends. A stunning silk blouse that costs $200— would you dream of throwing it in the washer with hot water and laundry soap? Perish the thought! You would most likely protect your investment by paying to have it cleaned properly. Now this

blouse may get worn 3 or 4 times a month whereas you wear your hair every day. Take care of it. Don’t slap any old thing on it. Nurture it, love it.

Pureology is a 100% vegan, sulfate-free line of products that does just that, loves the hair. They offer several different lines for different hair types, but all are for use on color treated hair. Pureology also is one of the only hair care lines that offers a 100% money back guarantee. Check out

their website and take the hair product quiz to see which line is best for you. The Tin Star Salon offers Pureology at the most reasonable prices in town. We also carry a few other select hair care lines to maintain beautiful hair.

Stop in and see why the Tin Star has been making heads beautiful for 20 years! Katie, Christi, Jeanne, Mario and Gale are here to make you look fantastic!

With 20 years in the beauty industry, Katie is the owner and a stylist at Tin Star Salon at 319 Earl Garrett in Kerrville.Call her at 895-5030.

BEFORE AFTER

As seen on Dr. Oz and Good Morning America

Your skin is capable of healing, regenerating and growing its own new cells. Growth factors are proteins that play an important role in aiding your skin’s natural ability to repair damage caused by the effects of aging. They are also the key ingredient for the extensive line of skin repair, protection and rejuvenation products by SkinMedica.

Bella Luz is excited to announce we have added the innovative SkinMedica line to help our clients speed their way to obtaining that famous Bella Glow. The SkinMedica products work synergistically with your own body to provide optimal benefits in the shortest period of time.

SkinMedica products are offered exclusively through medical practices and medically supervised spas, like Bella Luz. The products are best used in the care and supervision of a skin care professional. This ensures that the right combinations of SkinMedica products are used for your specific skin type and needs.

One of the SkinMedica products is the Lytera Skin Brightening System. Lytera attacks skin discolorations that are imperfections that appear as dark spots on the skin.

This is a simple, yet effective, comprehensive brightening system that is easy to use. It includes a facial cleanser, Lytera Skin Brightening Complex, a retinol and a sunscreen. Clinical studies show improvements in as early as four weeks with significant reductions at twelve weeks and continuous reductions over six months.

Late last year, Allergan (producers of Botox and Juvederm) bought privately held SkinMedica for $350 million, and intend to run the company as a separate business in an effort to expand its skin care offerings.

That is great news for users of Botox and Juvederm since Allergan has a generous loyalty program that can earn discounts and other valuable benefits. The SkinMedica products will be included in the program.

The SkinMedica line of products is extensive—much too long to list here. So, what do we do at Bella when we have great new products to show our clients? We have a party to reveal our new baby—a Sip and See themed party! (Sip some wine and See what SkinMedica can do to help you glow.)

This will be a dandy! We will have reps from SkinMedica on hand to educate everyone on the line of products, and of course there will be plenty of samples and giveaways. We are

planning the Sip and See party in May, so be sure and like our Facebook page, or make sure we have your email address, so you will know the date and time!

At Bella, we are always on the lookout for products, techniques and innovations in skin care that we can bring to our clients. The SkinMedica line of products is known nationally to be among the best of the best. That is why we are thrilled to now have the line available for the best of the best clients…you!

Call for an appointment and we will be happy to give you a personal guided tour of SkinMedica and as always…help you get your Bella Glow on!

A Recipe for SuccessTori Varwig grew up watching her mother, Lorna, work hard and happily to achieve her glowing reputation. Her recipe for success? Love. Support. Commitment. Vision. Joy. With this role model to emulate, Tori has achieved her own success with her popular restaurant Salada’s, located at 225 Earl Garrett Street in downtown Kerrville. In just four years, Salada’s has become well known for its delicious, healthy food and spectacular desserts. You can choose from a tasty menu of quiches, creative deli sandwiches, and gluten-free delights. Or, enjoy the amazing 24-foot-long salad bar loaded with fresh vegetables, pasta salads, taco salads, savory soups, and homemade breads. Do you love pizza? Try Tori’s newest addition to the lunch menu: thin-crust artisan pizzas. Her Chicken Alfredo pizza is made with creamy Alfredo sauce and her Margarita features fresh basil, tomatoes, and authentic mozzarella cheese.

