Key Words February Edition
Citation preview
Dear Key Clubbers,
Hopefully you have all no-
ticed that this is the 1st issue in
the past two months. No, it’s
definitely not because I don’t
like being the editor and I’ve
decided I’m not going to do my
job anymore, just that activities
during the November and De-
cember months were few and
sparse.
With the new year comes
resolutions and promises to
ourselves and to each other. I
can already say that one of my
many resolutions already in-
volves Key Club and is probably
the most important resolution
I’ve made. I’ve promised myself
to make a difference in the
lives of other people, and al-
though that has already been
so with my activities with Key
Club, I still have made that
promise to give myself to those
who need it the most.
And so we are leaving 2007
and stepping right into 2008
with a lot of activities and fund-
raisers ready including the Vol-
leyball Marathon, Coffee House,
and Miles of Dimes event. Keep
serving that service!
Your editor,
Dave Rodrigues

Each month the executive
board assesses which member
(s) of the Key Club have been
the most active throughout the
previous month. This is ulti-
mately determined through the
calculation of hours each mem-
ber of the club has completed.
Once reviewing the candi-
dates for Member of the Month
and finalizing our decision, the
individual member(s) will re-
ceive a certificate explaining
their achievement of service
during the year. A member may
only be Member of the Month
once per year and at the con-
clusion of the year, the execu-
tive board will determine the
amount of hours each Member
of the Month has accumulated
throughout the year.
Once this has been com-
pleted, a Member of the Year
will be determined and shall be
awarded a prize that has yet to
be announced.
The December Members of
the Month are:
Amanda Jiminez
&
Alicia McElhone
Congratulations to our winners!

its way and is a fun-filled
night of club bonding that I’m
sure will help bond all of our
members.
For years, the Volleyball
Marathon was an honored
and anticipated event for the
entire student body. This
year, we want to reestablish
the marathon as a fun event
for the whole school. But it is
going to take a lot of work for
us to reach our goal. So I look
forward to working with all of
you to achieve that goal.
Right after Volleyball
Marathon, we’ll have to start
preparing for the 62nd An-
nual New Jersey District Con-
vention in King of Prussia,
Pennsylvania. This is when
all the Key Clubs in New Jer-
sey gather and we get a
With the Thanksgiving
Dinner, Stall Day, and Kara-
oke Night, the past few
months have been absolutely
wonderful. I am continually
impressed and delighted with
the dedication and devotion
to service within our club and
school. I know that our club
will continue to amaze me as
the year goes on.
With the come of the New
Year you have all been intro-
duced to activities that are all
but new to the BHS Key Club,
such as Read with Me and
Cosmic Bowling. Read With
Me was a great opportunity
for us to get out and not only
help community, but also to
show all of Bloomfield what
an excellent organization Key
Club is. Cosmic Bowling is on
chance to be recognized for
all our hard work. Anyone
within our Key Club can come
to convention, so I hope that
you’re interested in joining
us.
I hope you all had great
vacations, because now, we
have our work cut out for us!
We have to prepare for Vol-
leyball Marathon, MEP Day,
and get ready for District
Convention. So I hope to see
all of you lending a hand to
help out.
Your President
Alex Gibson
This holiday season our
Key Club worked on a wide
array of service projects,
beginning with a long-awaited
return of the Senior Citizens
Thanksgiving Dinner. The
day before Thanksgiving over
100 Key Club members
served food to almost 200
senior citizens from our com-
munity.
With the school construc-
tion finally completed, after
four years of dust and noise,
the seniors were presented
with a remodeled cafeteria,
many new key club members,
and most importantly food
that was edible thanks to our
friends from Bella Casa Ca-
terers in Belleville. It was an
enjoyable experience for
everyone involved and the
seniors were elated that this
event made a return appear-
ance.
As you all know that was
just the start to a holiday
season of giving. Upon our
return from Thanksgiving, we
promoted one of the best
fundraising projects ever
developed at BHS…Stall Day!
Thanks to the generous stu-
dents in this school we were
able to raise almost $3900
for the Ronald McDonald
House Charities.
Of course we continued
on with our holiday season of
service by collecting food and
toys for local families in need.
We also helped our Kiwanis
club by collecting coats for
the New Jersey Cares Coat
Drive in early December. You
should all be truly proud of
collecting these items for
people who are less fortunate
in our area. We played a
small part in making the holi-
days a little more enjoyable…
way to go!!
Of course I can’t forget to
mention some fun events
such as Karaoke Night.
While the attendance was a
little sparse, we managed to
have a killer time watching
many people (including my-
A D V I S O R ’ S C O M M E N T S
self) make complete fools of
themselves! If you missed
this event have no fear be-
cause the karaoke machine
will be around again during
the Volleyball Marathon!
The service never stops in
Key Club at Bloomfield High
School and that is why we are
top shelf!!

