Saturday, Day 2

KICK OFFWhat attitudes to the body do these quotes reflect?

“your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.”― Anthony Bourdain, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly

“Whatever happens to your body, your soul will survive, untouched...” ― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

“I am not my body. My body is nothing without me.” ― Tom Stoppard, Rock 'n' Roll

How do people’s actions show their attitudes to bodies (their own and others)?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?The Bible has a lot to say about the human body. Here is a (long) list of passages which touch on the topic. Some of them contribute a lot to the Biblical teaching, others mention bodies. Divide them up between your group and find out what they say. Your group will develop a mind map together. Add to the map the ideas you find in each passage, you might want to quote some words from the passage or summarise the point in your own words. Look for connections between ideas that the group finds. Highlight passages which are particularly interesting or important and share them with the group once you have finished the survey.

Genesis 2:7, 21-23Genesis 3:16–19Job 2:7; 7:5Job 10:11Psalm 38:4-11Psalm 103:15-16Psalm 139:15-16Proverbs 14:30Songs 5:10-16; 7:1-9Matthew 5:29-30Matthew 6:25–34

Saturday, Day 2

What are the big ideas which you see in this survey? Add those to the mind map if they are not already clear.

SUMMING UPHow does the Bible’s view of bodies fit with the theme of the ‘image of God’?

Why is it important for the gospel that Jesus rose physically and will return physically?

Why is God interested in bodies?

How can our view of our own bodies and others’ go wrong? How is God’s view of bodies different to common views in our culture?

SO WHAT?Body responsibilities Body challenges Body blessings

Use this to think together about how Christians should view our bodies. What should we do for and with our bodies? (e.g. get sleep, use to serve others)

What are some of the challenges which Christians face in the way we view bodes? These might relate to the responsibilities or be traps we need to avoid.

What can we thank God for about our bodies? (e.g. enjoying the world with our senses, hope of resurrection)

Sunday, Day 3

John 10:1-18

Discussion questions

Independence vs. authority 1. Do you want to be ‘free’ and ‘independent’? Why or why not?

To be ‘independent’ means you don’t need to rely on anyone for anything. The flip side of this is – you take the risk that when you’re in trouble, no-one will be there to help you.

2. Have you ever been in some kind of trouble, and no-one was there to help you? How did it feel?

3. So – do you still want to be ‘independent’? Why or why not?

4. Do you want to be ‘free’ and ‘independent’ from God? Why or why not?

Suspicion vs. trust 1. Think of a time when someone lied to you, or you suspected someone of lying to you or

trying to manipulate you in some way. How did you feel? How did it affect your relationship with that person?

2. Think of a time when someone kept their word and were there to help you when you needed them. How did you feel? How did it affect your relationship with that person?

The Bible talks a lot about ‘faith’. Christians talk a lot about ‘faith’.

3. What do you think ‘faith’ is?

4. Is it cool to ‘have faith’ in Jesus? Is it ‘fashionable’ today? Why or why not?

Sunday, Day 3‘Faith’ is not a uniquely ‘religious’ word. It basically means to trust someone or something. Everyone has faith. The only questions are – who or what do you have faith in? And do they deserve that faith?

5. What are some non-religious people or things you ‘have faith’ in? Think about your activities during the last couple of hours. Who or what have you ‘trusted’, usually without thinking about it?

6. Did the people or things you trusted deserve your trust? How did they earn your trust?

7. Do you trust Jesus? Why or why not?

8. What do you trust Jesus to do? Why do you trust him to do these things?

Enjoy life 1. If you had unlimited money, and Covid19 didn’t exist, what fun thing/s would you like to do

right now?

2. What are the main things on your ‘bucket list’? What things do you really feel like you have to achieve before you die?

Australian culture, like other ‘Western’ cultures, has become deeply ‘secularised’. That means we are trained to believe that this world, and our present experience of life, is all that exists. There is no heaven or hell, no God or Satan or angels or demons. The physical, natural world is all that exists.

Therefore, we have to enjoy life to the full right now, before we die. Because there is no ‘heaven’ to look forward to, or ‘hell’ to be afraid of. 3. Have you come across these secular beliefs? How have you been exposed to them? How

have they affected you?

4. Do you believe them? Why or why not?

5. What do you think of Jesus’ claim to possess ‘eternal life’?

6. What do you think about the Bible’s claim that Jesus rose from the dead?

Bible passages on Jesus as our shepherd Read Mark 10:42-45.

1. What does it tell us about earthly leadership? Does that sound right to you?

Sunday, Day 3

2. What does it tell us about Jesus as our leader?

3. Would you trust earthly leadership? Why or why not?

4. Would you trust Jesus to be your leader? Why or why not?

Read Philippians 2:1-13.

1. How attitudes should we have towards each other?

2. What attitudes should we avoid?

3. Is it easy to have those positive attitudes towards each other? Why or why not?

4. Is it easy to avoid those negative attitudes? Why or why not?

How is Jesus an example to follow?

Monday, Day 4

KICK OFFHow are you like your parents? In appearance? In personality? In character?

WHO ARE WE?Read 1 John 3:1-3

How would John answer the question ‘Who am I?’ (v.1)

Why are we able to be called God’s children?

When Christ appears, who will Christians be like? (v.2)

What will it look like to be like Jesus?

What difference does that hope make to how we live now? (v.3)

Read 1 Peter 1:13-16

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, what two characteristics should describe our minds? On what should we set our hope? (v.13)

Peter then describes followers of Jesus as God’s children. What change are we then asked to make? (v.14)

How should our character be like our Father? (v.15-16)

Read Ephesians 5:1-2

If we are God’s children, whose example are we to follow, and what does that look like?

‘Holy’ basically means ‘set apart’. For God to be holy, means that he is completely other, separate from his creation and perfect in his otherness—perfectly righteous, perfectly faithful, perfectly loving…For people to be holy means to be set apart for God, distinctively marked out for him, different from others—which means seeking to be like God, in righteousness, faithfulness and love etc.Think of a toothbrush. It is set apart for one purpose—to clean your teeth. So you don’t use it to clean the toilet, or to tickle the dog, to scratch your back. If you did it would not be reflecting the purpose for which it was made. When we act in ways that don’t reflect the purpose for which God set us apart, we dishonour the holy God who set us apart.

Monday, Day 4LIVING IT OUT

Read through Ephesians 4:17 - 5:20, identifying and noting on the table below behaviours that Christians are to ‘put off’ and ‘put on’.

Put off Put on

As a child of God, what on the list do you need to put off?

What on the list of holy living do you need to put on?

You know that friend—the one everyone always bags out. But they laugh along with you. They're fine with it. I'm sure they are. They enjoy it too, right? As a child of God, how should you relate to this friend?

There’s a big party happening. Everyone in your year is going. It’s going to be great! A night that will be remembered forever. But your Aunt’s 48th birthday dinner is on the same night and your Dad says you have to go to that. As a child of God, how are you going to respond?

PRAYSpend time in prayer, confessing how you are not holy and asking for God’s Holy Spirit to empower you to grow in holiness. Be specific about areas you need to change.
