Putting the ‘Home’ In Homework
Parent: ‘How was school today? Child: ‘OK’
Parent: ‘What did you do in school?’ Child: ‘Nothing’
Parent: ‘Do you have any homework to do?’ Child: ‘No.’
Is this a conversation that often takes place in your home? As a parent, are
you getting all of the information that you need to help your son or
daughter have a complete, successful school experience and to ensure that
school work brought home is addressed properly?
At King Fahad Academy, we believe that the education of a child is a
partnership between the school and home. For it to be successful, both parties must be informed and
actively involved. The following are some steps that can be taken at home to help your child have a
positive and successful school experience
1. SET A TIME FOR HOMEWORK. Establish a set time of day for homework to be done. Quite often, the
best time is shortly after your child has returned home after school. Give him/her some time to change
clothes, perhaps have a light snack for energy before starting to do the homework. The longer the time
between the end of school and starting the homework, the more difficult it may be for your child to refocus
on school work.
2. CREATE A SPACE. Create the right place in the home for homework to be done. This place should be well
lighted with a work space for writing, the necessary tools like pencils, pens, rubber, paper, etc. It should be
quiet and not have the distractions of TV, music, or activities from other family members.
3. BE AVAILABLE. Be available to answer questions and to assist and support the homework, when
needed. However, do not do the homework for your child. Rather, try to ask your son/daughter what part
of the homework they do understand and what part they don’t. Such questions will help you determine
how best you can help.
4. BE INVOLVED. Communicate with your son’s/daughters teachers regarding the homework assignments.
Write questions and comments in the Homework Diary for your child to show to a particular teacher.
5. ESTABLISH A ROUTINE. Establish the routine that there can always be productive homework. If your
son/daughter does not come home with any assigned homework on a given day, encourage him/her to
always have a library book checked out, or a newspaper or other reading material available to spend some
of the routine homework time with pleasure reading.
6. GIVE PRAISE. And finally, praise your child on their homework efforts. Praise will let your son/daughter
know that you believe homework is an important extension of what he/she does in school.

Anti-Bullying Week 2010
What is bullying? How is it defined? Where does it happen, and to whom? Those are just some of the
questions that are asked or thought about when discussing the murky depths of bullying.
The first question may seem obvious to some, but in reality
the word itself is rather obscure. One could understand the
word to mean physical or verbal abuse, taunting, spreading
rumours or all of them; including the use of mobiles and
online applications (e.g. text messaging or facebook). From
person to person, language to language, the concept of
bullying can differ greatly; for example the English word
“Bullying” has no direct translation in French!
As mentioned above the different types of bullying are
classified as Physical, Verbal, Psychological and Cyber
bullying respectively; all of which are equally serious and
(usually) overlap. In 2006 the charity BullyingUK conducted
a national bullying survey that suggested 69% of children in
the UK have reported being bullied at some point.
Unfortunately this statistic only represents the experiences
of victims who have spoken out; therefore does not provide
us with the full picture. From the Prime Minister to the Classroom assistant, all contribute to addressing
and tackling bullying in some way. Despite the many convoluted forms in which it appears, there is a very
strong and simple message that can cut through all of it: Tell someone! If it is happening to you, tell
someone you trust, e.g. your parents/guardians, teacher, friends or family. By sharing what is happening
with other people, you are reporting it and giving others the chance to help you.
It is all well and good saying that, but sometimes it can be a little embarrassing to tell a parent or teacher
all the details. So, I present to you “The Big Brother/Sister Scheme” to help facilitate greater peer-to-peer
support against bullying.
During the Anti Bullying Week 2010, I took the opportunity to introduce the new pilot scheme within the
King Fahad Academy through an assembly. Volunteers from across the grades and members of the Boys’
Council have been drafted and currently being trained to deliver this very simple but important message.
So, look out for your new “Big Brothers” (and soon, “Big Sisters”) who will be easily identified with their
unique badges, and log on to the Boys’ Council website www.boyscouncil.blogspot.com to help you and
receive more information on dealing with bullying; plus you can watch the assembly for yourself!
Keep calm, and carry on.
Remember that you are never alone, and that everyone is here to help.