Presidential Message
The Bloomfield Kiwanis club has been busy planning a variety of fundraisers for the up-coming spring! On Wednesday, March 20th we will be sponsoring a restaurant night at the Town Pub. We will receive 20% of the total bill for everyone who eats from 5pm – 10pm. All you have to do is bring the flier or just mention the Bloomfield Kiwanis club. Please tell everyone you know to come eat and raise some money for our club. Our next big fund-raiser will be an iPad raffle starting from the end of March and running through the end of April. Tickets will be $5 each and we hope to raise a lot of money! On Sunday, April 14th, we will be holding our annual Pancake Breakfast from 8am – 1pm at the high school. The cost will be $5 per person which includes unlimited pancakes, sausage, and coffee. Raffle tickets for the iPad will be sold during this event so it will be a good time to ask your par-ents to buy a ticket for you!
Our club is looking to expand so if your parents are interested in coming to one of our meetings, please tell them to email me at [email protected]. We hope to see all of you participate in our fundraisers over the next two months!
Kiwanis Bulletin
This month in Key Club we have a new event I am very excited for! Its called K-kids
fun night! K-kids fun night is aimed at teaching the K-Kids in Bloomfield how to
lead healthy lifestyles through healthy eating and active play. At the event we will
have relay races, an obstacle course, and a Just Dance competition. We will also
have an array of fresh fruits and vegetables for the K-kids to eat rather than junk
food. I hope this event will bring our key club closer to our fellow k-kids.
Also this month, we are focusing on the major emphasis project. The motto for
MEP is "children: their future, our focus." The BHS Key Club will be babysitting at
Carteret elementary school every Tuesday while parents attend free community
classes. We also will be beginning tutoring at Demarest and Brookdale elementary
schools. By interacting with the children in our community, Key Club hopes that
will we have a positive impact on their lives. From academics to physical fitness, it is
important that we act as role models to the younger generation. After all, the chil-
dren we influence today will become the future Key clubbers of Bloomfield High
School!

UPCK: Just recently our over
25 official members gathered
together to make fleece blan-
kets for Project Linus, one of
our most popular events. It
was really fun making the
blankets while chatting with
everyone in the club. And the
blankets all had the cutest
patterns. (My personal favor-
ite was the pink one with
flowers!)
CK: What a wonderful pro-
ject! And 25 members,
sounds like you’ve come so
far from where you started
last year with only 4 mem-
bers!
UPCK: Thank goodness! I
may not be big, blonde and
beautiful but I know where
I’ve been in the past and this
year has been way better so
far. (I hope we never go back
to before!) We have a lot of
great new members who are
getting along and becoming
really good friends even out-
side Circle K. The club is
much more fun this year and
even more productive than
last year!
CK: Do you have any fun
events coming up to look
forward to?
UPCK: Yes! Even though this
semester is coming to a close
(I can hear the bells?), we’ve
still got a lot of events
planned for the beginning of
December. In fact, this com-
ing Friday we’ll be making
holiday cards for the kids at
the Children’s Hospital. We
even get people from the
entire university to help out!
We may even have one day
more of fleece blanket mak-
ing.
CK: Sounds like you’re doing
a great job of service so far
this year. Do you have any
advice for the kids out there
watching the show today?
UPCK: Of course! Kids, make
sure you journey on through
service. Even when times get
tough, as it did for our club
when we only had a few
members, just keep pushing
through because things will
Good morning BHS (-ore)!!