As if all this yummy goodness weren’t enough reason to come to Salada’s, taste Tori’s incredible dessert creations. For the “Sweet Treats” side of Salada’s, Tori makes elegant custom wedding cakes, fun birthday and special event cakes, as well as cupcakes, cookies, brownies, lemon bars, banana bread, s’mores bars, pies, and just about anything her imagination can dream up. One happy young customer, Bianca Garcia, ten-year-old daughter of Laura Garcia, owner of Grand Wows Furniture Consignment store in Ingram, says, “We get all my birthday cakes at Salada’s! My favorite is strawberry with lemon curd filling.” And if ice cream is your favorite treat, try the old-fashioned soda fountain concoctions––malts, floats, milk shakes, and banana splits––made with Blue Bell ice cream.

Tori and Lorna invite you to love shopping and dining in downtown Kerrville, and are offering a sweet deal to encourage you to visit all their businesses. If you dine at Salada’s, you’ll receive 10 percent off your purchase at The 830 Boutique. And if you purchase something at “830” you’ll get a 10-percent discount at Salada’s.

Salada’s, at 225 Earl Garrett, is open Monday through Wednesday from 11 to 3, Thursday through Saturday from 11 to 4, and Sunday from 11 to 2. For more information call 830-896-0107.

It’s that time of year when we are so sick of looking at our things all winter long that we start to talk about changing our look. Instead of replac-ing your furniture you might entertain the thought of just changing up some of your pillows. Pillows can be an easy and relatively inexpensive way to achieve a new look. Here are some of my favorite tips on what can be done with pillows.

Mix things up. Don’t be afraid to be bold in this department. As I wrote in an earlier issue, pillows are to your room what ear-rings are to an outfit. This is also a great place to think outside the box. Pillows can be made from dishtowels, rugs, a silk shirt or scarf—any material that you love.

Varying the sizes of accent pillows creates a pleasing change of scale for visual interest. Pillows in one uniform size are bor-ing. You can mix square pillows with lumbar pillows or other shapes, varying from 18 to22 inches.

It’s always better to mix and not match. Try mixing pillows that have a neutral base with pillows that have bright florals or pat-terns that have hints of the same accent color. You can mix pat-terns, solids and textures and put the same cording on all the pillows to tie the look together without being matchy-matchy.

As always, the most important thing is to find patterns and prints that speak to your style and have fun with it.

Laura Garcia received her degree in Interior Design from Savannah College of Art & Design. WATER?Recently, the City of Kerrville released a Public Notification regarding a violation of the Total Trihalomethane Maximum Contaminate Level. Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) represent a group of chemicals that are formed as byproducts of chlorine mixing with organic matter in water during the treatment process.

The chief components of TTHMs are bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, bromoform and chloroform. Now, most people don’t know what all those big words mean; but we recognize chloroform. These chemicals have been linked to health problems relating to the liver and kidneys, as well as the central nervous system.

How can you ensureyour family’s safety?Holloway Plumbing offers a Free Water Analysis, and can check your water’s hardness, pH levels, etc. We will evaluate your lifestyle and address your concerns; and can create a customized water treatment solution developed to fit your needs and budget.

Concerned about increased sodiumfrom a traditional softener? Not to worry…there are several different treatment options available that do not use salt. If your plants could talk, they would be screaming for nutrition. Most perennials, trees, and grasses come out of dormancy this time of year, so it’s time to fertilize. The most important feeding months are March, April, and May.

When it comes to fertilizer, what you fertilize with is not always as important as just making sure you do it. Many fertilizers are plant-specific and will work better on some plants than others.

A good long-lasting fertilizer is a great investment to keep your plants happy

and healthy. Just like people, when plants don’t have enough nutrition they become stressed, and more prone to disease and insects. Generally water-mixed fertilizer only feeds for a short period of time, great for a quick pick me up but that’s about it.

Just like most chemical fertilizers that feed your plants, once the plant has taken it up, it’s gone. An organic fertilizer is usually the better choice—for your plants and the environment. Organic fertilizers not only fertilize your plants, but the soil, too. That way when your plant needs more nutrition the soil will release it. Let ‘em eat!

When driving through Kerrville,it is hard to miss the many yards marked with signs declaring a home for sale. In recent conversations with real estate professionals, I have often heard comments relating to the large inventory we have on the market. This is wonderful news for those interested in purchasing a home, but this abundant supply often leaves sellers in a difficult position. A recent article I ready online provided some of following tips from real estate professionals and individuals who have recently sold them homes:

Be Clutter FreeWhen we found out we were going to move, I followed the best advice given to us: Make your house look like a very comfortable, expensive hotel room—clean, uncluttered and not like anyone else has been there. We rented a storage unit and moved most belongings into it and cleared out the closets, leaving only those clothes we would need for two weeks.

