Climbing Kilimanjaro is a trip you should do once in the lifetime. Flying to Kilimanjaro-airport gives you a perfect impression of the uniqueness of this area. Beside being thehighest mountain in Africa Uhuru peak (the name of the highest point) is the highestfreestanding mountain in the world. It rises 5.000m above the African Savannah to analtitude of 5.895m. The snow- and ice-covered top was a miracle for scientists in formercenturies – nowadays it has started to melt down and will soon be history if our climatecontinues to change.

Reasons to climb Kilimanjaro:

• Technically there are no difficulties to mention, just bringan average fitness-level and some experience in hill-walkingon paths with rocky or slippery passages.

• The weather is very stable in the dry season, however wecan experience some rain or snowfall in the afternoon as themicro-climate on the mountain produces clouds during theday. In the evening it mostly clears up and the night-sky withbillion stars is definitely worth to see.

• On our way towards the summit we stroll through themountain's four main eco-zones pausing occasionally toadmire the views or examine the unique mountain flora. Wemarch through the rain-forest with high trees, wild apes and

Kilimanjaro from the north

march through the rain-forest with high trees, wild apes andorchids into a magical stretch of giant heathers and on to themoor land zone where giant groundsels – surely thestrangest plants on Kilimanjaro – grow in abundance.

• If we follow the rules for climbing high altitudes (and be surewe shall tell you precisely what to do and what to avoid), thesummit is more than 90% sure for you.

• Flying from Europe there is another pro you do not haveto battle jetlag.

• When I climbed Kilimanjaro first in 2006 I missed to see theBig Five in wildlife. On our additional safari we are going tosee at least some of the beautiful creatures like elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, antelopes or buffalos. Right now Iam bargaining about a two-days safari that would include theextraordinary eco-system of Ngorogoro-crater on our trip.

• The service provided by the local people is 5 stars-qualityin terms of how they understand service and they thrive forexcellence with their little resources.

More reasons to climb Kilimanjaro:

• On the mountain it is a law to use local portersand guides to support the local community .You make it happen, that they have a job for aweek and enough money for two months. Withthe money you pay we are supportingapproximately three local Tanszanians forabout two months - in a country where theunemployment-rate is around 65%.

• As in the years before we shall support thelocal community by bringing a huge amount ofused equipment and clothes to Tanzania.

• As an experienced photographer I am lookingforward to document our journey with perfectphotographs that I shall share you you as amemory for your personal use.

• The team that will climb on the mountaintogether, will be an interesting mixture ofpeople of different age, professionalbackground and nationality – make new friends

background and nationality – make new friends& enlarge your network!

• You can walk your own pace (and a very slowpace is necessary for an efficientacclimatisation) and are not dependent on anygroup-speed as we have one guide per twodelegates supporting you.

• There are two routes for us to choose fromUmbwe or Rongai. I have done the Umbwe-trailtwo times and I love the solitude on the first twodays. On the following days there are morepeople on our way as the route aligns with twoother major routes. The Rongai-route is nice totake as well and approaches the mountain fromthe other side.

The Umbwe-trailAfter the 8-hours flight from Amsterdam Shipol to Kilimanjaro Airport inTanzania on the 1st day , we shall stay in a nice lodge in Arusha for thenight. The 2nd day will be used to drive to the Gate of the Nationalpark and toreach the first camp on 2.850m.There are seven routes that may be used to climb towards the top. We aregoing to choose the “Umbwe-Trail” – the quietest but most beautiful trailon the mountain: dramatic views and some terrific, invigorating walking –and all without the clutter and chatter of other trekkers. Those who knowthe mountain consider it Kili´s best-kept secret. And it´s hard to argue withthat. I have never seen heather forest so thick, so uniform, so laden withbearded lichen nor so gorgeous. On the 3rd day we shall reach the Barrancocamp on 3.800m – one of themost beautiful spots on the mountain after having climbed through thedeep-carved jungle-valleys below. The 4th day will be used for acclimatising up to 4.600m by climbingtowards the Lavatower. If you are interested to go rock-climbing, there is atowards the Lavatower. If you are interested to go rock-climbing, there is anice short climb to the very summit. The Barranco-wall will be the technically most interesting part on our 5th

day reaching Karanga valley around noon and the Barafu-campsite afteranother 2hours at an altitude of approximately 4.600m.

We shall leave the camp in the early morning of our 6th day to climbtowards Stella-Point within approximately five hours. Sunrise will surpriseus with beautiful colours and Mavenzi will add an outstanding scenery forthis miracle. The summit of Uhuru Peak – the rooftop of Africa - isanother one-hours hike from Stella-point at sunrise. The descent is quick and we are going to be back for an early dinneraround 17:00 p.m. in Barafu-Camp to reenergize. On our 7th day we shall descend until the Mweka-campsite at 3.100m.The 8th day the trail leads us through the rain-forest to the Mweka-Gate -the exit of the National-Park, where you get a certificate for your climb. After having some lunch in a local restaurant we return to Arusha to ourLodge. The afternoon is free for sight-seeing or shopping. In the eveningwe plan to make a little celebration-dinner.We shall leave very early in the morning of the 9th day to make a safari inTarangire (known for its large population of elephants) and spend the dayout in the Savanna-Woodlands. It is for you to decide if you want to flyhome on this evening and arrive in Amsterdam on the 10th day in the

Mag. Dr. Stefan Gatt

Born on the 8th of July 1970 I started extreme climbing at the age of thirteen. Six years later I led my first expeditionin the age of nineteen to Bolivia with 19 participants. Since 1993 I hold the certificate as a UIAGM - Mountain-guide.Meanwhile I led more than 20 expeditions to the highest peaks in South-America and Tibet with extraordinarysuccess. The last was on Mt. Everest where six climbers out of ten reached the summit. Two climbers succeededwithout oxygen. My biggest personal success in the mountains: 1st snowboard-descent from Mount Everest on the 22nd of may 2001(without oxygen), 2nd snowboard-descent from Cho Oyu 8.201m in 1999, 1st rescue of an injured person in a lyingposition from 7.500m on Cho Oyu and 1st snowboard-descent from Chimborazo 6.345m (the highest mountain ofthe world measured from the middle of the earth) in 1990. Furthermore I made about several first ascents on thehighest and most difficult mountains of the world. All climbs were made in pure alpine style. This means climbing themountain in one push without the use of bottled oxygen, sherpas or fixed ropes.

In my “normal” life I am working as a coach and facilitator in the field of management-training since 1992. Afterfinishing my studies of sports-science in Vienna in 1996 I put my full power and commitment into this passion.Meanwhile our team of consultants and facilitators grew to a size around 8 people. We are developing individuals, teams and organisations.

In the last years more and more groups from different companies wanted to make outstanding experiences with their teams in an alpine surrounding. Therefore we made several programmes in the Alps and sometimes we had such interesting goals like Montblanc. This trend brought me the first time toTanzania in fall 2006 to climb Kilimanjaro with a group of 18 delegates from one company. Everyone pushed hard on the summit-day and finally 16 peoplemanaged to reach the top of Afrika. In January 2008 I came with 15 Austrians and all of them succeeded to reach the top. In February 2014 seven peopleclimbed to the very top out of our group nine climbers (long-term success-rate is around 90%) . . .

I am looking forward to welcome you in our Kili-team for 2016!
