How Space Defines Us!
I am fascinated by church architecture. I enjoy the use of space at Kimball ---the spiral walkway from the entrance to the sanctuary with the social space below and the worship space above. The additional social space on the first floor provides even more openness. Space defines us. Not long ago, I drove by a building used by the Jehovah
Witnesses. It was a non-descript facility except there were no windows! The Witnesses call their worship space “Kingdom Hall” with the idea that the kingdom of God is in this space, thus there is no need to look upon the world. Don’t we use space to make a statement of faith? Some years ago, I worshiped in St. Peter’s Lutheran in Manhattan, New York City. The church rents the first floor of the Citicorp Building and is surrounded in clear glass! Behind the pulpit runs 47th street. While the congregation worships, everyone can see pedestrians walking behind the preacher! Sometimes the pedestrians will stop on the street and stare into the congregation and even wave as the sermon is delivered! It reminded me of the TODAY SHOW on television! I had the compulsion to wave back, but restrained myself. Here the church looked out over the world coming and going! I know that space affected those who worshiped there week to week, but how? What does the pedestrian think when he or she passes by the worship service? How does the space at Kimball speak to the mission and ministries of those who call Kimball their “church home?” How does it shape and form those inside and those who see it from the outside? Is a statement being made to those inside and for the pedestrians who pass on the outside? Pastor Guy

Thank you to all the folks who donated blood at the CBCC Blood Drive on July 13th. We had 20 donors present
and 16 productive units. We exceeded our goal! Each pint saves 3 lives!
Our next blood drive is Wednesday, Sept. 7th in the Fellowship Hall from 4:00-7:00. Anyone who donated at the last blood drive is eligible to donate because you can donate whole blood every 56 days :)
The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is an independent, locally managed, non-profit community blood center. They are the primary blood supplier to the region’s patients and hospitals.
~ 1 in 7 people entering the hospital need blood.
~ Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
~ Less than 10 percent of the population that is eligible do donate does so.
Please consider donating. The pain is temporary, but the gift can last a lifetime… A sign-up sheet will be posted outside of the youth room or contact
Doris Teumer at [email protected] or sign up on line at www.cbcc.us
**We had a number of folks who could not donate due to low hemoglobin levels. Be sure to eat iron rich foods two weeks prior to donating blood. Drink plenty of water too!

New Cleaning Contract Effective August 1st, Jani King will begin to
provide custodial service to Kimball. As part of the switchover, and as a means to continue to
reduce Kimball’s expenses, a change in custodial responsibilities was also approved by
the Church Council. Effective with the switchover, on August 1st, each Sunday School
Class will be asked to clean their individual classrooms. In addition we are asking the
Chancel Choir to maintain their choir room. We would also ask each that trash cans
be placed outside the classrooms after Sunday School, and they will be emptied and replaced. We appreciate everyone’s support and help as we transition this work.

ANNUAL PRAYER BREAKFAST
AUGUST 6, 2016 --- 9 A.M.
This year’s Annual Ladies’ Prayer Breakfast will be held in the Commons Area at Kimball Memorial on Saturday, August 6th at 9 a.m. We encourage you to put this on your busy summer schedule. This is always a wonderful time to enjoy each other’s company and to host other Christian women of the com-munity in fellowship and the Word. Please sign up by August 1 on sheets provided outside of the Narthex and Youth Room window area or phone the church office so we may prepare for your presence. Remember to extend invitations to neighbors, friends and family. Child care will be provided if there is a need noted. A buffet breakfast will be served by Kimball Women of the ELCA (WELCA), with donations going to WELCA Scholarship Fund and the Women In Need Fund. Rebecca Hardin, retired Bible Teacher from Northwest Cabarrus High School will be this year’s speaker. Some of us will remember Mrs. Hardin spoke at our prayer breakfast 25 years ago. We can look forward to another wonderful message. Our theme this year is based on Isaiah 64:8 “And yet Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay and you are the potter. We are all formed by your hand.”

Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church Kimball Communicator-Newsletter 101 Vance St. Kannapolis, NC 28081 704-933-4101
“God's Style of Music" Does God have a particular style of music that He favors? Well, let's take at a look at a couple of scriptures from the New Testament. Ephesians 5:19 and Colossians 3:16 say essentially the same thing; sing to one another (presumably in worship) with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. There are various definitions of each one of those categories, but suffice it to say, it covers pretty much all styles of music. The only qualifying
factor being that we do it with gratitude. So it would seem that God doesn't have a "favorite" style of music, but He looks at the attitude with which we sing it. That isn't to say that we all don't a favorite "style" of music, and that style is most probably the one that engenders the most gratitude in our hearts and thus pleases God. I think all styles of music (well, almost all - I'm not sure about "head-banging" acid rock, but then again, maybe some people can worship God that way) can be used in a worship context if it's presented the right way and with gratitude. It's easy to think a certain style of music isn't "spiritual" simply because it's not our preference. There are other passages in the New Testament about music (the book of Revelation for one), but the writers of the New Testament gave few specifics about how to implement music ministry. It comes down to the attitude of the heart. -Don Simmons, Music Director of Chancel Choir and B ells
