This week, there are two creativity prompts.

1. Harmonising & Reharmonising “Frère Jacques”

- Harmonisation:

What chord harmonises the entire melody of “Frère Jacques”? If you ignore the notes in brackets (passing notes and one auxiliary note), the chord becomes very clear.

- Ignore the notes in brackets - passing notes and one auxiliary note (nonchord tones)

- The chord becomes very clear

- Reharmonisation:

Choose different chords to harmonise each bar.

- For example, the first two bars contain the chord tones C and E. They could be the root and 3rd of a C chord – or the 3rd and 5th of an A minor chord - or the 5th and 7th of an FMaj7 chord.

- Experiment with including secondary dominant chords.

- Try mixing minor and major mode chords in the same harmonisation.

- You can even slightly alter the melodic line to fit a chord progression that you like.

2. Secondary Dominants

- Take any chord progression you’ve written in the last three weeks and either add or replace one of the chords with a secondary dominant chord.

Make sure it resolves correctly - the leading note resolves up by semitone.

- Experiment with the placement and number of secondary dominants.

Week 4 thursday

Today’s quick study piece is from Kleine Blumen, Op. 205, by Cornelius Gurlitt.

1. Label each chord using Roman numerals (i, iiº, III, iv, V (7), VI, VII or viiº). Take into account both hands when labelling chords. Look out for secondary dominant chords and label them accordingly.

2. Play the entire piece, keeping steady time. Notice the beautiful falling line created by the chord voicings in the left hand.
