A note from the Rabbi & CantorHow do you turn a Congregation into a Community, & a Community into a Family? One of the things we hear most from congregants is that, some-times, TBE can feel like a collection of strangers, rather than a commu-nity of widespread and deep relationships. To be sure, we are proud of our wonderfully heymish atmosphere, and many of our members have extensive networks of local friends and family, both within and beyond our congregation. But many more of our members are not as fortunate. These folks may have no one with whom to sit when they come to synagogue; indeed, they may have no way to get to the temple at all. They may receive fewer calls or visits when they are sick, homebound, or bereaved; they may have no one checking in on them at all. As a result, they report feeling isolated and lonely, longing for the support of a caring community. At its essence, a Jewish congregation should be a supportive com-munity, where we all care for each other. Many people join congre-gations specifically for that reason, to be part of a caring community. Conversely, many people leave congregations because the communi-ty is insufficiently present for them in times of need. Caring Crews, a new initiative we have been working on, aims to radically shift our congregational culture at Temple Beth-El, helping us become an inclusive, supportive, and deeply intertwined community. TBE’s Caring Crews will provide structured opportunities for members of the congregation to care for and support their fellow congregants in meaningful ways. Over the next few months, we hope you will join us in this initiative. There will be many ways of getting involved. We plan on starting with a Phone Crew. Members of our Phone Crew will make phone calls to those who are ill or homebound. In time, we plan on expanding the initiative, building a Visiting Crew, which will visit those in need; a Bereavement Crew, to comfort and support those who have lost a loved one. We also hope to build a Driving Crew, to transport con-gregants in need to and from synagogue services and programs; a Shabbat Crew, to welcome and include others at Shabbat services; and other “crews” of congregants caring for other congregants.
We hope you'll join us on this endeavor, nurturing a community that celebrates together in times of joy and weeps together in times of sorrow. Remember: you can’t spell community without Y-O-U. Please email us and let us know if you would like to be involved. Relatedly, we have created an online form so that we can quickly and efficiently be made aware of needs within the congregation. Anyone can submit a request, even anonymously, when you or someone you know is in need of a call or a visit by clergy or a volunteer in the commu-nity. With your friend/loved one's permission, please feel free to use it: bethelrichmond.org/form/caringcrews With the help of TBE’s Caring Crews, we can build a community where each of us could enter the synagogue — on a Friday evening, on a Shabbat morning, on the High Holy Days — and truly know the other people sitting in the pews, where we are all connected to each other, where we all celebrate together, where we all support each oth-er. We can be there for each other in the good times and in the chal-lenging times. As many say when raising a child, ‘It takes a village,’ and together, we can be that village for each person that comes through Beth-El’s doors. As you can probably tell, we are very excited about this project. We hope it excites you, too. Please do let us know how you want to be a part of it along with any constructive ideas to help make this ini-tiative work. Please email us if you are interested in participating, and if you have thoughts or questions. We look forward to continuing the conversation and working with many of you to help our community flourish over time.

Adult Education OfferingsOne Evening of Liberation Spiritual Preparation for Passover Led by Rabbi Knopf Wednesday, March 11, 7:30-9pm, Grove Ave. RSVP online bethelrichmond.org/event/passoverWorkshop
According to the Haggadah, “In every generation a person is obligated to see him or herself as if he or she went out of Egypt.” According to this view, Passover is not just a story of our ancestors. We are called upon to see it as our story too. In this moment, we are enslaved in some Egypt, and are being offered the possibility of redemption. Join Rabbi Knopf for a special workshop based on his new book Thirty Days of Liberation to explore how we can discover pathways for personal and social liberation in Passover and the Exodus story.

Have you ever found yourself confused or distracted during prayer? Are you looking for an explanation of our prayer services? Do you yearn for a greater understanding of all the Hebrew you hear at synagogue? The focus of this class will be on particular components of the Shabbat liturgy that are ingrained in our worship, with a focus on learning the text and melodies of the prayers in our siddur (prayerbook). All levels are welcome and Hebrew literacy is not required. Come to any or all sessions!

What is Hametz? Wheat, oats, rye, barley, or spelt be-came hametz (fermented) if they came in contact with water for 18 minutes af-ter harvesting. The term hametz is also applied to dishes and utensils which have been in contact with hametz foods during the year. The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz during Pesach. Therefore, we arrange for mekhiratz hametz, the sale of the hametz to a non-Jew. This transfer is accomplished by appointing an agent, the rabbi, to handle the sale. It is a valid and legal transfer of own-ership. At the end of the holiday, the agent arranges for the reversion of the ownership of the non-allowed hametz. If the ownership of the hametz was not transferred before the holiday, the use of the hametz is prohibited after the holiday as well. The form below allows for the funds provided to the needy for Pass-over foods.

