What a wonderful start to the year we’ve had! We have so enjoyed meeting all of your little children. They are pre-

cious! We have spent this month getting to know each other and getting your little ones comfortable with their new routines. We LOVE our daily stroller ride. All of the kiddos grab their favorite animal or blanket and we head outside. Some may doze comfortably on the walk while others enjoy pointing out birds, flowers, and waving to the nice church ladies. Playground time is also another favorite of the Toddlers. They are digging sand and learning how to put the sand into a bucket. We take turns swinging with our friends. Music class with Ms. Hayley has been so much fun, too. They are trying their hand at small instruments and the giant drum. We are learn-ing to march in a circle. Our other activities this month included weighing and measuring the kids so we can see just how much they grow. We also had a great time making hand prints with paint. We are look-ing forward to next month and hopefully some cooler weather. :)

September has been a wonderful month in the two year old classroom. The children have adjusted to the school routine and

are enjoying our activities, and everyone is settling in for a great year. Our first unit was School is Fun. The children listened to a story about Spot going to school and got to use brightly colored masking tape and their fine motor skills to make a collage. The next unit was I am Special. The children learned that they were wonderfully made by God. They listened to the story I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont and sang “I Am Special.” During art, the children colored an art holder for their refrigerator at home. Then the classes moved on to the much loved animal units. We started with pets and moved to farm animals. With the pet unit, the children talked about different animals we could keep at home and the care they would take. They sorted cats and dogs and during art painted spots on a dog. The farm unit was especially fun as it coincides with the Comal County Fair. The children discovered some of the prod-ucts that animals provide for us. During art they had fun finger painting muddy pigs. Outside of our classroom, the children have had such a good time with Ms. Hayley in music class. Animal Action and the Freeze Dance are definitely favorites. During the rain, the children loved playing in the gym, riding motorcycles, kicking balls and pushing the baby strollers. The children have also had so much fun on our playground. They love to dig in the sandbox, climb and slide and drive the cars to many places. I am so blessed to be able to spend some time with these children and I can’t wait to see where this year takes us. Amy Merritt

Why is Reading Aloud to Children Important?

It helps them acquire information and skills they need in life, such as:

Knowledge of printed letters and words, and the re-lationship between sound and print.

The meaning of many words. How books work, and a variety of writing styles. The world in which they live. The difference between written language and everyday conversation. The pleasure of reading.

What a great start we had to our new year! Our first few weeks of school were exciting and busy. Everyone is

settling into the class routine and getting to know old friends again and making new friends, too! We are working hard at learning our numbers, staying in line, keeping items in the centers and transitioning quietly. We are so proud of all the children. They have really enjoyed going to Chapel and music class with Ms. Hayley. Our first unit of the year was shapes. We focused on learning about a different shape each day. Our daily snacks were even a learning experience as some snacks were the shape of the day. We found circles, squares, rectangles and more around the school and painted stars, put squares on a graph to learn one-to-one correspondence, and made two triangles into a diamond. Our Shape books turned out great! We hope you read them with your child. During our County Fair unit and our Farm unit was a great time to discuss what animals live on the farm, what they eat, and where they would live on the farm. Lots of fun was had making the animals for our bulle-tin board. We hope you enjoyed them! Fair day was so exciting! Dressing in our western clothes, making butter to go on some delicious rolls and learning about roping. Yee Haw!! Thank you to Tripp’s parents for making it so much fun for the kids! The children are really working on their gross and fine motor skills by painting on the easel, working with playdough and other fun activities in the rooms. October will find us busy learning about apples, fire safety and harvest. Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Bobbi Adams and Jobie Wetsel

It has been an exciting start to the new year! The children are settling in nicely and learning the school day routines.

They were introduced to all of the learning centers in our classrooms: reading, blocks & manipula-tives, writing, art, dramatic play, and circle time. Children learn so much through play, and it has been fun watching them interact and get comfortable with our new friends at school.

