How To…

TENSION

Obtaining the correct tension is perhaps the single f actor whichcan make the differ ence between a successful gar ment and adisastrous one. It controls both the shape and size of an article, soany variation, however slight, can distort the finished garment. Werecommend that you knit a square in stocking stitch of perhaps 5- 10 more stitches and 5 - 10 more rows than those given in thetension note. Mark out the central 10cm square with pins. If youhave too many stitches to 10cm try again using thicker needles, ifyou have too few stitches to 10cm tr y again using finer needles.Once you have achieved the cor rect tension your garment willbe knitted to the measurements indicated in the pattern.

CAST ON

This is the term for the very first stitches youmake on y our needles. There ar e se veralmethods. The first thing to do is cr eate a slipknot on your needle.

SIMPLE CAST ON

Place the slip knot onto the needle and hold thisneedle in your left hand. Hold the yarn and theother needle in your right hand. Insert the rightneedle through the loop and pass the yarn around the point.

With the point of the r ight hand needle, pullthe yarn through the loop on the left needle tocreate a new loop which is now on your rightneedle.

Transfer this loop onto the left needle andwithdraw the r ight needle. You now have twostitches on left needle. Continue (repeating steps1-3) until y ou have the r equired number ofstitches.

KNIT STITCH

This is the fir st stitch you learn and is abbr eviated in knittingpatterns as K. It creates a simple r idged fabric known as gar terstitch when used on its own. When worked in alternate rows withpurl stitch, it forms a smooth textured fabric known as stockingstitch.

Insert the point of the r ight hand needlethrough the first loop on the left hand needle, from front to back.

Pass the y arn, held at the back of the w ork, around the r ight needle point in an anti-clockwise direction, pull the needlepoint andyarn through the loop on the left hand needle.

Slip the loop off the left needle to completethe first stitch. Continue in this w ay until allthe stitches on the left hand needle have beenknitted onto the r ight needle. You have nowcompleted 1 row.

PURL STITCH

This is the second stitch to lear n and is abbr eviated in knittingpatterns as p.

Bring your yarn to the fr ont of the w ork ,insert the right needle through the front of thefirst stitch on the left needle from right to left.

Pass the y arn, held at the fr ont of the w orkaround the point of the right needle in an anti-clockwise direction.

Push the needle and yarn through the loop tothe back and slip the loop off the left handneedle, lea ving a ne w stitch on the r ightneedle. This is the fir st purl stitch. Completeall the stitches on the needle in this w ay tomake the first purl row.

YARN FORWARD

Bring yarn forward between needles and overright needle to form a stitch.

KNIT ONE THROUGH BACK OF LOOPS

Bring yarn forward between needles and overright needle to form a stitch.

SHAPING - DECREASE

Decreases are made by working two or more stitches together andis used to shape garments.

Simple knit decrease (K2tog)This forms a decrease that slopes to the r ight.Knit two stitches to gether b y inser ting thepoint of the r ight hand needle thr ough twostitches instead of one and knitting thesetogether as for one stitch.

Simple Knit decrease (K3tog)This is achieved by simply passing the right hand needle through3 stitches instead of 2 as sho wn and knitting together as for onestitch.

Simple Knit decrease (k2togtbl)This forms a decrease that slopes to the left.Knit two stitches together but insert the pointof the r ight needle through the back of thestitches and knit both to gether as for onestitch.

Simple Purl decrease (P2tog)Insert the needle purlways through two stitchesand purl them together as one stitch.

SIMPLE INCREASE

Knit into the fr ont of the Stitch in the usualway. But before slipping the old stitch off theneedle, knit into the back of the stitch, formingtwo stitches on the right hand needle.

MAKING A STITCH

This method is different from a simple increasein that it does not use an existing stitch tomake another stitch. Pick up the hor izontalloop between two stitches and work into theback of it to make a stitch as shown to make 2 stitches work intofront of the loop after first working into back of it.

MULTIPLE INCREASE

This is worked in a similar w ay to a simpleincrease but instead of working just 2 stitchesinto the first you will work several. In order toincrease several times into one stitch y ou will need to alter natebetween knit and purl stitches.

SLIP STITCH

Slip one stitch knitwise from your left hand needle on to the righthand needle then knit the next stitch

Insert your left hand needle into the fr ont ofthe slip stitch and pull it over the knitted one.

Pass slip stitch overPass stitch on the right hand needle over thefirst stitch and off the needle.

CAST OFF

Once you have made your knitted fabric, you will need to finishoff the work. This is known as casting off.

Knit cast off

Be careful when casting off not to do so too tightly. You can use asize larger needle to avoid this, if you wish.

Knit the fir st two stitches. Then pick up thefirst stitch knitted with the point of the leftneedle and slip it over the second stitch and offthe r ight hand needle , to leave one stitch onthe right needle.

Now knit the next stitch to g ive two stitchesagain on the r ight needle . Cast off anotherstitch by repeating step 1.

Continue to cast off stitch by stitch across therow until only one stitch r emains. Break theyarn, slip the last stitch off the needle and drawthe end through. Pull the yarn tight to f astenoff. The tail end will be darned in later duringmaking up.

FINISHING TOUCHES

There are a number of useful tips and techniques that will helpensure a professional finish on your garment.

BLOCKING

When stitching the pieces to gether, remember to match ar eas ofcolour and texture very carefully where they meet. Use a seam stitchsuch as back stitch or mattress stitch for all main knitting seams andjoin all r ibs and neckband with mattr ess stitch, unless otherwisestated. When you have finished the various parts of the gar ment, they should be pr essed. Check the ball band for an y pressinginstructions. Pin out each piece of knitted f abric, wrong sideuppermost, on an ir oning sheet and check the measur ementsagainst the patter n instructions. Then block out each piece b ypinning around the edges, to the size r equired. Lightly press inplace, with a clean, damp cloth between the iron and the knitting.Avoid pressing the ribbing as this lessens its elasticity.

STITCHING

When stitching the pieces to gether, remember to match ar eas ofcolour and texture very carefully where they meet. Use a seam stitchsuch as back stitch or mattress stitch for all main knitting seams andjoin all r ibs and neckband with mattr ess stitch, unless otherwisestated. When stitching the pieces together, remember to match areasof colour and textur e very carefully where they meet. Use a seamstitch such as back stitch or mattress stitch for all main knitting seamsand join all ribs and neckband with mattress stitch, unless otherwisestated.

SEAMS

The majority of garments are made up with abackstitch seam, which g ives a tailored finish. For baby garments and delicate f abrics, use aflat seam. For ribbing, use invisible seams.

BACKSTITCH SEAM

Place the tw o pieces of f abric r ight sidestogether, and pin in position. Sew togetherwith a row of backstitches, worked one stitchin from the edge as shown.

FLAT SEAM

Place the tw o pieces of f abric r ight sidestogether, and pin in position. Sew togetherwith loose oversewing stitches, matching ridgeto ridge.

INVISIBLE SEAM/MATRESS STITCH

With the r ight sides of the knitting f acing you, place the tw opieces of f abric side by side. Stitch together as shown, workingone stitch from each edge in turn, as shown.
