Secured $1M gift to establish “The UMES Delmarva Power Green
Collar Initiative,” to support the University’s workforce development
efforts, particularly in the area of renewable energy and sustainability;
Implemented strategy that garnered national exposure for the
University’ PGA golf management program and generated gifts
totaling $320,000;
Negotiated a public-private partnership and gift of business assets
(Get’n Grounded Café) from BRK, Inc. to establish “M Street Grille,”
a venue that will offer hands-on experience in hospitality management
for students within the university’s Department of Hospitality and
Tourism;
Leveraged a $36,000 private gift in order to hire an endangered Syrian
pharmacy professor through the Institute of International Education
(IIE) Scholar Rescue Fund; and
Contributed donations in excess of $10,000 to support student
scholarships, athletics and program enhancements at the University
Community Engagement
Served as a liaison community boards, commissions and committees
that further the university’s core mission and strategic initiatives
(United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, Salisbury Area Chamber of
Commerce); and
Led efforts to establish “Hawk Corner,” an off-campus community
outreach center
Government Relations
Established credibility with elected officials by increasing engagement
and outreach to members of state and local elected bodies;
Spearheaded the successful advocacy campaign for a new Pharmacy
and Health Professions building for the University’s School of
Pharmacy and Health Professions;
Prepared State legislative testimony for university president;
Served as a member of the State Relations Council, which advocates
for the legislative priorities within the University System of Maryland
(USM) and is comprised of the governmental affairs representatives
from each of the USM campuses;

Addressed concerns of local, state and federal lawmakers pertaining to
decisions that impact constituents within their legislative districts
including, but not limited to issues related to tuition, outsourcing of

Coordinated legislative events at the State capitol that highlight the
university;
Testified before a subcommittee of the Maryland General Assembly
on issues related to competitiveness of Maryland’s HCBU’s; and
Oversaw implementation and planning of the University’s Leveraging
Sustainable Partnerships Conference, which engaged partners from the
federal government and private industry
Marketing
Secured federal trademark registration from the U.S. Patent and
Trademark Office for DIVERSITEESM, the University’s initiative to
increase diversity, inclusion and equity in the golf industry;
Established an in-house integrated marketing team, Talon Media
Group, to enhance brand awareness about the University and its
programs;
Led efforts to create the university’s first multimedia marketing plan;
Supported the overhaul of the university’s website, which included
revamped homepage, navigation and search functions with an
emphasis on attracting prospective students;
Oversaw team that produces university publications: The Key (bi-
weekly newsletter), Rhythm and Hues (arts and entertainment
calendar) and Annual Report; and
Created university marketing materials and campaigns in the absence
of an in-house graphic designer for the university
Strategic Partnerships
Conceptualized, developed and led the “UMES Delmarva Power
Green Collar Initiative,” a collaboration between the University and
Delmarva Power, an Exelon Company, to enhance efforts to grow a
“green” workforce in Maryland, Delaware and the District of
Columbia;

national program to increase opportunities for minorities in the golf
industry;

Worked with local county government officials to leverage county

audiences, including state of the University addresses and convocation

Academics and Enrollment
Conceptualized an enrollment communication campaign “I AM THE
ONE” and redeployed the marketing team to implement the plan in
order to increase engagement with prospective students in the face of
declining enrollments, which contributed to record enrollment in
AY2016;
Conceptualized and secured private funding for a mobile recruitment
vehicle to increase freshmen and transfer enrollment
Mobilized resources to support academic program enhancements for
the UMES PGA Golf Management Program; and
Worked with the University’s academic leadership and encouraged
educational and curricular innovation in developing niche, high-
impact, high-demand academic clusters as part of the Coalition v.
MHEC litigation regarding equity for Maryland’s HBCUs
Student Engagement
Attended student events, athletic events and performances;

Fundraising
Cultivated, solicited, secured and stewarded gifts from alumni and
non-alumni donors;
Provided leadership for the University’s fundraising goals, including
the generation of major gifts to support University initiatives, while
maintaining a portfolio of 75-100 donor prospects;
Personally generated nearly $900,000 in gifts and contributions the
first six months in the position, including a $500,000 commitment for
the university’s PGA® Golf Management Program;
Developed campus-wide employee fundraising campaign, “Where’s
Phil?,” to promote and build the culture of philanthropy on campus,
which increased philanthropic support among university employees by
nearly $60,000 over the prior fiscal year; and
Served as co-chair of the President’s Inauguration Week Activities
(2012-2013)

Corporate and Community Relations
Served as a liaison on university and community boards, commissions
and committees that further the university’s core mission and strategic

Created “Streetsweep,” a civic engagement project in which students,
faculty and staff partner with community residents to beautify the local

Legislative Affairs
Hired governmental affairs liaison to advocate for university’s
legislative priorities with local, state and federal legislators;
Provide integrated policy analysis and strategic consultation to the
President and senior administration on issues affecting the University;
and
With the President, successfully advocated for additional $900,000 in
funding for university’s 1890 funding match with state legislators
Marketing
Advocated for and established the in-house integrated marketing team,
Talon Media Group, to enhance brand awareness about the University

university crises, including a stabbing death of a student on campus

face-to-face visits to alumni;

10,000 + alumni, including alumni programming and multi-media
communication; and
Expanded and enhanced alumni contacts and promoted alumni
participation in university activities; and

Fundraising
Integral part of university’s successful capital campaign, which
exceeded $14M goal by $2.2M;
Funds raised under my leadership exceeded $1M and included:
o Largest alumni gift to date- $350,000

Increased alumni giving from baseline of $131,004 (FY05) prior to my
arrival, to $256,050 (FY06), $429,749 (FY07), $500,000 (FY08) and
$559,000 (FY09);
Advocated for fundraising team alignment with the university’s
academic schools in order to achieve more strategic fundraising
results;
Identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of gifts from
alumni and non-alumni donors;
Developed campaign goals and coordinated fundraising efforts for
School of Education, Social Sciences and The Arts and the
Department of Intercollegiate Athletics;
Earned initial certification and recertification as a Certified Fund
Raising Executive (CFRE) in 2008 and 2011; and
Served as part of the fundraising team that earned the CASE Circle of
Excellence Award for improvement in fundraising (2012)
Planned Giving
Developed and implemented the University’s first planned giving
program;
Provided leadership on the generation of five (5) and six (6) figure
gifts and pledges to support the University’s long-term goals;

Maryland’s Eastern Shore via a 24-hour hotline, domestic violence

Led agency in its successful initial accreditation by the American