Art Exhibition By Youcef Laraba
On 29th of March we had the opening of Youcef
Laraba’s exhibition for the IB examiner as well as for
teachers and students. For the first time, he had the
opportunity to display, show and explain a sample
of his two years IB Art studio work as well as his
investigation sketchbooks. In the exhibition, the
visitors had the chance to observe different kinds of
art work like paintings, drawings, sculptures and
videos. It was our honour and pleasure to see many
teachers and students visiting the exhibition. Based
on their comments and feedback, especially those
from the IB examiner, they all seemed to enjoy it. We
promise we will have even more successful
exhibitions in the future. Thank you all for your help
and support.

Rope Skipping For Healthy Hearts
The British Heart Foundation is an organisation originally founded by a group of cardiologists whose aim
was to combat increased heart disease. Their vision is a world in which people do not die prematurely of
cardiovascular disease through pioneering research and raising public awareness of the issue.
Our assembly, organised by the Student Council and P.E. teacher, Mr. Walid Zaky, had an aim to raise
student awareness on the necessity of maintaining a healthy heart. We learned that it is relatively easy to
do so through simple exercises like skipping or even walking. Another example would be introducing a
healthy diet into your lifestyle. After all, you are what you
eat!
We had a panel of judges, consisting of Mr. Yusri Farrah,
Mr. Bill Parks, Mr. Amir El-Dessouki and Student Council
President, Yasser Abdurrahman Hussein. Their job was to
observe a number of the academy’s best students at
skipping rope in various aspects. They judged them in
various rounds on things like speed, skill and group co-
ordination. Many teachers and students who witnessed the
competition sponsored participants to raise funds for the
British Heart Foundation. At the end of the event, these
students had raised a total of over £750 pounds to give to
the Foundation.

National Science & Engineering Week
KFA chapter – 2010
National Science & Engineering Week is an annual event organised by the science department, with the
active support of the management of the King Fahad Academy, under the directorship of Dr Sumaya
Alyusuf.
The aims and objectives of celebrating this nationwide annual event at the academy are as follows:
• To generate curiosity in science for all our pupils,
• To inculcate and enhance creativity in our pupils,
• To provide opportunity for hands-on experience on selected activities,
• To demonstrate some concepts/ideas from school science,
• To demonstrate the application of science in solving real life situations/problems,
• To promote a sense of confidence and self-reliance,
• To develop such social skills as: taking responsibility, effective communication, and working well
with others.
• To stretch out beyond our borders in participating in national events, along with other schools
throughout the UK.
• To raise the profile of science in the KFA.
The science committee decided the choice for this year’s theme:
‘The Human machine: A – Z’
The weeklong celebration began with an exciting evaluation presentation by the IB students from the
group 4 subject area. We were thrilled by the amazing display of experimental and analytical skills in
identifying aspects of honey. We were fascinated by their transformation from curious students to real
scientists, well equipped with the tools of the trade: some kudos for the IB programme and their teachers!
This presentation was followed by a discussion presentation on: ‘Tuning the human Body’
By grade 10(G). This was thoroughly informative. We now very much appreciate the advantages of using
natural products as opposed to synthetic ones. We will also heed the advice on the dangers of radiation
and ultra-violet rays.

The King Fahad Academy Newsletter – May 2010 7
The next day’s event was a visit to the Science Museum by all the grade 10 pupils, under the auspices of
Mrs Wafa & Ms Carina; and Mr Fudail & Dr Mahesh). They were very much fascinated by the display on
the contributions of Islamic Science to modern civilisation.
The academy community was presented with a debate session on organ donation by grade 10G: ‘To give
or not to give’.
Thursday offered a unique opportunity for a group of pupils representing grade 10 to attend this year’s
Science conference, as part of the National Science Conference, accompanied by Mrs Heba & Mr Baba. Our
pupils participated in real life decision-making processes on the kind of choice that medical practitioners
make every day.
They were captivated by the presentation lecture by Professor Oxford, a world leader on viruses. Now we
know that indeed, size does not matter: how come a virus consisting of fewer than 10 genes could cause so
much havoc to a human with over 250,000 functional genes?
Friday was the grand finale for the week-long programme. The entire school population from grades 3
upwards, attended and indeed participated. We were entertained by a drama/song by grade 4 (G) pupils,
supervised by their teachers: Mrs Nazek & Mrs Safa.
This was followed by the Science quiz competition in the form inter-house challenge. This event was full of
passion and suspense, as everyone wanted to participate. As two houses tied up positions as winners, this
part of the event is postponed to the next housing event to pick out the winning house. The suspense
continues!
The final event on the programme was the Award ceremony. The members of the science department
have held a vigorous search and discussion to pick out the Scientist of the year (boys) and (girls); the
emerging Scientist of the year (boys) & (girls), and the nominees for this choice. The criteria ranged from
interest in science, work output, attitude to science, role-model and self-assessment by all the nominees,
all videotaped and presented to the audience. We are pleased to announce the winners and nominees as:
Scientist of the Year 2010 (Boys)

