Skipper Mike Williamson and the White Heat team are engaged in a good battle with Pugwash in IRC 2 class. White Heat won Race 8 to increase its lead to five points over Pugwash, skippered by David Murphy. This is not the first time those two boats have dueled as the Summit 40 edged the J/122 to win Class 3 of the IRC East Coast Championship in late October.

“We carved a lot out of the lead today. Whether it was enough remains to be seen,” Carroll said. “We are certainly in range and have given ourselves a chance. Hopefully, we can sail as well tomorrow as we did today.”

Competition is still close in the Melges 24 class with skipper Lorenzo Santini and UKA UKA Racing taking a three-point lead into Friday. Lorenzo Bressani is steering while Jonathan McKee is calling tactics for UKA UKA Racing, which has been remark-ably consistent this week. The Italian team has won three races and counts no worse than a third in totaling 12 points – three better than the Swiss entry Blu Moon.

“They are sailing unbelievably. We are going fast, but they are just a click better,” said Flavio Favini, helmsman aboard Blu Moon, which won Race 7 and took third in Race 8. “We have a chance, but it is a very small one. After what the UKA UKA guys did today, they deserve to be winning the regatta.”

Skipper Giovanni Maspero and the Joe Fly team tacked on two more good results on Thursday and now hold a solid 11-point lead in the Farr 40 class. Tactician Francesco Bruni has made all the right calls this week as the Italian boat has finished fourth or better in seven of eight starts, notching its first victory of the regatta in Race 8.

Barking Mad, an American boat skippered by Jim Richardson of Newport, RI, notched a second and third on Thursday to move from fifth to second in the overall standings. Tactician Terry Hutchinson believes Barking Mad has been sailing relatively well all week and finally caught some breaks.

“I’m incredibly happy with our performance today. We started the day by setting a team goal of finishing on the podium and this was certainly a step in the right direc-tion,” he said. “Joe Fly is sailing really well and will be hard to beat. We just have to continue sailing the way we did today and be in position to capitalize if Joe Fly makes any mistakes.”

All the boys on the Highland Fling were happy to hear the weather forecast for Thursday. The Wally 82-footer, easily the largest entry at Key West 2010, has been unable to maximize its potential in the moderate, shifty conditions that predominated the initial three days of the regatta.

“We were really, really pleased when we went out this morning and found the breeze was what it was predicted,” tactician Peter Isler said.

Highland Fling, owned by Irvine Laidlaw of Monaco, responded with its best day of the regatta – posting a second and a third to close to within two points of sec-ond place in IRC 1. “We got the sails up and down real well and our maneuvers were terrific. We turned that 82-footer into a small boat today,” Isler said.

Bella Mente, a Reichel-Pugh 66, owned by Hap Fauth of Newport, RI, has run away with IRC 1 by winning seven of eight races. At this point, the battle is for second place between Highland Fling and the TP52 Interlodge (Austin Fragomen, New York).

There is a great battle going on in IRC 2 class between the Summit 40 White Heat and the J/122 Pugwash. Those two boats finished one-two in Class 3 at the IRC East Coast Championship off Annapolis in late October and are positioned to do so again in Key West.

Skipper Mike Williamson and the White Heat team saw their lead cut to one after Race 7 on Thursday, but rebounded to win Race 8 and push the advantage back to five points. Tactician Larry Leonard, a North Sails professional, admitted Pugwash will need two terrific results and a little good luck in order to overtake its hometown rival from Newport.

“We’ll go out and sail the best we can and hope the breaks fall our way,” Leonard said. “We can’t really engage White Heat because their boat is faster than

ours. We just try to sail in the same vicinity.”In the International Team Competition for the Nautica

Watches Trophy, the two Italian Teams have been close all week. Joe Fly, Calvi Network and UKA UKA Racing have a narrow 6 point lead over Nerone, Fantastika, and Blu Moon.

““It was the steadiest wind I’ve ever seen, both in terms of velocity and direction,” said Ken Legler, principal race officer on Division 1.