Create Online Appeal The loveliest home doesn’t have a chance with the poor photography. This is the impression of your home for many buyers. Trying to make out details in dark, blurry photos when there are a lot of other listings to look at could have a very negative effect.

Look at Curb Appeal Does the curb need to have sand, dirt or pebbles swept clean? Does have leaves, cigarette butts or other debris? Are there weeds or grass growing in the cracks of your sidewalks?Wash down the exterior of your house. You don’t necessarily need to rent a power washer. A hose and broom and some dishwashing cleanser work great.

Think About Color It’s good to have some color in your home. However, don’t use colors that look like they’ll take three coats of primer and three coats of paint to cover up.

Tenebrio Molitor. Mealworms. Caviar to nesting birds. Don’t be squeamish. Serving mealworms will bring a wider variety of birds to your backyard—especially nesting birds. Since we’re in the midst of nesting season in the Hill Country, now is a fabulous time to start.

All of your birds are searching for live food right now, which provides the protein they crave to begin nesting. The male will often feed mealworms to the female during courting. However, the main event is taking live mealworms back to the nest for hatchlings to feast on. Many “parents” will come to your feeder and will load their beaks to capacity until they have depleted the feeder. They’ll continue to feed mealworms to their fledglings too. It’s amazing to watch this event unfold right on your patio.

Most every bird will come to mealworms, though you will probably see more insect-eating birds that usually don’t come to seed feeders. The most popular bird that enjoys mealworms is the wren, but many, many others will come too. Bluebirds, painted buntings, chickadees, orioles, flycatchers…the list goes on and on.

Mealworms are best found at your local bird store where they come in fresh every other week and are nice and healthy. They come in a container with air holes and bran. You keep them in the fridge—or the fridge in the garage—where they stay dormant. You then place a couple of forkfuls in a slick sided dish, preferably at the same time each day. You can play like you’re Pavlov, and tap your fork on the side of the dish each time so as to signal to the birds that it’s dinner time. Birds just can’t resist a bowl full of squirming mealworms!

Serving mealworms near a window where you can watch is some of the most fun you will have feeding the birds this spring.

Happy Birding!

Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote that in spring a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of love…I’m no poet, but from what I’ve seen, young men’s fancies turn to thoughts of love 365 days a year. However, for us older folks (older than 17), spring means a fresh start, a new season of color and hope. An opportunity to put on the work gloves, go out in the yard, and start landscaping.

With dirt clods flying, weeds cowering, and your spouse looking at you like you’ve lost your mind, you suddenly look around and realize you are trying to do 10 things at once. Take it easy, Killer, you’ve got 9 more months of growing season. Why don’t we take a break, pat ourselves on the back, and go back to the drawing board…

Planning pays offPlanning ahead is essential in all areas of life: from financial matters to building a home, and of course providing the perfect setting for that home. You would never begin building a house without a detailed set of plans, yet many people wait until the building is finished and suddenly realize they haven’t even thought about their outdoor living spaces. Begin your landscape design along with site planning for your house.

If you decide to do your own planning, make a list of your landscape priorities. Start a sketch that denotes hardscaping (walkways, structures, patios, etc.). Then fill in shrub beds, groundcover areas, lawn, and wildflower/native areas. Browse neighborhoods, magazines, and the internet, looking for styles and components you like. But be careful of non-local sources, as what they have done may not work here in the Hill

Country. As always, local knowledge can be priceless.

Even if you decide to work with a landscape designer, none of this process would be wasted. The more information you can give a landscape professional in sketches, pictures, and ideas, the more efficiently and successfully they can implement a plan that reflects your ideas and goals. Our 3-D “Virtual Landscaping” can help you visualize your landscape before we even start! As our design fees are based on an hourly rate, the more homework you do, the less you will be charged.

If you have a local architect, ask them for a recommendation for a landscape designer that they are comfortable working with.

Landscape remodelMost of you reading this column already have a home and may think you don’t need a landscape plan. If your existing landscaping is looking a little worse for the wear, you may consider a landscape remodel or at least a renewed plant scheme with drought tolerant plants. Don’t fall into the trap of picking out whatever looks good at the moment, bringing it home and throwing it in the ground. This is where a landscape designer is valuable: re-thinking, re-designing, and re-viving problem areas. Don’t start work until you have a complete plan; otherwise the end result will look hodge-podge and pieced together. Even if you can only do one phase at a time, start with the end in mind.