Science as sweet as honey
The presentation that took place on the 15th of March was in response to the assessment of the group 4
project, in which all IB students were obliged to participate. Our thematic focus was the study of honey,
where we investigated the Chemistry, Biology and Physics aspects of honey.
We began by planning and assigning different roles to each student. A leader from each science group was
responsible for organising meetings and assigning sub-roles to each student. All presentations were very
diverse in nature and were unique. The Chemistry group presented an investigation on the difference
between adulterated honey and pure honey. The group also showed live visual experiments on both types
of honey, and concluded that manufactured honey can be detected by its excess water, carbon content
and viscosity. So don’t be fooled by what’s written on your jar of honey!
As for the physics group, they enlightened the
audience with the perspective of honey in
physics. The group demonstrated the refractive
index values of the two types of honey. They
illustrated this with a wonderful humorous play
which shocked us all with their creative
approach. Moreover, the biology group
discussed the significance of honey and how
healthy it can be for our bodies. The group also
discussed the cosmetic side of honey and its
presence in our beauty products, showing the
different compositions of honey and how vital
these components are to our health. This was
presented through an informative presentation
which demonstrated excellent group work and
collaboration.
The group 4 project has given us a great
opportunity to engage in experimental
investigations and learn different types of
presentation skills. This allowed us to put our
teamwork skills into practice. Not forgetting that
we achieved our personal skill grades in a way
which we have enjoyed ourselves and received a
medal!

AMSUK: Teacher of the year Award
The king Fahad Academy is delighted to announce that Mohammed Baba, team
leader, science department, has secured the second place at the teacher of the year
annual award nomination held at Madani School, in Leisceter. This event was
organised by the Association of Muslim Schools in UK, under the sponsorship of
HSBC.
This is a milestone in the history of the KFA and an indication that hard work,
dedication and selfless service to duty will always be recognised and duly rewarded,
internally and externally.
We also recognised that there are many colleagues equally considered for this nomination, however, the
overwhelming consensus point to Mohammed Baba for the following exemplary qualities:
• Devotion to teaching and to the enrichment of pupils’ potential and learning experience
• A truly ‘everyone matters’ approach to teaching
• A 100% attendance to school, yearly, comes rain or shine
• Development of the science department to play a key role in raising the profile of science in the
academy
• Introducing strategies and initiatives enabling our pupils to reach out beyond our border, to engage
and participate in national and regional events and so, extending learning beyond the classroom
• Participating in Science conferences, enabling superb achievement by our pupils: 1st prize:
Mohannad Abdulghani (2008); Saryah Alhejazi (2009)’ as well as participation in national science
essay competition (Hannah Mohy-Eldin)
• Promoting an atmosphere of trust and good working relationship in the science department
We are pleased by the healthy work-ethics and his tireless efforts to promote teaching and learning and to
raise the status of the academy as a centre for excellence in learning.

The Magic of Computer Science
Lecturers from the Queen Mary University visited The King
Fahad Academy in February to host “The Magic of Computer
Science” show. The aim of the show was to reveal how
fundamental computer science methods are the real power
behind some cunning conjuring effects. Students took part in
the show by trying to figure out the secrets, and then learn how
some great tricks work. The show highlighted how maths and
computer science make the 'magic' of modern technology
work. At the end of the show each student was handed out a
pack of cards and a card tricks book so that they can practice for themselves at home.
World Book Day
The Academy celebrated World Book Day for the entire
week of March 1st to the 5th.
The whole school took part in a Drop Everything and Read
(D.E.A.R.) activity by stopping to read for ten minutes
every morning. The effect was a relaxing start to each
day.
The Upper students guessed which teachers had been
caught reading, with the incentive of some sweet prizes
for correct guesses.
Once again our primary students enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters on Friday. It was
a pleasure to see just how inventive some students had
been in order to portray their favourite character.
Book prizes were awarded for the most original outfits.
World Book Day vouchers were distributed to students
to enable them to purchase special £1 books at their
local booksellers.
Events like these remind us all of how valuable reading
is and how it forms the cornerstone that most other
learning is based upon.
