Just as the winter doldrums set in, wise strategists present a host of popular awards. This week started with the Grammy Awards and today, January 28, the prestigious Newbery and Caldecott Awards winners were announced. Kate DiCamillo wins the Newbery for Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated

Adventure, an unusual story about a “cynical” girl who rescues a squirrel from the jaws of a vacuum cleaner. These two most unlikely companions form a mutually transformative bond. DiCamillo’s fanciful story is filled with humor,

pathos, and the complexity of human emotion. K.G. Campbell’s black and white comic book style illustrations bring a valuable added dimension to DiCamillo’s words. Fans of The Tale of Despereaux, DiCamillo’s first Newbery winner, will especially want to read Flora & Ulysses.

Locomotive, by Brian Flaco, takes the 2014 Caldecott Award. Read Locomotive and time travel. Ride on the brand new Transcontinen-tal Railroad from Omaha to Sacramento in 1869. Flaco’s rich text, written like poetry, merge with his lush watercolor illustrations breathing life into this historic journey. Readers are swept up in the sights, sounds, tastes, and dynamic energy of this exciting historic trip. Before winning the Caldecott, Locomotive received rave reviews. Treat yourself by checking out this worthy winner.

Once again, I remind every-one to please keep sending all Box Top coupons in with your student/s.

News from Guidance

The 3 guidance counselors are conducting classes with students during FAST periods through-out this year. We will be teaching students to think about and identify their dominant thinking

and learning styles, and how this awareness can help them study more efficiently and develop their abilities as good students.

The Guidance department would also like to remind you that your children will be asked to work on parts of their ILPs (Individual Learning Plans) on the computer at home. (Students without

internet use at home will be able to do this at school.) It would be very beneficial if parents helped with this project. The information needed to do this will be forthcoming.

Chinese Class

A free Chinese class will be offered on Wednesdays from 2:15-3:15 in February and March. It is sponsored by a grant from the URI Confucius Institute. It is open

to any student, beginner or experienced. Please contact Julia Texeira at [email protected]