In 2008, shortly after Salada’s opened, I reviewed the restaurant and was most pleased. Then, as now, one can enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet of over 50 salad items, breads, soups, baked potatoes, tacos, and desserts.

I always enjoy visits to this clean and friendly restaurant. It’s been a pleasure watching Tori Varwig, owner and manager, expand her business. The menu has grown to include quiche plates, meatloaf and cold or hot specialty sandwiches. And don’t forget “Sweet Treats,” the great little bakery within Salada’s.

My wife recently enjoyed the quiche plate served with a bowl of soup and a small green salad. I had to sample her Quiche Lorraine and the Cream of Jalapeno Soup. Great! I tried the Salada’s Ultimate Burger. Don’t expect a frozen patty here. The large homemade patty served on a jalapeno-cheese sourdough bun, topped with lettuce, tomato and red onion will delight all burger lovers. It was well seasoned and presented with a choice of chips or a side salad. My recommendation—order one next time—especially if you’re really hungry.

On another visit my wife ordered the Curried Cranberry Chicken Salad. It is always one of her favorites, and maybe it will become one of yours as well. I had the Premium Roast Beef “French Dip” with grilled onions and Swiss cheese on cibatta bread and served with a side of au jus. This has become my personal favorite.

Of course, I love Tori’s soups, especially the Cream of Jalapeno and the Tortilla Soup when the weather is cool. In the summer the chilled Strawberry Soup and the Cucumber Soup are refreshing and delicious.

Salada’s is a great place to take family, friends, and business associates for a casual, relaxing meal. With so many choices, there is something for everyone.

PRMC Volunteers

When you think “hospital volunteer,” do you think of a sweet little lady in tennis shoes and a turquoise vest? Well, think again.Peterson Regional Medical Center is proud of their gentlemen volunteers—eighteen to be exact— from a total of 85 volunteers. With poise and smiles these guys perform varied duties for patients and staff; some even work other volunteer jobs such as home health, Meals on Wheels, hospice, and the library. Most are retired, but one enjoys a part-time job and juggles his work hours with his hospital shift.

Backgrounds are varied—from food broker, insurance specialist, health care, computer information specialist, and a police officer

to a B-52 Bomber pilot, retail managers and one or two vice presidents. Several have wives who also volunteers.

If you would enjoy joining this elite group, give me a call or stop by my office on the first floor of Peterson Regional Medical Center. We have a place for you on our team.

Judy Jones-Amason is the Volunteer Coordinator and Patient Representative for Peterson Regional Medical Center. (PRMC) has taken a giant step toward improving the health of newborns and infants by earning the Texas Ten Step facility designation from the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Hospital Association.

The Texas Ten Step Program encourages breastfeeding as the preferred method of feeding for newborns and infants. Peterson joins a growing number of Texas birth facilities that are supporting new mothers and their decision to breastfeed.

Based on the World Health Organization (WHO)/UNICEF’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the program aims to assist birth facility’s support of breastfeeding mothers before, during, and after delivery; encourages them to identify breastfeeding resources for the mother after she is discharged; and encourages facilities to reach the Healthy People 2020 goal of having 82 percent of mothers exclusively breastfeeding when they go home with their newborn.

Texas Ten Step facilities are asked to address 85% of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, be designated as a Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite, evaluate their breastfeeding policies, maternity care practices and educate all healthcare staff routinely with evidence-based courses.

“Our nurses, midwives, and doctors have worked on this project intensely for six months to raise breastfeeding rates and provide a healthy start for new moms and babies,” said Tina Korbelik, Director of Women’s Services at Peterson. “We are very pleased that our

breastfeeding rates increased over the years and that we have now earned the Texas Ten Step designation. We now join a select group of other Texas hospitals, only 80 total, recognized for promoting breastfeeding to new mothers.”

For more information on the Texas Ten Step Program, call Veronica Hendrix, Program Coordinator at (512) 341-4592, or visit the web site at www.texastenstep.org. To learn more about Peterson’s Women’s Services contact Tina Korbelik (830) 258-7415.

Breastfeeding your baby is an excellent way to give them a healthy start. Mother’s milk is much easier for your baby to digest and has the nutrition and protective elements they need to thrive. Nursing allows physical contact to help create that special bond between mom and baby. Nursing also can help you shed pregnancy weight faster and is much less expensive.

