SUSTAINABLE HOME

Baton Rouge, LA

The Sustainable Home utilizes a central porch that bridges across outdoor and indoor spaces to emphasize the outdoors and the regional vernacular porch culture. The porch allows the interior and exterior living conditions to blur in swing seasons by opening to the environment or close in winter and summer to facilitate mechanical conditions. During desirable weather conditions, openings on opposite sides of the home offer a variety of ways to cross ventilate.

The home is clad in a rainscreen to help minimize heat gain and decrease condensation inside the envelope. The rainscreen features a reclaimed vinyl billboard vapor barrier that doubles as ornament because of its visibility through the gaps. Open or closed, the Sustainable Home facilitates desirable living conditions through various passive and active design strategies. Occupants benefit from the comfort of fresh, moving air while saving money on energy costs.

MUSEUM OF VIDEO ART

Baton Rouge, LA

Video art is presented, displayed, and experienced in many different ways. The Museum of Video Art was derived from the study of a single video art piece. Through this process, video art became transposed into the architectural design of the museum.

In flex, a video art piece by Chris Cunningham, two bodies continuously twist and shift in front of us, obstructed by shadows and a single, constantly moving source of light. The video art resulted with two struggling forms intersecting each other to form the museum. The concrete building, holding the majority of the program, responds to the urban context while the sharp adjoining form overwhelms it in a violent interlaced manner that resembles the qualities of the video art piece.

FARNAM TOWER

Omaha, NE

A skyscraper consisting of office space in downtown Omaha began as an exercise in sculpture. Using planer surfaces, a sculpture was fabricated with the intent that it resists its own presence. Through many phases the sculpture transformed into a tower while remaining true to the original purpose of the sculpture.

The office tower stands a single structure appearing as an assembly of multiple parts. Each of the parts are visible through each other with subtle bands on the surface structure stitching them together.

Rethinking Castle Pinckney

Charleston, SC

Castle Pinckney has become The Artifact of Preserving Charleston harbor fortification. By manipulating the island’s landscape, various lines of vision emerge to create an artifacting of Charleston’s fortification era. Visitors of the “museum” are introduced to the history of fortification in a fashion identical to the chronological order that attacking ships would be introduced to each defense fortress.

The Pavilions on Shute’s Folly Island are also tools to artifact the fortification tectonic and materiality of the region. The buildings are constructed of concrete and tabby, a concrete with an oyster shell aggregate that was used in construction during the fortification era. Rebar materializes from the concrete structures to create interior screens or boundaries for the traverse. In the landscape, the rebar formalizes into gabions or retaining walls to display local ecology. The artifacted traverse provokes conventional learning by maintaining an identity true to the island while becoming a signifier for the harbor defense progression.

FIELD STUDIES

Rome, Italy

While studying abroad in Rome we used drawing and observation as our primary tool for investigating the great spaces of the city, uncoupling the image of form from its organizing structure and resulting space. For ten weeks we produced a series of analytical drawings that recorded observations, layering different views and extracting lessons about space, rhythm, change over time, and hierarchy.
