Could you help Ryan’s dreams come true?Warrington Fostering Service are urging people to consider fostering a teenager, justlike Ryan, during Foster Care Fortnight (16-26 May), a national campaign that raisesawareness of fostering.

The service’s changing lives recruitment campaign focuses on how fosteringpositively changes lives both for children and foster carers. This year’s campaign will focuson recruiting carers for teenagers as this is where the real need for the service is.

Everyone knows that childhood and teenage years can be difficult. We can all rememberfeeling insecure and "misunderstood". But for a young person who has endured particularlydistressing experiences at home and is now in foster care, it can be an extremely unsettlingtime.

The Fostering Network, who organise the national Foster Care Fortnight campaign, estimate that 9,000 more foster carers are needed in 2013 alone to meet the diverse needsof children and young people coming into care across the UK. In Warrington alone, therewere 232 children in care in February 2013 and only 98 foster carers. There are a largenumber of older children who, for many different reasons, cannot return home to live withfamily, and need long term foster families to provide them a loving home until adulthood.

If you feel you could make Ryan’s dreams come true? Contact the fostering service nowfor a free information pack on 01925 444 100 or visit online atwww.warrinton.gov.uk/fostering

Teacher's Pet - How can pets benefityour school and your pupils?"Placing companion animals in schoolcurricula encourages the moral, spiritual and personal developmentof each child, bringing socialbenefits to the school communityand enhancing opportunities forlearning in various areas of theschool curriculum" Rio declarationof the International association ofHuman Animal Interaction, Rio deJaneiro, 12 September 2001.

There has long been an associationbetween man and animals and overthe past 30 years, scientists havebecome increasingly interested inthe notion that 'pets are good foryou'. Research has found that petsdo promote a general feeling ofwell-being, and it is well known that happy children tend to be healthier children.

All parents and teachers know the enthusiasm and engagement that animals can producein children. Many school communities are enriched by this knowledge, introducing petsinto schools in a number of imaginative and practical ways. Pet clubs, pet assemblies orpet days can help to nurture an understanding of life and the responsibilities of animalwelfare in the individual child and the school as a whole. Pets can also provide a fun routeinto many curriculum areas.

Animals fascinate children. Recent studies have shown that this interest can facilitatelearning, have a positive effect on child development and be harnessed to improve humanand animal welfare. Many diverse, sometimes surprising benefits have been recorded, both for mainstream children and for those with special needs. The therapeutic andeducational benefits have been identified as follows:

School pets have been found to:● motivate pupils to think and to learn, as children have a high level of

natural interest, enthusiasm and enjoyment of animals● encourage a respect and reverence for life in pupils and thereby

improve their relationships with other pupils, parents and teachers● foster a sense of responsibility in children● teach children to nurture and respect life● lead to the development of hobbies / careers in animal care● improve academic achievement

Pets are good for you!

Page 19: Kids Direct Warrington Spring 2013

19

Teachers have also found therapeutic benefits for children with specialneeds. For example:

● a calming effect on pupils, particularly those with behavioural or learningdifficulties; improving behaviour and concentration, reducing stress and improvingself-esteem

● encouraging expression and participation in more withdrawn children● animals can help when working with the most vulnerable children● educational improvements with low achievers

Pets in schools also have social benefits for the school community:● enhance the learning environment, creating a sense of security and family warmth

for the pupils● encourage the involvement of parents and the wider community in school activity● help to promote the school as an important nurturing influence in the community● reduce the incidence of truancy, vandalism and conflict through fostering a

greater sense of community

Looking after a school petAny involvement of animals in schools must promote good practice in animal care. It is veryimportant that children are taught correct procedures in handling and caring for animals, and a school pet provides an opportunity to do this.Children should be encouraged to take a shared responsibility for the care of the animals, under direct supervision. They should only be given tasks appropriate to their ability.Encouragement and praise are important. At all costs, children must be helped not to fail, orfeel inadequate in their pet care duties. Standards of care must be high - children learnthrough observation.

For further information on how to incorporate a pet in school, please seewww.nationalpetmonth.org.uk.

FREE VIDEO - MUSIC LESSON FORCHILDREN AGED 4 TO 6

Q:How can you entertain, educateand inspire a 5 year old all in one

go?

A: Inspirational, modern music lessons.

Across my 20 years experience, I haveenjoyed teaching the 4 to 6 year old agerange more than any other. I attribute thispersonal reward to seeing how well thechildren progress in such a small time scale.By making the learning process fun andintuitive, children as young as 4 canunderstand and perform material that I wasstill struggling with when I was MUCH olderthan they are.A child’s perception of music is in its mostrapid period of development between theages of 4 and 6. Countless studies acrossthe globe have proved that studying musicassists with a child’s confidence andconcentration. So too, their abilities inproblem solving, self-expression and co-ordination are greatly improved. Due to itslogical pattern-based nature, musiceducation has even been proved to help withMaths! I see this development on a dailybasis and I totally agree with those findings.Beat exists everywhere; from the beating ofa heart to a walk in the park. By teaching achild the notation of these everyday rhythms, they can verbalise them. Once they areverbalised, they become tangible. If they aretangible, they can be performed with a solidunderstanding. This enables music to becommunicated with true comprehension, which makes it far more fun. After all, musicis a language. Rhythm is the fundamentalbuilding block of music. Our system teachesyoungsters these vital musical componentsso they can go on to learn ANY instrumentmore easily.