We started out with an “All About Me” Theme. We discussed things that we share that are alike and different such as hair and eye color, where we live, our families and pets and we weighed and measured everyone. We read The Napping House by Audrey Wood and brainstormed about who

and what we find in each of our homes. We practiced writing our names and talked about some of our favorite things like colors, foods and books. We ended the month learning about the County Fair and Cowboys and Cowgirls. All week we

worked on creating our individual stick horses. On Fair Day, we made our own butter and ate it with delicious rolls for a special snack and we had a great time learning about how to rope steers like real cowhands!

The letters we focused on this month were Ll, Oo, Gg Hh, Pp, Aa and Nn. We read specific books for each letter, discussed the way each letter should be written and how it sounds. We also learned fun songs to go along with each letter. Our days together are busy and fun!

What a wonderful beginning to our kindergarten

year! We came together singing songs about the al-

phabet, numbers, and RAIN! We enjoyed getting to know each other with our All About Me unit.

Families contributed a scrapbook page full of wonderful memories that we now keep in our Housekeep-

ing Center. It’s a wonderful home-school connection that we’ve all enjoyed! We learned about our 5

Senses and how they help keep us safe and become wonderful scientists. We conducted many hearing,

seeing, touching, listening, and tasting experiments throughout the month. The students know that they

will continue to use their 5 senses as they learn about the wonderful world God created.

We ended September learning about apples and the Comal County Fair. We made books, sorted,

measured, compared, and graphed all things apple! We even made some applesauce! Yum! Yum! The

students really enjoyed our roping demonstration as we prepared for a Comal County tradition, the Fair!

Yee Haw!

I want to send a very special thank you to Christina Kondret, Reagan Parks, and Melissa Ashabranner

who hosted our first staff luncheon. With the contributions of all our kindergarten parents, they served up

a delicious Mexican lunch with beautiful succulent gifts for all the staff to enjoy! Also, a big thank you

to Kari Behrens, Leona Scull-Hons, and Peachy Robinson who helped plan our field trip to downtown

New Braunfels for a day full of magic and learning about our community! Jessica Harley

We are off to a great start in music! We are having so much fun with singing, movement and

dancing, and learning new songs. It has been so wonderful to meet each and every child and see the joy on their faces as they enjoy the music. We have been getting to know our new friends and reac-quainting with old friends. During Fair week we rode stick horses, learned the Hokey Pokey and sang lots of Cowboy songs. The children have worked really hard to learn Chapel songs and the Finger Prayer and I’ve enjoyed teaching them and watching them learn the prayers and songs. In October, we will sing about firefighters and fire trucks during our Fire Safety week. For our Harvest celebration, we will play fun music games and sing songs about fat pumpkins, wiggly scarecrows and itsy bitsy and GREAT BIG spiders. Be sure to make your calendars for the Christmas program on December 6th at 12:00 noon. The Three year olds, Pre-K and Kin-dergarten classes will be singing songs to get you in the Christmas spirit. You won’t want to miss it! Our Two year olds will perform on December 5th and 6th at 9:15 a.m. with refreshments served to our guests and children in the classroom after the morning performance. Be sure to make plans to

join us for the Christmas fun! Hayley Marsh

We are very blessed at Kid’s Day Out to have such strong support from our parents and

church. The KDO Advisory Board welcomed our staff before school began with a lovely salad luncheon. It was a

great start to getting ready for your children. At our first staff meeting, the Kindergarten class treated us to a

delicious Mexican theme lunch. Thank you to all the parents in the class for their contributions!

Our Comal County Fair Day was great fun! Thank you to Donnie and Katie Vestal for demonstrating calf roping.

Donnie was very patient and encouraging, giving all children who wanted to a chance to try their hand at roping, too!

We are very appreciative of the donations we received this month from Sarah Blake, Carla Thompson, Rachel

Witek, Tina Lindeman, Marsha Johnson and Anne Heckendorn, as well as, treats for our staff from Jill Ybarra.

Last but not least, I would like to thank our incredible staff for such a good start to the school year. They are

committed to your children and to providing optimal learning opportunities each day. Thank you for sharing your

precious children with us!