door…
Welcome to the Corny
Kristin Show! I’m your host
Corny Kristin! The show to-
day will include an exclusive
from some of the nicest kids
in town—those members of
the Kiwanis family!
Corny Kristin: Now I’d like to
welcome our first guest, the
University of Pennsylvania
Circle K club! UPenn Circle K,
what have you been up to
lately?
UPenn Circle K: Well Corny
Kristin, at the beginning of
November we sold Penn
Mom and Penn Dad t-shirts
to benefit the Children’s Mira-
cle Network. It’s a great way
to say Mama, I’m a big girl
now! The project was a huge
success making over $1700!
CK: That’s great! You should
run and tell that to everyone!
What else have you guys
been up to?
always get better. Service
can make you feel as though
you are defying gravity and
even though times are stress-
ful, nothing is stressful once
you see the smiling faces of
the people you have helped.
Remember even a group of
kids can make big changes if
they stand up for what they
believe in!
CK: Thanks a lot for joining
us UPenn Circle K! Remem-
ber kids, without love this
world can’t go round! So
keep on serving and helping
out others! Stress may bring
you down and times may get
rough, but you can’t stop the
beat!

P.S. As you can see I love musi-
cals! In fact I’m even taking a
class this semester called
American Musical Theater!
Hopefully, many of you un-
derstood the main show that
I alluded to throughout this
article. But if you were pay-
ing attention I threw in
songs from 3 more musicals,
some of my favorites! If you
can find them you’ll gain 4
extra points for the did I
mess up? Contest. Good luck!
K-Kids Fun Night
Our Key Club wanted to
be more involved with our
K-Kids. It was time to create
a stronger relationship. The
best way to was to create an
event that included relay
races, obstacle courses, Just
Dance, and feed them
healthy foods . Which goes
along with our Major Em-
phasis Project. We will
break the kids into groups
where the kids will go to
different stations and switch
off after a certain amount of
time.
This will take place at
7:00pm, so all members
should arrive around
6:00pm to help set up for
the event.
I hope you’re just as ex-
cited as I am! It will be
fun racing against the kids
and teaching them ways to
eat more healthy. Mark
this event on your calen-
dar because you surely
don’t want to miss it.

Do you ever wonder what’s
new with Kiwanis or what
events they’re up to? With eve-
ryone’s schedules being how
they are, its easy to not know
what’s going on.
For those of you who have
no idea what Kiwanis is, it is the
all grown-up version of Key Club
(the last step up the K-Family
tree after Circle-K) and spon-
sors our Key Club at the high
school. Essentially, without the
Bloomfield Kiwanis Club, our
club along with many other
clubs would not and could not
exist.
If you’ve all been going to
our morning meetings :-) , you
should know of Kiwanis’s
latest project: Read With Me.
This project is the very es-
sence of Key Club Interna-
tional’s Winter Season of
Service, Read and Lead.
If you are a fan of kids
and like interacting with peo-
ple, then this is the perfect
activity for you. On Tuesdays
at 7:00pm, children and their
parents go to Oakside Manor
to have a fun night of scho-
lastic activities and reading.
Key Clubbers have the pleas-
ure of interacting one-on-one
with the kids once they have
been separated into different
rooms where the Key Club-

bers take the lead of their
group and read a story to
them along with playing an
activity.
It’s an awesome activity
and teaches kids so much.
Plus, it’s a fun and easy way
to gain membership hours!

wanis activities, refer to this

month.

