Humidtropics Kiboga/Kyankwanzi platform Report

1. HUMIDTROPICS SUMMARY

Humidtropics, a research program is a global initiative that helps poor farm families, particularly led by women, in

tropical Africa, Asia and Americas to boost their income from integrated agricultural systems’ intensification

while preserving their land for future generations.

It was launched in Uganda on the 1st of August 2013 where up to sixty different stakeholders from different

sectors met to discuss how to work together to improve smallholders livelihoods. The importance to change our

mind set to a system approach was raised from the beginning as well as the need to pass on knowledge

effectively to farmers so they can make informed decisions. From this first meeting four field sites were

selected: Kiboga-Kyankwanzi, Masaka-Rakai, Mukono-Wakiso and Luwero-Nakaseke.

For each of these sites NARO and Makerere University with help of local facilitators at every site will facilitate

inceptions meetings with the aim to develop local R4D platforms with local stakeholders.

Kiboga-Kyankwanzi was the first location to launch the Humidtropics program at site level. The inception

meeting took place at Kiboga Town on the 22nd

August 2013 with 50 participants coming from different sectors.

On the 6th

of February 2014 a workshop was held in Kiboga to create the R4D Platform (research for

development) Committee and the entry points were selected.

This report tries to capture all the discussions and outcomes from the workshop.

2. GROUP WORK

The participants were divided into 4 groups and each one followed one of the following themes:

Theme 1: Food security

Theme 2: Nutrition & Health

5

Theme 3: Poverty Reduction

Theme 4: Natural Resource Management

Each group had to answer the following questions:

1. What are the pressing agricultural issues in Kiboga-Kyankwanzi?

2. Among the listed pressing issues what are the most three pressing ones? Why?

3. What are the relevant organizations contributing to the pressing issues?

4. What activities are undertaken by the different organizations to address these issues? And where they

are implemented.

5. What new ideas can be used to undertake the above activities for better results?

GROUP 1: Theme: Food Security

Definition food security: Food security refers to having enough, different foods for home consumption & for sale all year

around. E.g. roof crops, cereals, fresh foods, vegetables, etc.

1. What are the pressing agricultural issues in Kiboga-Kyankwanzi?

- Declining soil fertility

- Unpredictable weather changes/rainfall (low)

- Land tenure system

- Increased of pests and diseases and incidents of wildlife

- Lack of storages facilities

- Lack of knowledge and skills in intensive farming practices

- Poor attitude towards farming (youth interested in other business)

- Fake inputs on markets and high prices

- Low income (poverty)

- Increasing human population.

2. Among the listed pressing issues what are the most three pressing ones? Why?

a) Lack of knowledge and skills in improved farming technologies uses.

o Soil and water management

o Post harvest handling

o Pests & diseases control

Why: Land/soil is a factor pf production and is a key determinant to crop yield.

b) Fake agro inputs & high costs for agro inputs

Why: Losses, poor yield, low resistance to weather , pests & diseases hence poor yields.

c) Increasing human population and poor attitude towards farming

o Labour force – youth

6

o Land fragmentation = small acreages

3. What are the relevant organizations contributing to the pressing issues?

a) Government Programs

o NAADS

o Wealth creation/veterans

o NARO

o Luwero/Rwenzori

b) NGOs

o World Vision

o KDFA

o Hunger Projects

o CARTAS

o Heifer/ADD

o AEC

4. What activities are undertaken by the different organizations to address these issues? And where they

are implemented.

- Community mobilize, sensitization and involvement in all programs through co-funding ownerships

sustainability

- Regular monitoring by the production staff & training of agro-inputs dealers and attendants in

collaborations with UNADA and MAAIF

- Mass sensitization (creation of awareness on inputs quality & gazette quality input shop in local

governments)

GROUP 2: Theme: Nutrition & Health

1. What are the pressing agricultural issues in Kiboga-Kyankwanzi?

- Pests and diseases

- Drought / Climate Change

- Soil exhaustion

- Scarcity of casual labour force. Workers coming from Kabale and Rwanda to work in agriculture

- Scarcity of improved seeds/and stocking inadequate materials.

- Lack of knowledge on proper nutrition

- Gender inequalities in the households

2. Among the listed pressing issues what are the most three pressing ones? Why?

- Establishment of user demonstrations actions

- In case of giving out inputs, co-funding by the beneficiaries is important for sustainability.

- Conducting of exchange visits to equip them with new ideas

- Research linkages (farmers & research institutions (important to get feedback to farmers)

- Nutritional platform on district & subcounty level

GROUP 3: Theme: Poverty Reduction

1. What are the pressing agricultural issues in Kiboga-Kyankwanzi?