You can also see for yourself the amazingprogress our students make and the great funthey have in the process. At Presto Music School we teach children in afun and lively environment. Music should befun! Our students as young as 4 years old arereading, understanding and performing realmusic notation in their first lesson. Our new keyboard music book “PrestoLand”is specifically geared to children aged 4 to 6.It is the product of many years of experiencein teaching WITH children, not teaching ATthem. The book and accompanying lessonsencapsulates easy to follow pieces, funtunes, along with all the benefits of learningan instrument. You and your little ones can try all this foryourself by joining us for a FREE introductorylesson. Simply call 01925 577715 to bookand we will have your children playingkeyboard in that very first lesson.Should you wish to continue, prices start fromjust £45 per month for a weekly half hourkeyboard lesson for 4-6 year olds. Thesesessions are with one of our inspirational andfully trained teachers. We look forward to meeting you.

“From their very first lesson at Presto Music, students as youngas 4 are reading, understanding and performing real music

notation on keyboards and piano.”

Barbara McCoy, from Face 2Face Tuition shares with usher knowledge andexperience of Irlen®Syndrome (ScotopicSensitivity Syndrome).

“I fell across The Irlen®Method in 2005 whenresearching early readingfailure and I wanted to helppupils who lacked motivation, never read for pleasure orhad poor concentration. Notmany educationalistsseemed aware of Irlen®Syndrome and so mypassion with Irlen® andDyslexia was born.

During the second year of myMasters course, I wasshockingly diagnosed, at theage of 40, with Irlens®. Mytutor was amazed to see thatI have got this faracademically without beingdiagnosed. With hindsight, Ican see similarities withmyself and my boys, as wehave to reread many timesfor information to ‘sink’ in.We have to print it off andread again and we sufferfrom fatigue when reading. Itcan be inherited and so myAutistic son and my eldestson who has SpLD, will nowbe tested too.

Helen Irlen’s research hasgained more respect overthe last two decades and itis now estimated thatapproximately 15% of thepopulation suffer from thesyndrome; some may alsohave Dyslexia, but not all do.It is estimated that just 10%have Dyslexia. She alsonoticed that some clientswith Specific LearningDifficulties (SpLD) may havebeen mislabelled.

Diagnosticians andscreeners are now in 24countries fitting over100,000 children with Irlen®spectral filters and millionsuse appropriate screened-for coloured Irlen® overlays.

People who have Irlen®Syndrome have a visual-

perception issue; thedifficulty being caused bythe way the brain interpretsthe information that is beingsent through the eyes.

Sufferers can perceivethings in an unstable, distorted fashion; where theprint becomes less clear asthey continue reading.Signs, labels, maps andcharts can be difficult tosee as can looking atcomputers and thetelevision. It concentrateson sensory overloads, depth perception, lightsensitivity (to fluorescent, bright lights with/withoutcolour and patterndistortions), sensoryintegration and discomfortwhen reading.

“It is now estimated that approximately15% of the population suffer from the

syndrome”

Sufferers may also complain of:* The glare on white backgrounds or of bright lights* Dizziness, fatigue, headaches, migraines, blinks or squints a lot, sore eyes or stomach aches.* Difficulties with handwriting, reading (may be choppy and hesitant), spelling, maths, reading musical notes, comprehending, writing, copying and note-taking.* Difficulties using whiteboards, overheads and computers.* Under-performing in sports.* Eye tracking issues and stress induced by the volume of print on the page.* Are accident-prone and/or drops or knocks things over.* Have behavioural problems, easily distracted, fidgety and can’t stay focused.* Their academic performance is poorer in test conditions.

Anyone presenting with several of thesecharacteristics should be screened forIrlen® Syndrome after a general eye sighttest. The Screening test is non-invasive andvery cost effective.

Irlen® Syndrome exists on a continuum ofslight to severe and treatment maybe part ofthe missing link in bringing relief from anumber of the aforementioned symptoms.

An example of how people withIrlen® Syndrome may see text

I am able to screen at the colouredoverlay stage, but will refer you on afterthis if need be, as Irlen® filters can onlybe provided by accredited Irlen®diagnosticians. Sometimes the Irlen®coloured overlays/filters are enough toreduce the symptoms alone.

I have been referring children for a whileand it is always rewarding to see thesesame children suddenly making progressat school, being less anxious, focusing forlonger, having their self-esteem raisedand seeing the smile on their face whentheir test scores go up!”

Next issue, Barbara will discuss how the lensesassist with improving the symptoms ofIrlen® Syndrome.See page 37 for a super discount offer!Useful information:Barbara [email protected] 4044390

Kids Direct Spring 2013Moving to the new/next room

Do you remember how you felt the last time you started a new job, moved to a new house or even wenton holiday to a new place? These feelings of uncertainty, excitement and trepidation are the same forchildren coping with key transition points throughout their lives.

The process of how and when a child moves from one room to the next is decided on an individual basisand only takes place when the key person, the parent and most importantly the child, feels they are isready to do so.

Once the important discussion has been held between the key person and the parent and they are inagreement about the date for the child to move up to the next room the process begins.

Once your settling in sessions have been arranged a meeting will take place with your child’s currentkey person, the new key person and yourself. This meeting gives you the opportunity to be introducedto your child’s new special person and time to ask any questions you may have regarding the move. Italso gives you time to familiarize yourself with the layout of the room and the other staff as well as whereto put your child’s belongings. We understand it is the small things that make the biggest difference.

The first visit to the new room will be with the key person accompanying your child and introducing themto the new staff, new children and difference in the environment. The key person will stay with your childthroughout this visit.

For the second stage the key person will stay with your child for a shorter period of time (length dependingon child). The third and fourth visits to the new room are longer, and the key person will take the child tothe new room and leave when your child is settled so they become used to the room and bond with theirnew key person.

During these settling in sessions you will be given a more detailed handover at the end of the dayinforming you of exactly how your child has got on in their new surroundings.

After your child has moved to the new room, we will ask for your feedback regarding the wholeexperience to ensure continued improvements are made to this important part of your child’stransition.
