Video Reflection
This short paper is a summary reviewing Lesson on Birds and A Lesson on
Fractions. This summary will cover the importance of reflection, how to use reflection to
improve decision making, and suggested changes in the two viewed lessons.
Importance of reflection in teaching
Reflecting on each lesson is important because it allows teachers to become a
more mindful of how a lesson is working. As a teacher continually improving betters a
lesson each time that lesson is taught. There are various ways of reflection. One way is
to review once a lesson is complete to reflect and take notes on what worked and what
did not. A second way is a quick mental note during a lesson to improve the time it is
taught. Another, more immediate reflection is observing during a lesson that something
needs to change immediately, and adjusting at that moment. Keeping a lesson plan,
notes, or a journal from year to year will help improve a lesson for the benefit of the
students.
How to use reflection to improve decision making
Reflection is a tool to improve how a lesson went and how to make it better.
Asking specific questions in the reflection can direct a teacher how to direct a lesson for
the next use. Questions such as what went well, what would be definitely used again,
what did not work, what tools might be used next time, was the amount of time allotted
enough or too much, did the student achieve the objective, and were enough diverse
learning tools used.

Revisions of Lesson on Birds and A Lesson on Fractions
Lesson on Birds
This lesson is focused on hands on, real-world understanding of different types of
birds and their habitats. The students are in engaged in various hands on differentiated
learning. Lesson on Birds focuses on building self-esteem, spatial, social, and logical
understanding of the lesson. To update the lesson, more current technology would be
an asset and planning an end of unit field trip to an aviary or bird sanctuary.
A Lesson on Fractions
This lesson is focused on repetitive understanding of manipulation of equivalent
fractions. This lesson focused on allowing students to work independently and in groups
to solve equivalent fractions. Modeling with direct instruction is very effective. To update
the lesson, more current technology would be an asset. Including smart boards, various
shape models, and computer games would enhance the learning. Additionally, finding a
song or method to include music in the lesson would be beneficial for musical learners.
Conclusion
There is no such thing as a perfect lesson. Every time a lesson is taught the
students’ needs are different. As a teacher, taking the time to reflect on what worked
and what did not work will enhance the lesson and benefit future learners.
