Millennium Park
Christmas is in full swing in every corner of Chicago this month, but to truly be in the middle
of it all, there’s no better choice than MILLENNIUM PARK, where there are plenty of great ways
to celebrate the season. Every Friday evening (through December 19), the popular sculpture
affectionately known as “The Bean” becomes the centerpiece of a civic sing-along as local
choral groups lead the way for CAROLING AT CLOUD GATE. Meanwhile, skaters of varying
skill levels twirl, glide, stumble and sway amid the twinkling holiday lights and brilliant skyline
backdrop of the MCCORMICK TRIBUNE ICE RINK. And after a night of singing and skating,
chilly revelers are just steps away from a delicious warm-up of hot cocoa and hamburgers at
nearby RUDY’S BAR & GRILLE (69 E. Madison; 312.332.8111).

Mall I WantFor ChristmasWith so many great boutiquesand freestanding stores, headingto a mall for Christmas shoppingin Chicago may seem like a wasteof the great urban retail land-scape. But the word “mall”doesn’t do justice to the iconicand diverse Water Tower Place(835 N. Michigan, 312.440.3166),a true legend on the MagnificentMile. There’s something foreveryone here – the best in skincare and beauty at the newH2O+ kiosk on level 3(312.943.5929), fun toys andclothes to keep the little onesoccupied at Spoil Me Kidz Boutique on levels 2 and 7 (312.448.8128), and a place for dad to grab abeer and wait out the shopping frenzy at Harry Caray’s 7th Inning Stretch and the adjacentChicago Sports Museum on level 7 (312.202.0500).

Mexican Cuisine since 1963
Chicago has so many great dining options that
it’s often difficult for visitors in town for just a
short time to narrow down their choices and still
get a good representation of all the city has to
offer. One good strategy may be to map out
one’s dining itinerary based on the city’s rich and
diverse ethnic makeup – in other words, to
literally get a taste of Chicago cultural history
through its food. Consider these great options.
The city’s proud Mexican heritage is well-repre-
sented in River North by Su Casa (49 E. Ontario;
312.943.4041), a longtime stalwart for authentic
comfort food since the Kennedy administration.
While the heart of Chicago’s vibrant Indian
community is concentrated along a famous
stretch of Devon Avenue on the far north side, a
great downtown option – also in River North – is
the tantalizing buffet at India House (59 W.
Grand; 312.645.9500).
Up north in the city’s hip Wicker Park enclave,
the throwback Club Lucky (1824 W. Wabansia;
773.227.2300) is a great place for both a
delicious Italian meal and a trip back in time.
Finally, corned beef, potato pancakes and a
wonderful cross-section of Chicagoans have
defined the classic family-run Manny’s Cafeteria
and Delicatessen (1141 S. Jefferson;
312.939.2855) since the 1940s.
