Long and costly development cycles of embedded navigation and infotainment systems can result in products that lack sparkle. This leads to dwindling consumer interest and an ever-increasing threat from similar services on smartphones.Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) may struggle to keep up with rapidly evolving consumer expectations around digital services, but that’s not a good reason for ignoring the opportunity. Viable options to deliver lucrative differentiated services and improve embedded IVI are there to be grasped. In this eBook, we’ll outline three of the many ways HERE can support OEMs as they harness the potential offered by connected in-vehicle infotainment systems.

Beyond apps – enriched navigation and digital services 3Build unique digital brands and add value beyond the reach of smartphones

Provide superior search and routing 6Offer higher-quality solutions to boost the brand experience

Ease range anxiety with personalized EV routing 10Enhance the quality of EV journeys by integrating critical route information

Reduce cybercrime risk and enable new services with secure data 13Reassure privacy concerns and create a connected services ecosystem

Beyond apps – enriched navigation and superior digital servicesWith an expectation of constant freshness and regular updates, consumers want smartphone-like experiences in their cars.

OEMs haven’t been able to match this demand with quality. Often, even the simple yet essential task of searching for an address or point of interest provides an inferior user experience. Given that, consumers have grown reluctant to pay for navigation and services they can get from consumer apps, often for free. The result has been a lower consumer take up of embedded entertainment and navigation systems and an increased willingness by OEMs to rely on device mirroring or third-party solutions with their own app ecosystem.Despite that, infotainment and navigation should not be seen by OEMs as a mere add-on, but rather as a crucial path to interact with customers and strengthen brand experiences.

A golden opportunityDemand for comfort and convenience, coupled with stringent safety regulations will play a role in helping the global connected car market grow to an expected $93.7 billion by 2024. This market has the potential to make use of over-the-air updates to generate aftersales revenue from a variety of digital services, including navigation, automation, cybersecurity, entertainment, communications, vehicle maintenance, retail, home and work integrations and many more.In doing so, the navigation and infotainment system transforms from an isolated feature to the central intersection between the driver, the OEM and the outside world. Yet, OEMs struggle to place themselves at the center of this opportunity to connect more deeply with customers. This should not be the case.

Credible threats Consumer technology companies see opportunities in the IVI space and are actively trying to take control. If OEMs overlook the potential of embedding navigation and connected services, it could have significant long-term impacts.

→ OEMs could hand the in-car digital experience to consumer technology firms and fail to secure a potentially rich revenue stream

→ Brands could lose a vital connection with customers and weaken their appeal

→ OEMs could surrender valuable opportunities to gather data, truncating their own innovation

Better in-car experiences The great advantage for OEMs is that they build and design the vehicles. They can develop truly tailormade and differentiated in-vehicle experiences. They already know their customer and can use this knowledge to build a digital connection with them that excites and delights. That doesn’t mean OEMs need to do everything on their own. Suppliers like HERE can help OEMs and connect them with third parties to develop services for their Infotainment systems. Crucially, OEMs can access the latest technology and services while remaining the owner of the system and the experience. With its location expertise, HERE provides systems to meet core consumer expectations for quality search and routing. It supports the transformation to electric vehicles (EVs) and supplies a secure and trustworthy solution on which to create potentially lucrative differentiated data services.

If manufacturers want to regain this crucial part of the brand experience, they need to offer higher-quality solutions. Infotainment systems tailored to target audiences need to offer holistic experiences that make use of all screens, head-up displays (HUDs) and the sound system. They need to make it easier to search, offer optimal routing, intuitive guidance and connected services that are more advanced than those offered by free mapping apps. With highly accurate automotive-grade maps as foundation, HERE can support service development with APIs for sophisticated search and routing, natural voice input and guidance, public transport integration, sub-meter positioning to improve positioning accuracy and a fully customizable navigation solution.HERE has the building blocks and the automotive experience to co-create truly differentiated and enriched navigation solutions.

Ease range anxiety with personalized EV routingAs internal combustion engines are phased out in favor of electric, OEMs will need to overcome a lack of consumer confidence in electric vehicle (EV) range and the availability of charging infrastructure.

The challenge is to sustain the ‘go anywhere, anytime’ attitude currently enjoyed by drivers of conventional vehicles, Electric vehicle drivers shouldn’t have to rely on multiple apps and constant rerouting to get from A to B. OEMs can help end range anxiety by integrating the location of charging stations, charger specs, charging costs and speeds into their routing. In addition, data from cars on battery levels, average speeds, historic battery information and driving style can all be added into the mix for more accurate, personalized and responsive navigation.HERE can help deliver better services to drivers by connecting OEMs seamlessly to third parties for the integration of content to support EV driving and by providing ready-made services to embed charging information into the navigation experience.

76%of Brits think EVs can’t go far enough on a single charge, according to The AA.

Reduce cybercrime risk and enable new services with secure dataWhen consumers don’t understand how data is used or system security, wariness about sharing information with a business is justified.

Research conducted by HERE revealed that people are more willing to share location data when they understand its use and/or gain a benefit, such as increased safety, security or access to a new service. Overall, acting as a trusted and reputable data collector is the key to creating a willingness amongst consumers to share data. The need for reliable security also extends to how OEMs exchange information with third parties. Instead of simply providing access to their platforms, OEMs need something more intuitive – an interface that’s neutral and independent for secure data exchange. When exchange is secured in this way - and the consumer is happy - OEMs and third parties will be able to confidently and reliably apply data to create new connected car functionality, grow their digital ecosystems and differentiate services.

79%of consumers likely to share location data with mapping or location services
