Commentary: We can't seem to get away from government reports that affect the markets, dramatically. Last week I wrote about the USDA planting intensions and grain stocks. I sent the market skyward due to its negative overall outlook for agricultural markets. Last Friday, the jobs number came out and it was not great. The unemployment rate fell, but this was due to people completely leaving the workforce. So, naturally, futures were hit with a negative blow, and will likely put traders on the defensive selling much of their long positions. This may be seen as good since it will drive futures down and speculators will take profits. Also driving futures down, is demand. Demand is seen as down for corn, and the soybean complex which is likely caused by increased fuel costs where consumers are not spending as much on meals away from home. The NPD group released a report that shows consumers cutting back on restaurant use, for both financially sound customers as well as financially strained customers. They also sighted meal deals and health conscientiousness for reasons for less restaurant visits. This week, the USDA will release another report which will most likely move the market. The World Agricultural Supply and Demand report will come out this week. It is likely to be a bullish report with South American production suffering their poor harvest and infrastructure woes, but U.S demand may keep this news in check. Corn futures closed between $6.55 and $6.58-1/4 per bushel, ending the week at $6.58-14. Soybean futures closed between $14.16-3/4 and $14.34 per bushel, ending the week at $14.34. Soybean meal futures closed between $386.50 and $391.90 per short ton, ending the week at $391.90. Soybean oil futures closed between $0.5590 and $0.5664 per pound, ending the week at $0.5664. Wheat futures closed between $6.38-01/2 and $6.58 per bushel, ending the week at $6.58.