J/80Vying for the J/80 class Mid-winter Championship as

well as for top honors in Key West, there was a bit of pres-sure on the top boats in the class under a picture-perfect sky and a steady southeasterly breeze. With four races left to sail, there are still opportunities for lead changes and takeovers. Le Tigre started in fifth on Monday, but played it cool and steadily climbed the ranks for a two-bullet day and first in class on Thursday. “The sailing conditions have been great and it’s just getting better,” said Glenn Darden. The Texas entry is co-owned by Reese Hillard with Max Skelley is calling tactics.

“Glenn Darden (of Le Tigre) sailed an incredible series today,” observed Jeff Johnstone of Little Feat, from Newport, RI. “People are starting to get more aggressive and at the first start, everyone seemed to be bunched at the pin end.” Johnstone’s team slipped from first to second in the week’s cumulative score, just one point

above, Rascal. “Today was a day where you do have to be more aggressive with the boat,” Johnstone said.

Working hard to boost their position out of mid-fleet standings, Key West vet Jammy Dodger was encour-aged by a sixth place finish in race eight. Josh Sharp was calling tactics onboard Neil Martin’s entry from Hamble, Great Britain. “It was breezy to start with and then it eased a bit, but the chop was still up. There were gains to be made going downwind,” Sharp said about the day’s challenges. “You’ve got to be aggressive to get a good lane.” Jammy Dodger plans to return to Key West. “Two weeks ago I was skiing in the French Alps,” Sharp said when asked what brings him to this warm, tropical island. “Also, the great thing about Key West is that you get wind and sun at the same time.” In England, Sharp explained, sailors joke about having either high winds with no sun or sun with no wind. Three of Jammy Dodger’s crewmembers are from England and one is from Norway.

Bill Rose’s Kicks completed a 4-11 day and they were working hard to dig out of a mid-fleet position. “It’s been a tough regatta,” Rose said, in good cheer and pleased by the strong competition. “Look at Rumor - they won Key West 2009 in the J/80 class, but now they’re in the same shoes that we are.” Kicks won second in class for Key West 2009. Rose’s team was trying not to sail too aggressively, but it was easy to get caught up in the thrill of the chase and the boat was one of several who were over early. “There was a big hole down to leeward,” Rose said, “Everybody onboard said GO!…and so I went.”

Glenn Darden has enjoyed tremendous success in the J/24 and J/105 and J/119 classes, winning the North american champion-ship in the latter two. Now the Texas resident is competing in the J/80 class and has his sights on the Midwinter Championship that is being contested as part of Key West 2010. Darden and co-owner Reese Hilliard had a tremendous day on the water on Thursday, winning both races to take over the lead in J/80 class, which has attracted 19 boats.

John Cooper has been competing in the annual race week off Key West for a decade. Last night, the Missouri skipper reached the pinnacle of the prestigious regatta when his Mills 43 Cool Breeze was named Lewmar Boat of the Day. “I’m very, very excited. This is a tremendous honor,” Cooper said. “I’ve been racing here for 10 years and only been on the podium once before so this was a long time coming.” Cool Breeze posted a pair of second place results on Thursday to move into third place in IRC 2, which has been among the most competitive classes at Key West 2010. “We’ve had five different boats win a race so that says a lot about the fleet,” said Cooper, who campaigned a J/29 for eight years before buying the IRC racer designed by Mark Mills. Beau LeBlanc, sales man-ager of Navtec, was on hand to present Cooper with a Lewmar winch and a crystal bowl for capturing Boat of the Day.

KEY WEST 2010 Friday, January 22, 2010

Neil O’Sullivan was trimming and Stuart Lindow called tactics. Kicks best result was third place in race four, and currently lie in eighth place overall.

J/105Thursday’s fresh breeze added fast-paced sail trim

and speedy spinnaker handling with the intent of leav-ing the shrimping to those rustic old Key West shrimp boats. In the tight competition for Key West Race Week honors, the class is also sailing in their Mid-winter Championship. Savasana is dominating the 14-boat class with a 16-point lead. Ranking third in class by Thursday, Blackhawk, leaped from sixth-place to third place on Tuesday and is holding onto third just one point ahead of Damien Emery’s Eclipse, and one point behind Kenneth Coburn’s Ghost. With 2 races to go, there is a close race for the second and third podium places.

