The theme for National Library Week, “Welcome to Your Library,” promotes
the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of a building – and that
everyone is welcome to use their services. During the pandemic libraries have
been going above and beyond to adapt to our changing world by expanding their resources and continuing to meet the needs of their users. Whether people visit
in person or virtually, libraries offer opportunities for everyone to explore new
worlds and become their best selves through access to technology, multimedia
content, and educational programs. Here at the Kilbourn Public Library our
doors are open to the public but we will continue to offer ways for you to
“library” through our digital resources.

April Book Discussion In April we will be discussing the book Talking to Strangers by Malcolm
Gladwell. This book tackles the question “Why do our interactions with strangers
so often go wrong?” This book is a challenging and controversial excursion
through history. Gladwell revisits deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of
Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath, the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal at
Penn State University and the death of Sara Bland, throwing our understanding of
these stories into doubt. Because we don’t know how to talk to strangers, we are
inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our
lives and our world. We will be discussing this book twice in the month of April: Monday, April
26 at 5:30 pm and Wednesday, April 28 at 1:30 pm. This discussion will take place virtually
through zoom. To register for a discussion, click on the link above for the day you prefer.
Spirits of Earth with Robert Birmingham
Ancient Native American Effigy Mounds in Wisconsin
On Thursday, April 22 at 6:30 pm Robert Birmingham, a retired
UW–Waukesha professor and the author of several books on archaeological and historical topics
will be with us virtually to host the Spirits of Earth presentation. The presentation will explore what
is known about the effigy mounds and the world of the effigy mound builders with examples drawn from the Columbia County Region. After 500 B.C. native peoples began the custom of burying the
dead under earthen mounds. Mound building exploded throughout southern Wisconsin and became
much more elaborate taking form of sometimes vast landscapes of burial mounds made as effigies of
animals, supernatural beings, and even human beings. Modern day Columbia and Dodge counties are
at the geographical heart of this remarkable cultural development that is unique in the world and
called the Effigy Mount Cultural Complex. To register for the program please click on this link, or
visit our website at www.dellslibrary.org.