members are asked to mentor a child
by donating an hour or so weekly to
read stories to elementary school
students who are struggling with
books. By reading books together and
becoming the child’s friend, the Key
Club member becomes a positive role
model and mentor. Why not spice it
up? You can make the experience
more fun by dressing up as a charac-
ter in a book! Do not be afraid to get
creative and show children that read-
ing can be fun. For more information

of adults in the United States are
illiterate? This is a fact, and unfor-

These adults cannot even read to

Scrapbook Wants You!
Are you good at cutting out
pictures? Are you creative? Do
you enjoy scrapbooking? Can
you at least type up short cap-
tions? Then, this is just for
you! Jenny Villanueva, your
BHS Key Club Scrapbook
Editor, is in need of a scrap-
book committee. It requires
hours of energy and creativity,
but it is sure worth your time!
The theme for this year's
DCON is the 1920's, some-
thing I'm sure all of you will
find fun to work with. Even if
you could only lend an hour
or two of your time, or if you
are simply remotely inter-
ested, your help will be greatly
appreciated! (and rewarded
with food) So, if any of the
above applies to you, please
do not hesitate to email
Jenny at:

So, if you’ve been to any of
Key Club’s recent meetings,
there’s a slight chance that
you’ve heard of this thing called
District Convention. To some of
us the thought of DCON brings
back so many great memories
and anticipation for the next
one, but others are probably at
a lost at what DCON means.
This is the second largest
New Jersey District event (next
to Fall Rally for those of you
who had the pleasure of going)
and a time of celebration.
In April, Key Clubs from all
over New Jersey go to King of
Prussia, Pennsylvania (and
please don’t ask why NJ District
Convention is held in PA— just
go with it :-) ) for a fun and
eventful weekend.
We will be leaving school on
Friday morning and getting
to our destination within a
few hours, giving everyone
time to shop for a good few
hours at one of the east
coast’s biggest malls, King of
Prussia Mall. Once all of your
money has been spent (just
kidding—don’t really do that!),
you will go up to your hotel
rooms, get situation (unpack,
get comfortable, etc.) and
then get spiffed up for the
1st night’s event: caucusing.
This is one of the most im-
portant nights during DCON
since speeches are taken place
by candidates running for dis-
trict office. After caucusing, the
rest of the night is devoted to a
non-formal dance and then
bedtime until the morning’s
festivities. From there, things
ranging from presentations, the
Service Fair, elections, work-
shops, and Awards are held
throughout the rest of the day
into the night, wrapping it up
with another, but formal dance.
The trip wraps up with the
retirement of the old board and
the installation of the new
board. It’s a great thing to ex-
perience. Not only will our very
own Joanna Maruca be in-
stalled as our LTG, but David
Rodrigues will be running for
District Secretary! It promises to
be an exciting night.
Hey Key Clubbers! Just
recently I had the pleasure of
talking with yet another Key
Club senior who has helped
make this club what it is to-
day. Meet Alyssa Lancaster!
Dave: Hey Alyssa! Tell me,
what’s your position on the
Extended Board and what is
required of you?
Alyssa: Hey Dave! Well, I’m
the club’s membership direc-
tor and have the fairly large
task of keeping record of all
club member hours through-
out the year.
Dave: Wow, that’s a pretty big
job! Well, what event do you
think will/has attract(ed) the
most membership active-
ness?
Alyssa: Well, that’s a tough
one. I’d have to say the
Haunted House.
Dave: Cool, that’s what I
would have guessed. Now,
what’s the one activity that
you looked forward/looking
forward to this year?
Alyssa: Again, that’s a tough
question because we have so
many great activities. But, I
think the one I’m most look-
ing forward to is District Con-
vention. I can’t wait for all the
recognition after all of our
hard work.
Dave: Awesome! So, one last
question. What advice would
you give to those members
who wish to grow in Key
Club?
Alyssa: BE ACTIVE! Haha!
Show up to as many events
as possible and show your
Key Club spirit!
What does it mean to be a treasurer for our very own Bloomfield High School Key Club? Lots of counting and time with the advisors, that’s for sure. The responsibilities of a treasurer include trust more than anything. As treasurer you are in charge of keeping track of the money collected from each event. A treasurer must then report it to the club advisor and secretary. The second most important attribute a treasurer must have is the ability to handle money. Basically, you have to be good at counting and keeping records. As treasurer you have to maintain accurate financial records, inform the board about club costs, and present a strong budget incase needed. Being present at events such as membership night and concessions is a must. Above all you have
Serving as the secretary for our Bloomfield High School Key Club has been an honor. I highly recommend taking on the position for anyone who is interested, and I would love to talk about my position, the importance of Key Club, or answer any questions you might have! As Secretary, my primary responsibility is handling all of our club's reports, records, and correspondence. Every month, I am responsible for sending out a monthly report (CMRF) which covers everything our club has done that month (events, fundraising, projects), what we've done with the district (meetings, district events), special events (ICON, DCON, Key Leader, etc) and when our club has had meetings, board meetings, and interactions with the LTG. These reports are very important because they go to the district board secretary, the LTG, and the adults in charge of the New Jersey District. Besides the CMRF, as Secretary, I am responsible for send-ing out letters to those who have worked with our club and who have helped us. Since the position of secretary is one on the executive board, like all board positions, there is another set of responsibilities. Those include: Secretary-specific duties like taking notes at board meetings; helping to plan all club events, organizing committees, running club meetings, and making sure that you are present at all events possible. Best of luck to all applying and I look forward to teaching you the ropes once elected!
Hey guys! The end of the year is quickly creeping up on us and that means it is time to elect Bloomfield Key Club’s new Executive board. One of the most important positions is the Vice-President. Being the vice-president can be a tough job so if you are thinking about taking this position, don’t treat it lightly. Your job as the VP is to essentially help the other board members with anything that they need assistance with. Also, you are going to have to be good with emails and speaking to others face to face. As VP, it is your job to send out emails quite frequently about when there are meetings, events, or just what was discussed at the previous/upcoming meeting. Don’t forget that you will probably be approached by a few members asking questions about events and meetings so make sure you know what is going on and that you are able to inform everyone who doesn’t know what is going on. To all of those who still wish to try going for this position, I wish you the best! It is a tough role, but it all pays off in the end when you make some great friends and are able to say that you gave back to the community as much as you could. Good luck!
The position as Editor calls for a monthly newsletter as well as working with all executive
board members. You required to be at all events working side by side with everyone.
Not only that, but e-mail all members to write articles and ask for feedback. It’s a great
position to release your inner creativity!
Do You Have What it Takes To Be an Officer?
As president, you are the big boss. Planning all events and making sure they are executed
well. You run the general meetings as well as board meetings. To be in constant contact
with the advisor and fellow general members. Keep in mind, this position requires hours
of hard work and planning because it is the hardest. Though it all pays off in the end with
successful events. Good luck to those running for the position of President!