Bill Zartler’s Solaris, earned a bullet early in the week for race three and had a 5-5 day on Thursday. Zartler’s wife, Angie, was crewing onboard. “We have an inter-national team,” Angie said about her crewmembers who hail from as far away as Israel, Mexico, England and Texas. “We also have a Cajun,” she added. “We’re

a sailing family.” This colorful team is so close that they spend holidays together in Texas.

Orangutan, Bernard Girod’s entry, felt that they had their best game so far on Thursday’s Race 8. Orangutan is a chartered boat and Girod’s own J/105, Rock & Roll, competes in his homeport in California. Tom Isaacson is trimmer and the sole lady onboard is his sister-in-law. “The class’s leaders are excellent Savasana, Solaris, Ghost - there are no bad sailors in this fleet,” Girod said about his competition.

“It’s been an awesome week of all-around sailing and we’re very, very pleased.”

– Brian Keane, savasana

Bill Lakenmacher’s Radiance, is competing in its first Key West. Foredeck crew Michael Hassler exclaimed, “We’re having a blast!” The Radiance team sails together at home in Galveston Bay, Texas. In race one, their spin-naker was torn during a drop, costing them valuable time. “We just threw some tape on it and got it back to work,” Hassler said, having too much fun to let small frustrations turn into big ones.

Division 3Multihull

Flying and fast in the multihull class, Bob Harkrider’s Gulfstream 35 Merlin has a virtual lock on the overall standings in spite of a parted sail track setback. Clever jury rigging allowed Merlin to at least race with her jib and strong tactics also kept them on top the competi-tion winning both races. “In the second weather leg, we worked the right side while our competition went to the left,” Harkrider explained. This move worked in their favor when the wind differed slightly from one side of the course to the other. Tim Britton’s Tobiko remains in second place with 23 points. An 8-point lead going into Thursday’s racing has been sliced in half as Cliff Farrah’s Strategery is racing with good strategy to put additional heat on Tobiko’s second-place standing.

PHRF 2There are days when things just can’t get much better

and for the crew of Bluto, Thursday was one of those days. Winning both races, Bill Berges and Ben Hall’s Florida based Evelyn 32 is leading by a mere point over Bill Sweetser’s J/109 Rush and the final outcome for the

Skipper Gerry Taylor and the Tangent team turned in a terrific effort at Key West 2009, winning eight of 10 races en route to overall victory in PHRF 3 class. Things haven’t gone quite as well for the Cape Fear 38 this year. The annapolis-based boat is fourth overall in PHRF 2 after posting its best result of the regatta (2nd in Race ) on Thursday. In this photo, Tangent heels hard on approach to the windward mark during racing action on Thursday.

Juan Carlos Gil – no BoundariesBy Bill Wagner

When Juan Carlos Gil was 10 years old he took a school field trip to the Shake-A-Leg facility in Miami. Gil went out sailing on Biscayne Bay and thoroughly enjoyed himself.

That experience fostered a life-long love of sailing that has culminated in Gil’s participation in Acura Key West 2010 as helmsman for Act One, a J/24 competing in PHRF 3. The 28-year-old Miami resident showed he belonged by taking third in consecutive races.

What makes Gil’s journey from beginner to place-winner at North America’s larg-est North American regatta noteworthy is the fact he is legally blind. Gil cannot see the competition or the marks, but gets around the course just fine by relying on well-honed instincts and many years of experience.

“It is challenging in many ways. I cannot see the water line, read the tell tales or check what is happening on the course,” Gil said. “However, I always have someone on the boat telling me to head up or head down. I have developed a certain feel for the wind and the water and know when to adjust the helm.”

Gil’s other senses are more acute than the average sailor and feeling the wind on his face, hearing a gust come on or judging the waves based on the boat’s move-ment help with his decision-making.

“I use my nose as a guide and depending on how it is hitting my face is how I adjust the tiller to change course,” he said. “It took a little time to get used to the J/24 and how it handles, but I have become more comfortable each day and now I am the one deciding when we are going to tack.”

Shake A Leg Miami is a non-profit organization with a mission to utilize the marine environment to improve the health, education and independence of people with physical, developmental and economic challenges. Located at a former U.S. Coast

Guard Seaplane Base in Coconut Grove, it provides ongoing education programs and a community boating center. The organization has been represented at Key West before with quadriplegic Karen Mitchell skippering a J/24 in 2008 and 2009.