Pregnancy to Parenting Peterson Regional Medical Center offers classes and events year-round for all stages of life. Our classes offered at Peterson’s Baby Place are new and improved! To learn more, call 830-258-7444, or you can visit us at www.petersonrmc.com

Peterson RMC Appeals toWomen from Pregnancy to Parenthood

The Peterson Baby Place staff is experienced and trained to help you be comfortable and confident as you begin breastfeeding your newborn.

Steps to Successful Breastfeeding• Practice breastfeeding lying down so

you can feed and rest, you will learn better when not tired.

• Make sure your baby feeds at least 8 times a day. Feedings may be bunched together, wake baby if needed.

• Ask where you can get breastfeeding help if needed.

• Breastfeed whenever your baby wants to. You will know its time when your baby turns his/her head, turns from side to side with an open mouth, or when he/she puts their hands to their mouth.

• Don’t wait until your baby fusses or cries to feed, when upset, its harder to feed well.

• If breastfeeding hurts, get help. A small change in how your baby takes the breast may be all you need to feel better.

• Find a mother’s group near you. Spend time with other breastfeeding mothers.

• Trust your baby to know the right time to feed.

• A baby usually does best on mother’s milk alone until about six months.

Could Home Health Services Take You Home?

Page 43: Kerr County People Magazine

There are specific criteria a patient must meet in order to be eligible for home health benefits through the Medicare program.

Patient must be homebound—it must be taxing and difficult for the patient to leave their home and absences from the home should be infrequent and not for long durations.

There must be a need for a skilled service—the patient’s condition is one that requires a skilled nurse to

• assess and evaluate the patient and report to the physician any changes in the patient’s condition, and/or

• provide teaching/instruction, or direct skill such as catheter care, wound care, injections/IVs, etc.

• The skilled service can also be that of a physical therapist for strengthening and endurance, home exercise program, etc. or;

• for speech therapy for treatment of stroke, etc.

The care must be medically necessary and intermittent, with an end in sight.

The attending physician must see the patient up to 90 days prior to admission or 30 days after the start of care date. The physician must document the reason for home health services and certify the patient meets the homebound criteria.

When can home healthservices be beneficial?Home health services may be beneficial to you if you have experienced one of the following.

• Onset of a new illness or exacerbation of a current illness that requires changes in your treatment.

• New medications have been started for a disease or acute illness.

• You were recently in the hospital or nursing home for an acute illness or surgery.

Who pays for home health services?Home health services are a benefit of the Medicare program. Medicare pays 100% for home health services at this time. Most other major insurance companies also pay for home health services.

Medicare does not pay for any custodial type services such as housekeeping, shopping, transportation, or companion type services.

Is solicitation of patients allowed?Absolutely not! Solicitation of patients by home health agencies is against state and federal law. Agencies cannot offer to take you to appointments for free or provide any like kind free service as an inducement to sign up for home health services.

If you or your family members believe you or a loved one could benefit from receiving home health services, you should discuss it with your attending physician. Your physician will evaluate the circumstances and if appropriate, make a referral to home health services.

Do you have a choice in selecting your home health care provider?Absolutely. Federal law guarantees freedom of choice when you need home health services. In fact, federal law says you should be given all the options available to you. You can select the home health care provider of your choice. Discuss your options with your doctor as home health care is a multidisciplinary approach to health care.

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability has a website that lists the names of home health agencies in your area. The website also indicates if the agency in a specific location is authorized to accept Medicare patients.

Who are the Peterson Pioneers?Pioneers were the first people to settle the frontiers of North America.

Pioneers often formed partnerships with other adventurous souls to ease the burden and lighten the load. Pioneers are the first to be involved; they take risks and are the first to “step up” to help others.

Since we first announced the Peterson Pioneer Program in 2010, we have raised more than $418,390 from individuals, businesses, organizations and foundations who have “stepped up” to join us. Contributions helped bring the first da Vinci Robotic Surgical System and Program to our region, provided Nursing and Educational Scholarships to caregivers, and helped purchase new equipment.

This year, we want to blaze new trails for our Women’s Services of Peterson Regional Medical Center as well as offer increased healthcare scholarships for our caregivers to expand their education. There is no greater gift we can give in our region but to help ensure exceptional, compassionate, patient-centered healthcare is available to our families, friends and neighbors.
