Subject: Math
Grade: 3rd grade
Math block of 90 minutes from 1:00-2:30
Common Core Standard: 3.NF.1. Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b. (Common Core, 2012)
Big or Main idea of lesson
Students will identify parts of a whole. Students will understand numerator and denominator. Student will work in groups to create fraction images with mini stories. Students will complete worksheet with hands on fraction manipulation.
Lesson Objective
Students will identify fractions 1/b as a whole partitioned into equal parts and learn denominator and numerator via direct PowerPoint instruction and note taking in a fraction notebook. Students will practice in groups creating fraction mini stories. Students will be assessed on identifying dominator, numerator and showing mastery identification of fraction understanding with hands on Hershey Chocolate worksheet. Assessment will be yes or no of understanding seen visually and documented on a check sheet by teacher and parent volunteers.
Assessment (Backward Design)
Final assessment: Students will use Hershey Chocolate bars to complete worksheet. Teacher and parent volunteers will verify student understanding one on one. Students who need additional help will be worked with one on one or offered one of the differential lessons.
Pre-assessment: Students will complete fraction sort worksheet for base understanding assessment. (Appendix A)
Instructional Process:
1. Introduce students to new concept of fractions; ask what they know about fractions.
2. Instruct students to get ready for pre-assessment.
3. Pass out pre-assessment (Appendix A), advise students they have ten minutes to work on the worksheet. When done, turn the page into the math basket and sit quietly till the timer goes off. (10 min)
4. When timer goes off, ask students how they think they did on the worksheet while passing out new fraction math journal (Appendix B, front page only) and the hands on fraction bars (Appendix K)
5. Advise students to put their name on the math journal and open to the first page.
6. Begin PowerPoint. (Appendix C, first slide only) (20 min)
a. Open discussion, reviewing what has been talked about with fractions.
b. Instruct for note taking of new vocabulary words of numerator and denominator.
c. Review images of real world fractions.
d. Introduce the idea of mini fraction stories.
e. Show mini fractions video from youtube.com.
f. Talk with students about mini fraction stories and have them journal a few examples.
7. Review material for clarification and catch up students who need additional guidance.
8. Explain group mini fraction story activity. (Appendix D)
9. Post group wheel (Appendix E), give students two minutes to get into groups and begin working. 15 minutes will be allowed for group work. (15 min)
10. When the timer for group work goes off, speaker from each group will present two of the four mini stories their team created. (10 min)
11. Team messenger will turn papers into the math basket and all students will return to their seats.
12. Clearly explain Hershey Chocolate fraction worksheet and pass out materials. Students who finish early are instructed to raise their hand for review. Once OK’d by teacher or volunteer students will be allowed to eat 1/3 of the candy and the remaining is to go into the baggies provided and put in their backpacks. Students who are done early will then have time to work on
cutting their math journal flip fractions. Students will have 20 minutes to finish. (Appendix F) (5 min)
Give students Hershey Chocolate bars, worksheets, and baggies. Start assessment. (20 min)