Wednesday, April 1 • 7:30pm Temple Beth-El, 3330 Grove Ave.
In his new book, Politics is for Power: How to Move Beyond Political Hobbyism, Take Action, and Make Real Change, Eitan Hersh diagnoses the problem of citizens spending an hour or more every day consuming news and politics on social media but no time working in civic and political organizations to empower their values. Hersh juxtaposes shallow forms of engagement (“political hobbyism”) with inspiring stories of volunteer organizers from different parts of the political world who got into the trenches of political activity. Through empathy, trust-building, and persistence, these volunteers escaped the melancholy of spinning their wheels on political hobbyism to make a difference in the world.

News from Brown Religious School Ramona Brand, Director of Youth Learning
For now the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The blossoms have appeared in the land. February’s mild weather presented us with multiple opportunities to celebrate Tu B’shevat centered on the wonder of nature. Our Pre-K through 1st grade students taste-tested fruits, veggies and chocolate and delighted in the color changing magic of their grape juice
during a bountiful Seder. Other students ‘dug up’ their gardening skills by planting parsley seeds, which they hope will grow to use at their Passover Seders. Students deepened their connection to prayer text on an Uvlechtecha B’derech walk through the Nature Center. They used contemplative text to find new ways to understand the V’ahavta. Other groups were fascinated with a “Why is Torah like a Tree” observation walk and learned how the Torah is made from fully organic materials. 3rd and 4th graders used the Nature Center as inspiration to write their own psalms, just as King David did at Ein Gedi! As the weather continues to warm up and our Nature Center wakes up, we will enjoy more learning from our Nature Center. In March we will be welcoming an educator from the Amir Project, who will spend several Sundays with our students exploring Flora and Torah! In April we will continue to incorporate our environmental connections into studies of Passover and Spring holidays and helping others! On Sunday, April 26, our Ruach and Kadima Youth Groups will have an opportunity to assist in a Richmond Community Garden. There is always someone wonderful to learn from the natural world around us.
Thank you Men’s Club!! The Religious School is the beneficiary of a very generous donation from the Men’s Club that enabled us to purchase new classroom furniture for our 6th and 7th grade classroom. We have been able to replace dated and cumbersome “fixed position” desks with new tables and bright chairs for better grouping and project capabilities. We’ve also added a comfortable soft chair for the reading corner. Thanks to all the members of the Men’s Club who have made this donation possible. Enhancing our classrooms bolters our students’ learning. The desks that were in the classroom have been donated to Richmond Public Schools where they will most certainly be put to good use.
Learning about Jewish American History in a most “deli”cious way: 6th and 7th graders will be hitting the road for a year end field trip to the Beth Ahabah Museum and Archives as a culmination of their study of Jewish American History in the 20th and 21st Century. A guided tour through BAMA’s Exhibitions will provide interesting insight into the impact of notable Jewish contributions to Richmond, Virginia and our country. The morning will conclude with a lunch at Perley’s Restaurant in downtown Richmond for an edible lesson in the culture of Jewish delicatessen foods! YUM!

A big thank you to all who have chosen to join Sisterhood for 2020! Member-ship dues are one of the ways we fundraise to meet our goal of supporting the TBE Community through the synagogue and the school.
Thank you to Norma and Josephine for setting up and providing refreshments for our February Coffee Klatch with speaker Bill Selvey and to Barbara Shocket for planning the event. We had a nice group of folks attend the event and stay afterwards to catch up with each other.
We are planning our annual Donor event which will be held on April 26th at Grove Ave. Our featured speaker will be Rutledge Dennis (details on next page).
We’re also planning a big sale at the Myra B. Danzing Gift Shop at Parham to coincide with this year’s annual meeting on Sunday, May 3rd at 10am.
As you may have heard from me over the last several years at the TBE Annu-al Meeting, Sisterhood has been facing dwindling membership, dwindling participation at programs, fewer volunteers, and a lack of new leadership. We have tried several ways to change our programming including doing fewer Sisterhood-specific programs and supporting more TBE programs. We hosted a small focus group in the fall which was facilitated by Judy Gary. Some of the feedback we received from this small but diverse group was that they are not necessarily looking for programming from us. The broader survey of temple membership conducted last year also pointed to folks looking for more time to gather together socially including fun activities instead of more education-al programming. I feel there is a strong need to build more community here at Temple Beth El and there are many ways we can accomplish this.
Since Men’s Club has had some similar struggles, we are both working on what the future of our organizations should be, where we can merge with the temple to support the types of programs our community is looking for, and how we can serve our diverse population without specific labels that make folks feel like they can only attend certain programs. How we navigate this path will be communicated as we determine what it will be. If you would like to share your feedback, please feel free to email me at [email protected], call me at 804-677-7313, or send me a note at: 5701 Oak Mill Court, Glen Allen, VA 23059. I would love to hear your thoughts!