Lat Summer, our previous edi-
tor, Eric Szuhany, started an inter-
esting game of correcting the Edi-
tor of the Key Words! Well, it
proved to be extremely successful
and got people interested in read-
ing the bulletin. So, I have chosen
to keep the contest as a part of the
Key Words in hopes of keeping
Eric’s legacy somewhat instilled in
the bulletin and try to grab some
readers’ attention by finding a few
of my mistakes.
How it works is basically, for
ever correction you make in the
Key Words and tell me about, you
get a point for each correction you
have made. That is, if no one else
has made that correction as well.
Each month, a leader board will be
posted and you will all get to see
who’s who in the contest.
Finally, once all of the correc-
tions have been tallied up in June,
a winner will be determine and will
be awarded a prize that has yet to
be determined.
As of now, the leader board
look like:

Looks like Anthony’s in the

more mistakes in the next issue!

District Convention
Hey Key Clubbers! Do not forget money for the New Jersey District Con-
vention is due March 1st. You are not allowed to hand it in any later.
This is a great opportunity to see how well the club runs on a state level.
Also, you get to meet new people and learn great ideas for the next service
year. Not to forget, the theme is 1920s! So get your flapper dresses and
your Charleston on because we’re swinging our way into service!

Tutoring at Elementary Schools
Every Tuesday and Thursday we will be going to the elementary
