Respect Connect Aspire Term 4 Week 4 2018
Principal’s Report
Energy Use
How would you like a power bill of $9000 a month? The school’s power bill for August was $8966!
That would be enough to give anyone a heart attack. With energy prices rising all the time, I thought
I should address this, otherwise funding that should be covering educational costs will be spent on
electricity.
Schools the size of ours have considerable power needs, heating and cooling, photocopying, lighting,
hot water, ovens, machines and kilns. From the graphs, it is easy to see when school starts, when
there is lunch and recess and of course holidays. The design of the school is not conducive to letting
light and sun in during winter months and the prefab concrete walls mean classrooms are cold. The
opposite happens in summer, again the original design did not consider thermal efficiency.
Last year I successfully applied for a solar grant, the school put in 50% and the government matched
the funding. These were installed on the roof of several blocks over the July holidays and last August
our 100KW Solar panel array was hooked up, and is now working away with no effort from us.
Already we have found that our power use has dropped by 50%, which is great news when our bill is
so big.

I have applied for permission to install air-conditioners in the upstairs north facing classrooms. In
summer these rooms really are unbearable, and although they have fans these do little to dissipate
the heat. I’m waiting on approval from assets as checks have to be made to see if our electrical system
can handle the load. It will be done as soon as we have the go ahead.
As each block is painted, we have tried to seal the classrooms as the original prefab concrete slabs
were installed with foam rubber between the slabs. After 50 years, these have deteriorated leaving
gaps where cold air comes in during winter. With improved maintenance over the past 3 years the
buildings are now able to retain the heat or cool as needed.
Our computers are on a timed system so that all machines are shut down when not in use. This acts
as a useful reminder for our staff to go home at 6pm as well. Again savings have been made since we
have implemented this at school.
I have also contacted the sustainability unit within the department to see what else we can do to try
to reduce our power use. I have heard that trials of LCD lighting and timed switches are being tested
in some schools – so at least they are thinking of making some changes. I will continue to lobby for
them at Killarney Heights High School.
Many further changes will involve educating students and staff – little things like turning lights and
fans off as they leave the room will offer savings for the school and environmental benefits.

Thanks to all of those that offered support to the Dancing in the Moonlight Social event planned for 3 November. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough ticket sales to proceed with the event. We had a great response to the call out for donations from families at the school and broader community so we will be proceeding with creation of a raffle which will have a number of hampers as prizes. The hampers are currently being packaged up and we’ll start to advertise and sell tickets shortly. Your support in purchasing tickets will be much appreciated – all funds raised will go directly to resources for the Intensive Learning space. KHHS P&C

Richard Gill AO
4 November 1941 - 28 October 2018
The education world is mourning the passing of Richard Gill who inspired thousands of students
through his conducting, directing and advocacy for music and education programs across Australia
and internationally.
In 2014, he visited Killarney Heights High School and generously provided a workshop for our elective
music students and this will be a treasured memory for all who participated.
Anyone who met him was encouraged to take on new challenges – he was a force of nature. Above
all, he shared an infectious love of music, and a passionate belief in Music and musicians.