Mitchell could not make the regatta this year, but Shake-A-Leg volunteer John Muir knew Gil would prove an ideal replacement. At the age of 15, the youngster was skilled enough to place fifth overall at the World Blind Sailing Championships.

“Juan Carlos is a very competent helmsman and there was no doubt in my mind that he was up to this challenge,” said Muir, who is crewing for Gil. “He is enthu-siastic, tenacious and a good learner. Juan Carlos is very competitive by nature so sailboat racing fits well with his personality.”

Act One is owned by John Smittle of Cudjoe Key, a sailing professional and skilled instructor who has given Gil many good pointers this week. John Thomas of Chicago is serving as a trimmer and also brings load of experience considering he is competing at Key West for the 23rd time while Gayle Gray of Toronto completes the team.

“Juan Carlos is fortunate to have good people onboard who can help with the tactics and strategy, which enables him to focus on driving. He has really gotten the adjustments of the tiller down quite well.”

Gil, who also has cerebral palsy and has limited use of his legs, learned to sail aboard the Access Dinghy that is displayed in the Shake-A-Leg booth on the Premiere Racing lot here in Key West. He moved into Freedom 20 sloops and routinely wins races in the Wednesday Night Beer Can Series on Biscayne Bay.

“Juan Carlos is a true example of what is possible when you give a person the proper equipment, training and opportunity,” said Harry Horgan, President of Shake-A-Leg Miami. “Key West 2010 is the best international sailing event in the U.S. Thanks to Peter Craig and his team at Premiere Racing, Juan Carlos has the opportunity to sail with the best sailors in the world and Shake-A-Leg Miami has an opportunity to be introduced to people who have a passion for sailing. It is our hope that more people will help us to use the water to help others help themselves.”

Gil is grateful for the opportunity to compete in such a prestigious regatta and is hopeful of winning a race before the week is over. He has received encouragement from the likes of Rod Johnstone of J/Boats and was offered an opportunity to travel to Newport to sail a J/80 by class president Kristen Robinson.

“It is a real honor to be part of Key West race week and to represent Shake-A-Leg Miami. This is the first time I have competed in a regatta of this stature and I am both excited and proud,” Gil said.

International teams Update

Things are really heating up in the International Team Competition with the two Italian entries just six points apart going into the final day of racing. Italy 1, which features a pair of class leaders in UKA UKA Racing (Melges 24) and Joe Fly (Farr 40) holds the lead with a low score of 78 points. However, the sailors from Italy 2, led by the second place entry in Melges 24 (Blu Moon) and the third place boat in Farr 40 (Nerone) are hot on the heels of their countrymen with 84 points. There are nine teams entered with each consisting of a Melges 24, Melges 32 and Farr 40 one-design with each being scored solely against other boats involved in the competition. UKA UKA Racing, the Melges 24 leader skippered by Lorenzo Santini, is easily the most successful participant with a low score of 14 points. Joe Fly, which is winning Farr 40 and is skippered by Giovanni Maspero, has 22 points. Blu Moon, owned by Franco Rossini, is the pacesetter for Italy 2 with 19 points. There is also a good battle be-tween for third place between Scandinavia and USA West Coast. Samba Pa Ti (John Kilroy, Malibu, CA), the leader in Melges 32 class, has a low score of 24 points to lead the U.S. squad. New Wave, currently second in Melges 32, paces Scandinavia.

Race week Supports Maritime historical ProjectsAn update from Ed Little, President, Key West Maritime Historical Society

The Key West Maritime Historical Society is an all-volunteer, non-profit educational and cultural society, dedicated to the study and preservation of the rich maritime heritage of Key West and the Florida Keys. The Society sponsors free public lectures, field trips, special events and interpretive projects to increase public awareness and appreciation of maritime history. The Maritime Historical Society also publishes the quarterly Florida Keys Sea Heritage Journal. The Journal has been published for over seventeen years, and contains many articles and illustrations not available elsewhere. It is a tremendous aid in learning why the Keys are such a special place.

