No.5 - Friday 31 July Principal’s Message Tena Koutou Katoa Dear Parents / Caregivers This term has begun with some changes in staffing. At the end of last term we fare-welled Mrs Sarah Forward who has moved back to her hometown of Christchurch and Mr Cameron Smith who has taken up a position at Scots College. Both teachers have given great service to the school. In their place we welcome Mr Danny Dyer who has joined us from the Coromandel and Ms Kathleen Beckett who will join us next week from Mana College. Also joining us at the start of term is our new Learning Support teacher and SENCO, Ms Andrea Hay. Ms Hay has come from Christchurch. Next week we welcome a new Photography/Art teacher, from Sacred Heart College, Ms Faith Sayer. All of these teachers are experienced teachers and it is great that we are able to attract excellent teachers to our school. Ms Aroha Blakeborough gave birth to a baby boy at the end of the school holidays. We are delighted for her and her partner and wish them well in this exciting stage of their lives. Whaea has taken maternity leave a couple of weeks earlier than planned and this has been a position, that despite advertising, we have had difficulty filling. Happily it looks that we will make a good appointment and that a new teacher will begin in the next few weeks. Principal’s Message continued from page 1

The result of all of these changes is that there have been a number of classes with relief teachers for the start of term. Most classes should return to normal over the next week or two. Thanks to our finance staff who are steadily getting our reporting systems back into a good state. We look on-track to having our financial systems working as they should and being completely up-to-date by the end of term. You will have received accounts for the year-to-date and this should now take place each term. One issue that arises out of this that the Board will be discussing at its next meeting is the amount of debt that we are carrying. We understand that school expenses are a challenge for families and that the automatic payment system allows people to spread that cost. However the school is carrying significant debt associated with accounts we have paid to providers such as uniform and this is affecting our overall cash position. We would ask that now families are receiving accurate statements that you review your position and consider whether increasing your automatic payment or making a lump sum payment is required to help you catch-up on what is owed. Despite these concerns we are on the whole very grateful for the efforts being made to keep up with the never ending costs associated with a maintaining a child at secondary school. We endeavour to offer opportunities that add interest and increase the quality of the school experience but this does add to the cost of schooling as well. Bruce Hart Principal [email protected]
