The CountyLoNeLy PLANeT SAyS: For many, County Kilkenny is all that they hope for in Ireland. Its a place of rolling green hills where youll soon run out of adjectives for green. Tiny roads wander the valleys beside swirling rivers and moss-covered stone walls. Relics of centuries of Irish religious history dot the landscape as if part of one great beautiful design. Wanderers and ramblers are rewarded by characterful pubs and exquisite restaurants scattered across the countryside, seemingly placed to reward those willing to take the road less travelled. Shamrock-cute Inistioge may be star of many a movie, but its the real deal, and youll soon find your own rhythm among the tidy shop fronts, mannered square and surging River Nore. Perhaps Kilkennys beauty and its inherent reward of discovery is why so many artists and craftspeople make their home in the county. In towns like Bennettsbridge and Thomastown, youll find wonderfully skilled people busy creating in their studios. Or maybe theyre just inspired by Kilkennys pride itself, its namesake city. An enduring gift of the Normans, Kilkenny city lures visitors by the score who find it hard to escape its pleasures. Medieval alleys wind among its castle, cathedral and ruined abbeys. But its no static postcard an alluring mix of superb restaurants, beguiling pubs and artisan vendors keeps things dynamic. From bucolic delights to citified fun, Kilkenny is a dream. Dunmore CaveConsisting of a series of chambers formed over millions of years, the cave contains some of the finest calcite formations found in any Irish cave. The cave has been known to man for many centuries and is first mentioned in the 9th century Irish Triads. The most interesting reference however, comes from the Annals which tells of a Viking massacre at the cave in the year 928 A.D. Archaeological finds within the cave confirm Viking activity. Exhibitions and displays can be viewed in the Visitor Centre. Please note that the cave is inaccessible for wheelchair users.

Kilkenny

The CityLonely Planet says: Kilkenny figures high on many an itinerary to Ireland and for good reason: its a fairly compact showplace with easily enjoyed heritage, a castle, interesting shops, a wide range of restaurants, lots of pubs and many inviting places to stay. You can cover pretty much everything on foot in a couple of hours, but sampling the many delights will take much longer. Theres an elegance and vibrancy that give the town (oops, locals insist on city) a timeless appeal. Much of Kilkennys architectural charm owes a huge debt to the Middle Ages, when the city was a seat of political power. But time has not passed the city by. Kilkenny remains a cultural centre, renowned for its devotion to the arts. Its cobbled pedestrian passageways and old-fashioned shop fronts may look like the way to a mysterious time-warp realm, but in reality they lead to cool bars, stylish boutiques and interesting restaurants. Kilkenny has plenty of modern allure, but it didnt sell out its traditional charms to get here. Kilkennys 60-odd licensed pubs and bars are a cheery mix of its gregarious citizens and the hordes of out-oftown merrymakers there for a fun-filled weekend. Along High St, every odd address appears to be a pub, and visitors staying near the centre can carouse from watering hole to watering hole. Presiding over the town is a splendid medieval cathedral, named after St Canice (Cainneach or Kenneth), who founded a monastery here in the 6th century; hence the citys Irish name, Cill Chainnigh. The towns other mustsee attraction is its mighty castle (although its more mansion than fortress), which sits majestically on a sweep in the River Nore. Lonely Planet, November 2009

a sign of gooD TasTeFrom rustic home-made food to award winning contemporary cuisine, from chic tapas bars to traditional and welcoming pubs Kilkennys cosmopolitan style and great food are to be savoured and enjoyed.Wherever you choose to eat, be sure to try the many delicious, locally made, artisan meats, cheeses and preserves. Explore the city and county and find restaurants and cafs in spectacular settings where dining becomes a true feast for the senses. TASTE of Kilkenny is a new project established to promote an awareness of local food producers and the food outlets, cafs and restaurants that support such businesses. It encourages a broader consciousness of the processes involved before our food reaches our plate. By creating a food trail, TASTE of Kilkenny hopes to draw attention to the rich variety of delicacies available within the county and break the perception that good food has to be expensive food. Whether it be artisan cheese-makers, farmers, smallholders or fine restaurants, all of the members within TASTE are committed to delivering a high quality product, using mainly traditional methods and remaining as organic as possible whilst highlighting the potential of the county as a leader in high quality produce. TASTE of Kilkenny invites you to use this trail to discover the countryside farms and city restaurants where you can sample their produce, whether you are local to the area or are visiting on holiday.