Beginning in January 2000, Premiere Racing Inc., the organizing entity for Race Week, began working with the Key West Maritime Historical Society. The event organizer makes contributions to the Society in appreciation of the role that the Society and the City of Key West play in hosting the annual event. Many sailors know that Key West is the scene of some very intense sailing every January. That is when hundreds of boats converge there for “Race Week”. But, what many may not know is that this competitive event also helps promote greater public awareness of maritime history.

Competitive sailing has roots in the seafaring traditions of “the age of sail”. Bringing in Race Week to support some projects that highlight the maritime past of Key West- once a pre-eminent homeport for hundreds of commercial sail is a natural fit.

This partnership has yielded some impressive results. In 2006 the accumulated contributions allowed the Society to fund construction (augmented by a Florida matching grant) of a diorama of the Key West waterfront, as it would have looked in the 1850’s. In that era, the island was perhaps the most important seaport in Florida. So, this diorama, which faithfully follows the footprint of the city infrastructure of the day, offers a rare glimpse into what the Key West of a by-gone age looked like. The public can now view the diorama (which measures three feet by six feet, with an additional painted perspective background) at the Customs House Museum of the Key West Art and Historical Society.

Then, in late 2007, additional Race Week contributions enabled the Society to provide four “interpretive markers” for installation at the street ends that lead to the Harborwalk at Key West Historic Seaport (the venue for most Race Week events). The graphic images and text on the markers offer visitors an overview of the maritime industries (most of which began in the 19th century) that once were a vital element in the socio-economic life of the environs of the Seaport.

In coming weeks the Society plans to conclude the research and design phase of developing additional markers for the Seaport. As in the past, Premiere Racing will be the principal financial partner that furthers that initiative. Those wishing to learn more about the Society should visit the web page www. keywestmaritime.org.

The diorama is a replicate of what the Key West Harbor looked like in 1850. Funding for the diorama was partially provided by Premiere Racing to support Key West’s rich maritime history. The diorama is housed in the Customs House Museum, located at 281 Front Street near Mallory Square.

Bluto, an Evelyn 32 co-owned by Bill Berges and Ben Hall, won both races on Thursday to take over the lead in PHRF 2. Bluto entered the day four points behind Rush (Bill Sweetser, annapolis), but emerged one point ahead of the J/109. Ben’s wife Nan celebrated her birthday on Thursday. Two first-place finishes are almost as good as cake and ice cream.

no Dramas Onboard Soap OperaBy Rebecca Burg

Key West Race Week’s reputation for attracting the best in the sport is legendary and the quality of the competition this year attests to this fact.

Scott Self and his newly-arrived crew on the Hobie 33, Soap Opera, are a group of total strangers who have just met...one day before the regatta started. Scott has a diverse background; Yacht Club founder, city mayor, volunteer firefighter and an ocean-crossing USCG licensed captain - just to name a few.

Hailing from Rockwall, Texas, the Hobie 33 is competing in her second Key West. So how did Soap Opera end up with such an eclectic crew? Self and his regular

team had just completed the recent Ft. Lauderdale to Key West race. Limited by the amount of time that they can take off from their jobs ashore, Self’s crew unfortunately had to get back to the grind. Recently retired, Scott was able to stay with his boat in Key West. Desiring to race again, he advertised in Scuttlebutt for crew and the results were encouraging. Numerous sailors responded.

“I was able to pick who I felt would fit together best on the boat,” Self said, sur-prised by the amount of people eager to share their sailing skills. “There are a lot of good sailors without boats out there,” Self explained.

The final crew arrived from Illinois, Tennessee, Rhode Island and Michigan and first met in person on Sunday, just one day before the start of the Key West series.

“I love sailing with new people,” Self said. He also teaches the sport. “One of the greatest things about sailing with new people is that you’re out there all day and you really can get to know them. I’m going to have nine new friends after this week is over.” Two of the new crewmembers are here on standby.

With a warm, enthusiastic smile, Self clearly enjoys the ‘people factor’ when it comes to sailboat racing. “It’s the ultimate in team building,” he explains. During a competitive race, the team not only must be aware of the other boats, but there’s that crucial safety and seamanship factor. Soap Opera’s Key West team is meshing well and continues to get in the groove as the week progresses. “The crew work is great,” Self said.

Scott Self is a multi-dimensional character, and sailing isn’t the only talent that he shares with the world. Scott is extremely active in his community; volunteering his time in numerous charitable causes and was instrumental in the establishment of organizations such as Rockwall (TX) United Way and the Chandlers Landing Yacht Club, located on the eastern shore of Lake Hubbard in Rockwall, TX. Scott served as mayor of Rockwall, Texas, the City Council and was County Treasurer for several years.

“I really enjoy my time in public service,” Scott said, trying to explain that deep,

selfless drive to give to society. “Caring about your community fits very closely with the sport of sailing.” Circling back to his love of sailing, Self started Dallas Race Week at Chandlers Landing Yacht Club, and the annual event has been going strong since 1982.

Self grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas, and his sailing passion took root when he became involved in racing one-design Sunfish at age 13. He’s a licensed captain and has sailed across the Atlantic twice. The first trip was to deliver a boat for a race. A few years later, the second crossing happened after racing on a Swan 44 in the Fastnet Race. Newly wedded to his college sweetheart, Self and his lucky bride leisurely cruised the Swan back to the United States for a distinctly nautical honeymoon.

The Soap Opera team doesn’t seem overly concerned about getting some podium time. Scott’s quite thrilled by just being out there, building teamwork with his new Key West crew and giving it their all. “Everybody that’s here is good and a lot of them are great,” Self says about Race Week. “This is incredibly good race management. If you’re going to travel all the way from Dallas, it’s nice to know that the race is profes-sional. It’s why people come from all over the world to race in Key West.”

Self doesn’t hesitate when asked if he’ll return to Key West. “Now that I’m retired, this is on my list of must do’s,” he assures. It’s a boon to the sport to have guys like Scott out there on the water.

Still smiling following a minor setback in race with a damaged shroud fitting, the crew onboard Soap Opera had never met until the Sunday before the racing began. Owner Scott Self (lower left) has an infectious optimism and the crew are very happy to be racing in Key West.

series is up in the air. “We were ‘Bluto the birthday boat’ today,” said Ben Hall’s wife and crewmember, Nan. She was cheerfully celebrating her special day on Thursday. “I got two bullets for my birthday,” Nan exclaimed. “Besides, the sailing was fantastic and we had really good teamwork today.”

“Also, the great thing about Key west is that you get wind and sun at the same time. In england sailors joke about having either high winds with no sun or sun with no wind.”

– Josh Sharp, Jammy Dodger

Bruce Gardner’s L’Outrage, a Beneteau with a home port in Annapolis, sailed a 3-2 day with some close action with Tangent in race seven. Tangent, Gerry Taylor’s Cape Fear 38 finished with a 2-5 line, a spinnaker wrap stifling their groove in Race 8. The frustrating sail malfunction happened right before the finish gate and Tangent lost at least 12 seconds of time. Kent Mitchell’s Cape Fear 38, Velocity, and Bill Sweetser’s J/109, Rush, took quick advantage of Tangent’s lost time window. “We would’ve been closer to L’Outrage,” said tactician Cliff Statt. “But there’s still a chance to beat them tomorrow.”

Scott Self’s Hobie 33, Soap Opera had to retire on leg three of Race 7 on Thursday. The starboard side turnbuckle chainplate fitting pulled out slightly, and the crew chose to play it safe and return to harbor to repair it before it went from bad to worse. Self was confident that retiring early would put them in good shape to complete the final two races. “In Key West, all the riggers and equipment guys are here … if you can’t get it fixed here, then it won’t get fixed,” Scott Self noted, his outlook for being back in the game by Friday undoubtedly positive. Tools spread out on deck, the crew who had not raced together before were working as a close team and repairs were underway. One of Soap Opera’s crew, Don, from Michigan is a professional rigger and the thought of fixing the boat was far better than being back in the Michigan cold. Don said, “The first time I came to Key West, I stayed for about a year.”

In this incredible aerial shot of the Division 1 course on Thursday, nearly all of the boats in the Farr 40 class are captured in a single frame during a windward mark rounding. Enfant Terrible (bow No. 10), an Italian entry owned by alberto Rossi, leads the pack around the mark. Sailing in second is Joe Fly, the Italian entry skippered by Giovanni Maspero that leads the class.
